    Part of me says this is where the sweet spot for the EV world should be.....at least for now. A city car with many applications. I recently saw a clever device that turns street lamps into Level 2 chargers. Widespread avail of charging combined with an under $20K price could give life to this category.

    Great review. This really is the first EV I've ever found appealing. one red light mention should have been the charging time. 37 hours? how does that compare to the industry average? If Honda brings their E car to the states that will be real competition.

    • @anthonyc8499
      @anthonyc8499 6 месяцев назад +4

      The 37 hours is using a 120v wall outlet from 5%, and it’s actually a TERRIBLE metric. More usefully, is to think of it in terms of 4 miles of range for every hour on a wall outlet or 30 miles / hour using a 240v wallbox charger.

    As a happy owner of two Fiats I'd really like to see the company sell the 500e here as a mainstream product like the old 500, not drop "special editions" on us once or twice a year as they currently plan to do. Stellantis markets Fiat here in the US as an upmarket brand, but honestly if they brought vehicles here like the Tipo and Panda and positioned Fiat as a hipper, budget-friendly alternative they could generate sales that would otherwise go to the likes of Toyota and Honda.

    Also thanks for not being bought by “Big Charger”! Most car reviewers say everyone *has* to get a Level 2, but these city focused cars are well suited to be charged with a regular wall outlet since I’d bet the vast majority don’t go more than 40 miles per day

  • @anthonyc8499

    Hey Tom, would it be more appropriate to suggest charging speeds in terms of miles of range per hour? So a 120v wall outlet is 3 or 4 miles per hour and L2 closer to 30 miles? People can then gauge that to how long they usually park overnight, so maybe 30-40 miles recharged daily on a wall socket. It’s less daunting to think about that way, imo.

    I agree with what others said about this compared to a new (or even used) new LEAF or Mini SE EV.
    When the 1st Fiat 500e in 2014, Chrysler's Chief Executive Sergio Marchionne 500e famously said to an audience at the Brookings Institute: " “I hope you don’t buy it because every time I sell one it costs me $14,000; I’m honest enough to tell you that.”
    IF I recall correctly, the 1st generation sold so poorly that Fiat had to severely discount them ($10K?). I have an acquaintance in SoCa who bought one for a commute that fit in its range and it was amazingly cheap to buy and drive back then.
    At this price, with this range (even though it is a big improvement over the 2014 model's 84 miles), and lack of dealer network it looks to me like this is still a money losing proposition for Fiat.

    Thank you for reviewing a vehicle with the appearance and the size of a normal car, not a humongous SUV or a pickup truck. As much as I like the 500 styling, it is a very niche car. Probably will be great for downtown London or Paris, maybe for San Francisco as well (one third of new vehicle registrations in SF are EVs). But $35K? Fifteen years ago one could buy a subcompact for $15K returning 30-35 MPG, and keep extra $20K for movies and night clubs. FIAT itself stopped selling gasoline-powered 500 in the U.S. Bring back the old times. P.S. "Tossible"?

      A couple things- The US and European range rating procedures are different, the US tends to be more realistic. You might have a different configuration like smaller wheels that can be more efficient (I don't know the Euro specs). I'll assume the pack is the same kWh rating. Also, I drive more aggressively than some and around half of my miles were on the highway. I'm going for real world ability. Good for you for being more efficient..

    Stellantis probably doesn´t expect big sales numbers with this 500e in the US. They do sell well in Europe, where this car makes sense. If you would drive in France, a RAV4 or Rogue will feel too clumsy and big for parking spaces and small roads, not to mention underground parking where a RAV4 will curb the wheels and scrape the bumpers on the first go. Anyone who has been to Paris or Rome probably has seen what parking on a small street looks like.
    Also a small electric car has smaller car tax and sales tax, which favors smaller economical cars. To me 500e is part of Fiat´s identity, they make those smaller cars because even though it isn´t profitable it marks the identity of the brand.

    I test drove an abarth years ago. Brand new. I liked it but I wanted to pay off my current vehicles loan. I take it they won’t make the gas version of this??? It’s all the car I need lol. I like small. I have a Jeep renegade it’s cousin or half brother lol. Too bad they didn’t want to do an EV Jeep renegade version. I like this better than the bolt. I actually just saw these at the dealership when I took my car for recall work. I should have test drove it. Seems all they have are red color ones. I want a white one. I wish they would just forget about back seats!!!! Just make it a flat deep floor for cargo! We don’t buy these vehicles for backseat passengers. It’s for two people only.

      Are you talking about the Citroen Ami? It’s effectively an enclosed golf cart. It would never pass American crash standards and Americans would never buy anything that small or slow. Pretty much the same for any of those European cars (even the Chinese sourced ones) that are under $25,000.

    For $10k less you can buy a Toyota Corolla hybrid with more than double the range and probably double the residual value. Tom you really loose credibility when you pitch something like the 500e as a good city car. If you put your EV bias aside you'd have given this nothing but a big red light.

    • @DrivenCarReviews
      @DrivenCarReviews  6 месяцев назад

      The right tool for the job Doug. Corolla hybrid isn't nearly as fun to drive, harder to park and lacks personalty. That's fine for many traditional buyers. My bias is towards cars that nail their mission, ICE or EV. I enjoyed my time in the 500e, so did my passengers (something I pay attention to). Value is different for every buyer. Ask anyone choosing between a Tahoe and Escalade.

  • @r5LgxTbQ

    "city car" is nonsense. You know how gas cars always have a range of 300-500 miles? It's not because that's the limit of how much gas it could hold... they could double the tank capacity if they wanted to, it's not like a 30 gallon tank takes up *that* much space even in a compact vehicle. They have that range because that's what people are comfortable with for the kind of car they buy. So the gasoline range of a car could be said to be the ideal range for its segment. And how much highway range does the gasoline Fiat 500 have? Almost 350 miles...
