How to sew a recessed zipper into any bag pattern.
You can pretty much add this to the top of any bag which has a lining, so even if the pattern doesn’t call for it, you can split the lining and add in the recessed zipper. Just remember to place any inside pockets accordingly.
In the video I show how to sew the recessed zipper and then add it to a simple tote bag. At the same time, I’m trying out supporting the bag with headliner fabric too. It’s all of a bit of an experiment, and not everything goes to plan!

When using naked foam (without the tricot covering), you can use a lightweight fusible interfacing on the side away from the fabric and it will feed through easily. Also, if you use a Teflon foot or a walking foot it will feed easily. If you don’t have the special feet you can put a piece of tape on the bottom of your foot and it will slide easily. Finally, you can put a piece of tissue paper (that you would use in gift wrapping) under your foam and it will easily feed through your machine. Hope these tips are helpful to you. I enjoy your videos. Thank you for making them available.

    Hi Debbie,
It's very easy to use the headline foam, I did exactly what you did which made it FIGHT against any movement, but the answer is really simple. You simply attach the OPPOSITE side of the foam you used and it will glide along. The side I mean actually has a woven, more slick surface (similar to the effect you would have using a teflon foot, but it is already on the foam. In fact it is the visible side you see when the headliner is used in a car. You dont see the foam side). Once you just turn it over, you won't use anything else because it is perfect for bag making! Oh and you did an excellent job with the recessed zipper!

One of my favorite parts of this great tutorial is your fumbling a bit with the foam just like I do as I try new things. I'd love to be right there with you in your sewing room learning together. Thanks for taking us along on your experiment - I learned so much!! I've learned that if you have fabric on both sides of the "headliner" or what I use which is Bosal In-R-Foam plus (fusible foam made in Maine) it slides through the machine. I also have a powerful machine now - Juki 2010Q - and that will sew through most anything as it's semi-industrial and built for production. I love the way your bag turned out!!

Thanks for this great tutorial. BTW, my sewing teacher say to place a strip of tissue paper along where we are going to sew when the fabric is sticky or slippery or shifts around. I always keep the extra bits of tissue paper from when I cut out a bought pattern because that is the best tissue paper to sew through, and it pulls away nicely after sewing.

  • @digging4roots

I'd also like to add to the suggestions, cut out the box corners areas and any other seam allowances from the foam so it's not as thick and bulky to work with. I've added various brands of foam in several different ways since I do remove all seam allowances, including the boxed corners. I've quilted it to the outside fabric, quilted it to the lining, used temporary spray adhesive to hold it in place while assembling and I've used iron on webbing to attach it. They each have pros and cons and you'll have to experiment with what works best for you.
Also, when joining the lining to the outer, I open the seams (when feasible) that are aligned to reduce bulk.
When making the recessed zipper, I would definitely cut the foam so it wasn't in the areas to be turned or in/under the seam for the zipper. After attaching the recessed zipper component to the top and bottom inner liner, I'd top stitch the seams pointing downward so the lining lies flatter when assembled and the lining will be less inclined to bulge and pull upward when removing items from the bag. Finally, before closing the bottom liner seam (used for turning the bag inside out), I reach in and tack the box corners of the liner to the outer fabric using the seam allowances. This reduces the liner shifting and pulling out of the bag as well.
Forgot: I make the liner's finished dimensions 1/4" smaller except at the top where the inner and outer fabrics have to be exactly the same. The result is an upside down trapezoid with the sides and bottom slightly smaller. It makes for a nicer fit.

I’ve never had any issue sewing with the foam I was a lil surprised . I take my foam all the way to edge I don’t cut it shorter I also buy the foam that’s one side an adhere to my fabric I don’t but the sew in and I usually quilt it with some lines or free motion it looks really good quilted. Try that next time. You can also use your walking foot when you have many layer. It works well. I like the fabric you chose I bought some canvas yesterday to make me some wallets and matching bags

I used headliner, actually it was Bosal In R Form on a diaper bag recently and hated it .. I don't like a "foamy" appearance .. I always use canvas as an interlining and went back to that .. I was unhappy that I had to give it to someone as a gift but fortunately she didn't sew so didn't know how much I hated it!! She loved the bag! Great tutorial.

I've been wanting to do one of these for quite a while but your most helpful video will be my push. I plan on trying it soon. BTW tissue paper on the bottom - like for stuffing gift bags with and a roller foot will work splendidly. The tissue tares away with ease and prevents the adherence of the headliner material, the roller foot just glides across effortlessly.

So Sew Easy: how did you get the perfect solid blue edge on the handles? I'm guessing the print was a thin strip, the solid was wider strip, sewn on both sides (so it wouldn't lay flat. Once sewn, turn inside out and manipulate so solid on back and even trimmed dark blue sides. Am I in any way close and if not would you share your method. I have to say that the trim adds so much more class to the bag and that your video is just what i was looking for and am ready to give it a whirl.

Besides a Teflon foot, or Walking foot, a cheaper way if you don't possess either of those items, is to run a strip of Scotch tape over the stitching line, the foot will glide smoothly. You simply remove it after sewing! hope that helps.

  • @milburnstudiospei9189
    @milburnstudiospei9189 9 лет назад +1

For your problem with sewing on foam - I use a little trick when sewing with plastics. Buy some fine toile (netting or veil) about 1/16" spacing or smaller, and cut into 2"strips. Lay a 2" strip over top of your seam. The foot will glide easily over top, and can easily be torn away after, or just leave it in place for extra body if it will be hidden. I have heard that a Teflon foot will also work well, but haven't yet tried it.

I've just made a similar bag, but I sewed the outer then the inner bag then both together, and it worked ok, but I think your assembly method would be better. Cut the foam the same size as your panels, I find it easy to sew. Is your foam the same both sides? Mine has a grey fabric on one side. Thanks for posting your video.

  • @wmael7550

Hi. I love your bag videos! I've not tried it on anything yet, but my though is to get a smoother glide of the fabric while sewing across the foam material could one try laying a small strip of fabric or other material the length of the sewing areas, then stitch. My thought is that this strip of fabric or material would give the sewing foot and feed mechanism something to grab onto and pull that is not so spongy to create a smoother glide and more steady stitching?

I appreciate your tutorial. I might suggest that you find a source for Annie's "Soft and Stable". It too has a foam core with a very light outer layer. It is very easy to use & easy to turn inside out. I usually sew the Soft and Stable to the main outside fabric with a 1/8 inch seam all round the piece before I start to assemble multiple pieces. The Soft and Stable is 58 inches wide and does provide sufficient strength for bags to stand up and the outside fabrics to be smooth.

Hi Deby, I'm not familiar with the foam, but I also advise you try with a Teflon foot/Non-Stick foot (machine brands have different names for the same thing), and for the underneath, sew with narrow strips of a paper product along the seam that you can tear off later. Cheap tissue paper, tearaway, even newspaper with the grain of the product going lengthways to tear easily. You may even find the feed dog might work with the paper underneath, depending on the stickiness of the foam.

Did you try using your walking foot? I can see where the foam would present problems. Although, I understand it makes a nice finish for a bag. I wonder if a plastic foot for sewing leather would work as well as the walking foot? Maybe a different needle as well. What did you use. The bag looks great and I really like the fabric you chose. I'd say it's a success. Definitely let us know the outcome if you try working with the headliner again. By the way, where did you purchase the headliner? I'm getting ready to head back to the Netherlands but I hope to hear from you when I get there. Thanks, Debi. Another very nice tutorial.

VERY easy to sew through, no special needle or foot required (I always use a walking foot to keep my fabric evenly fed through my Janome Magnolia machine). I have made several items with this, no problems. Bosal also makes a version with glue only on one side.

I used faux leather as an interlining, and my method may work with your foam. I did not sew the sides.I just sewed the top and let gravity do the rest. I cut the width of the faux leather about an eighth of an inch smaller than the outside fabric. My method lessens the bulk at the side seams. The faux leather gives my handbag a little body and structure, but it isn't stiff. It worked very well.

I know how to sew the foamy material easily. You put the foamy side inside. Leave the other side (fabric ish side)outside. The machine go though that side easily.

+selly lusiana There isn't really a pattern for this, it's just a sample to show you the technique which you can use in any pattern that you have or like. If you do want some bag patterns, may I suggest checking for some here - so-sew-easy.com//?s=bag+pattern

I have had to use either a teflon foot and the feed-dog side with layer of tissue paper or wax paper to get headliner, some vinyl, faix leather and foam lined upholstery and home decor fabrics to advance and not stick while trying to stitch in machine or at the feed dogs. Probably can use a tearaway embroidery sheet(s).

one could try a foot with made of silicone - it is expensive but easier to use on those types of fabric...great tutorial on this zip insert and bag

I see somebody had a trick for the headliner fabric relating to which side of the fabric is up, but I have an additional trick for keeping your fabrics in check as you sew!

Didn't read all the comments but I use wax paper when sewing material of this nature. I cut about 1" wide strips and place under and over the material where the seam is sewn. After completed I simply tear the wax paper away.

Hi Debbie! I love your bag and the way you presented yourself. If my tote has side gussets, how do I put the zipper? Must the gussets reach the recessed tabs or just below it? I am geometrically challenged. Appreciate any help.

I can't really picture what you mean Srade. Do you have any pictures? If you post it on the SSE FB page at facebook.com/soseweasy we could all take a look.

+So Sew Easy I'd also like to know how to do this on a bag with gussets. Fab tutorial! I've made two bags with gussets and for the life of me, just couldn't find a way to do it easily. Ended up hand sewing the sides to the lining...just a pain in the butt. But thanks for showing the process, great tutorial!

+Rhonda Hazle Oh, I forgot to say that I didn't want open ends....I had to completely close the bag...no open holes at all.

How would you suggest I add a single cross body strap to the two short sides of the purse? I don’t see a way to either add them inseam or as top stitched onto the exterior of the bag.
