@xl507 - You don't need anything fancy. I believe mine is an old Bulldog collar. I've actually used hose clamps in the past as well. One of the reasons I went with the real collar was that it is easier for me to travel with a wrench (as shown). I need a screwdriver with a hose clamp, which isn't as convenient when traveling elsewhere.
Ross admirers (like myself): I think this is the closest we're likely to get to our guy endorsing an adjustable kettlebell! Ha! Actually this is another very good vid from RE and he does competently address the T-handle/KB comparison beginning @ 11:45 and makes some good points (especially re. fixed weight KB's). For a wimp like me I think an adjustable wt. KB is an acceptable option, but I guess not for a real man who swings 150 lbs.!
This is actually discussed within the video. You could use a sleeve, but I demonstrate how a small 2.5 lb weight (1 inch diameter) could be used at the bottom to keep the larger diameter plates in place.
@rossenamait great! that's just what i was looking for. finally put together one of these yesterday; using a hose clamp for now until it the collar comes in the mail. thanks ross!
@luklum - I actually enjoy deads so I wouldn't necessarily say I recommend something "instead". It really depends on the interests and needs of the individual. When i first filmed 495, that was almost 4 years ago. In the time since, I've come to enjoy the lift. Prior to that however, I still had nearly a lifetime of training with plenty of strength training (ex. heavy odd objects, heavy d-bell lifts, isometrics, etc.). I can't single out a single movement.
@1xACE - I wouldn't say that it is a sub, as the two movements are quite different. You can certainly do well without deadlifts however. I pulled almost 500 pounds without ever training the deadlift. As the years passed, I grew to enjoy the exercise. Despite enjoying it now, I still wouldn't say it is a necessity.
@hethuszar01 - I suppose you could, although I don't believe it would be necessary. For single arm work, you can do just fine with something such as a d-bell.
@tp0721 - I did not. They are on so tight though that it is very difficult to take it apart (bottom flange and the handle fittings). You certainly could however.
Awesome! Could you also make a single arm T handle? I think that would require a new handle as any addition to the original handle would make it too wide. Cheers, love your videos
Hey Ross great video, any advice how to make a homemade weight vest that is comfortable, durable and that a user has the ability to pack different weight on it?
hey ross, quick question: do you happen to know what collars were you using in the video? i've been looking for wrench tightened collars. thanks for the help. happy holidays!
If you were using only Olympic size weights that were 2", could you just up size the diameters an inch, i.e., 1 3/4" instead of 3/4, or would it be best to use the tip you mentioned?
Hey Ross, I've been doing swings with a T-handle that I built like yours. I've been doing high rep conditioning work with 100lbs and lately I absolutely cannot complete a workout because I keep getting terrible blisters and huge pieces of skin ripped off my palms and fingers and they takes weeks to heal. How do you do this without getting terrible blisters? I've tried various kinds of tape to wrap around the handles, nothing helps. I've tried truck bed liner on the handles, it came off the handles the first time I used it. I've tried polyester gardening gloves, still blisters. I've tried workout gloves with the finger part cut off, still blisters and missing skin. I've tried just about everything except these $40-$50 'crossfit' gloves that claim to prevent blisters, I've also seen glove liners that prevent blisters for motorcross made of kevlar and other materials, I'm thinking about trying those. I already do a huge variety of grip work so I already have a lot of calluses I don't know what the hell to do it's very frustrating I've almost considered just not doing swings anymore because it isn't worth the ripped off skin, however it is a good exercise. It doesn't stop me from doing other exercises but it makes it more difficult with the constant stinging and burning from the missing pieces of skin as I'm trying to lift.
DonaldShim What about chalk? Try to chalk up thoroughly and start with only moderate reps. Don't get carried away with rep range. See how your hands respond to lower reps (add chalk before each set). I've used the t-handle for years and my hands don't have any problems. I suppose it's like anything and the body can adapt/respond if given ample time to adjust.
+DonaldShim It's probably the excess rotation of the bell at the apogee. Try running a free rotating pipe through the junction piece so the bell can reach its height without twisting in your hands.
Bud Jefferies, in his awesome book "I Will Be Iron," suggests do swings with bare hands then in the same work out put on some gloves. Progressively build your hand endurance by adding a few bare hand swings each time. For example do 50 bare handed and the rest with gloves (obviously gloves that are not too thick). Next week maybe 60 or 75 bare handed, then the rest with gloves. The next week a few more bare handed maybe 80 or even 100. Progress SLOWLY, and your hands will get tougher. If you find your hands getting torn up again back off and progress SLOWLY again. Hope this helps
What is your recommendation for a narrower grip for women. The T-handle gouges my thighs during the down part of the swing. Is this just me or does anyone else have this problem with needing a narrower grip? Thanks!
Ross Enamait Haha nice. I was thinking about modifying the design up to a 16" vertical pipe nipple instead of 12" so as to fit ten 25's on there. Would you happen to have any concerns about doing that?
+xjusticex2013x The problem with 16 could be that it will hit the floor (not enough clearance). You can fit more than 8 plates if you use (find) thinner 25's. Walmart used to sell a thin plate that would easily allow for 10
Ross Enamait Hey Ross would these happen to be the plates you were talking about? It looks like the 25's are quite thin and the smaller hole might be a better fit for the t-handle anyway. www.walmart.com/ip/CAP-Barbell-1-Cast-Iron-Weight-Plates-Black/20500708
Ross, your DIY videos are AWESOME! I'm building a home gym in my garage and I've been watching all your videos! Keep on keeping on!
I'm going to Lowe's on this Thursday to get the maters to build this!!! Awesome vid!!!

Thanks mate! I made your dip belt tonight (doing dips tomorrow) and I might make one of these on Saturday for legs!

Excellent video, thanks coach.
@methaddict99 - It is an old bulldog collar from Ironmind. Happy holidays as well!
Another awesome video. Thanks.
you can get plastic caps to cover the threads at the plumbing supply in your store where you got the 3/4" pipe parts. look in the PVC pipe parts.
@richard2mitchell - Check the homemade equipment stick from my site's forum. There is currently one homemade vest option listed.
@1xACE - I wouldn't say that it is a sub, as the two movements are quite different. You can certainly do well without deadlifts however. I pulled almost 500 pounds without ever training the deadlift. Yes, that's what I have (although less expensive options are certainly available)
@milesrulezz - Random won't produce specific results. Some amount of planning is almost always useful. Failure to plan is planning to fail.
@hethuszar01 - I suppose you could, although I don't believe it would be necessary. For single arm work, you can do just fine with something such as a d-bell.

This is awesome. You rule Ross.
@atomi50 - I'll let you know if I find something. I already own a few vests however, so this isn't a project I've ever tackled.
Great video. I'm going to my local hardware store to get the parts. Too bad I had spent over $200 on kettlebells in the past.
Hey Ross great video, any advice how to make a homemade weight vest that is comfortable, durable and that a user has the ability to pack different weight on it?
Cool video Ross - way to help out the fitness community mate.
@onetao8 - Yes, I train fighters

@rossenamait are you going to look in to how to make a vest?

Ross, what collar did you use for the t-handle? Thanks
great power!
Do you know phantom T handle bar?
@Sandra122253 - You could try using smaller pipe nipples and perhaps alter your stance slightly.
whats the most you ever had on it?
What is your recommendation for a narrower grip for women. The T-handle gouges my thighs during the down part of the swing. Is this just me or does anyone else have this problem with needing a narrower grip?
Thanks!
I made one that holds up to 200lbs
How the hell do you not hurt your back Ross? I own 5 bells and my heaviest is 76 and even that is brutal haha.
How many 25's can you fit on there?
+xjusticex2013x I can fit 8. You can see a more recent example within this highlight clip - ruclips.net/video/F2KhOikihvE/видео.html
Ross Enamait Haha nice. I was thinking about modifying the design up to a 16" vertical pipe nipple instead of 12" so as to fit ten 25's on there. Would you happen to have any concerns about doing that?
