  • A minimalist cantilevered nightstand. Fits well over a baseboard heater but also wouldn't block a heat register underneath. And has enough room under it for a wastebasket or something else.

      TBO, he didn't do the jump test from the front, with his weight on the center. I only say this because that's what my kids would do...lean on or put their weight on the FRONT, where it is weakest. That being said. Excellent build, and something I would struggle to make, let alone design.

      I've drilled a hole through mine so I can also use the bucket as a basket for trash.

    I wasn't sure about the raised trim around the top then I remembered how often I manage to knock my my glasses into the crack between the bed and night stand.

      I knock almost anything on the nightstand, so it is a cool feature. And if you spill water or something it can be better contained, my wife is a specialist spilling water on hers.

      just move your night stand closer to your bed so there is no crack. Problem solved.

      @@R168Y it's impossible to get the nightstand any closer to the mattress, there is a headboard and wooden rail in the way.

    They remind me of the old school desk that I sat in every classroom I was in during grade school. Very cool.

    My sister is building a house in the future. Showed this to her, and she loves the design. So I guess I'm ordering the plans soon... lol. I won't be able to resist making it my own, though.

    I recently moved in with my girlfriend, and I really felt you when you said "now Rachel wants me to make two of them." I love being able to make things for my girlfriend and our house! It's funny how the list of things to build grows faster than I can check them off, though

    I like that the trim forms raised fiddles around the top edge. Stops glasses, phones and stuff from falling.

    The pins to stop the drawer is quite a neat idea. Haven't seen that before.

      it made me wonder if there was a better way of setting them in case you wanted to remove the drawer. maybe if one pair of dowels were set in a way that they could, with some force, slide up and down.

      I think you could screw little blocks of wood in there instead of one pair of dowels. That way you can unscrew them easily to remove the drawer. Or am I missing something? Never built a drawer myself.

    I really like the lip around the top. Has a sort of maritime feel to it. Plus it prevents your phone and other misc pocket junk from falling off.

    Phenomenal as always! I was expecting to see the box joint jig make an appearance initially, but then thought ‘ahh pantarouter jointery’ ... You have all the tools in your joint bag!!

    I like that you showed that while a Pantorouter would've been easier, it's quite possible to make strong and accurate enough joints with a much simpler (to build accurately) tenon jig, and a strip sander for radius forming.

    Great project! My favorite trick you used was cutting the drawer sides when you put the second side against the first to square the end without hitting your stop block. Great way to maximize efficiency.

    As a woodworker my most difficult customer is my wife. Even when I make mockups and use Sketch up, requirements are vague and often contradictory. I trust Rachael likes her new nightstands. It's nice to use your talents to bring happiness to your loved ones. Finally - how often have we seen Matthias wear a shop apron?
