  • Daniel Smith's Cerulean Blue Chromium (PB36) is one of my favourite colours. It can be used on its own straight from the tube, or mixed with other colours to creative beautiful mixtures.

      I'm going to create more sketches to use for examples before I make more of such videos. I think it's more useful to see the paints being used in actual paintings.

    I just bought this color based on a friend's recommendation, but haven't had a chance to play with it much. I can't wait to get my hands dirty and delve into the wonderful world of Cerulean Blue, Chromium! Thanks for giving me some mixing ideas to explore further, Teoh!

    Cool colour combinations. I thought the colour separation in your colour combinations was because of the way you mixed them, rather than being an inherent behaviour of the colours. I want to try CBC with the Quin Deep Gold in particular. Thank you, Teoh!

    Nice, thank you for sharing. Now I have to try this with PB35 (Schmincke Cobalt Azure) which is the pigment I use. I find the same separation of colours in the mix that you show in the sketchbook and the swatches.

    Just curious, but why is granulating considered to be so great to many artists? I like it fine, but find that it can be a challenge to work with digitally after scanning. Just wondering your thoughts. Thank you for another wonderful video on a fabulous color! Cheers! :)

    • @teohyc
      @teohyc  7 лет назад +5

      +M.D. Campbell Granulation is a characteristic that you can count on if you need some texture.

    • @MDCampbell
      @MDCampbell 7 лет назад +3

      While I understand granulation, I just wonder why so many artists tend to "ooh" and "ahh" over it. Again, I like it fine and all, but it sometimes doesn't transfer well after digital scanning for print. Just curious is all.

    • @lilitincher4973
      @lilitincher4973 7 лет назад +2

      It is just a preference. Like Teoh, I believe granulation is very lovely. I do not do translate my work into digital, so I cannot comment on your problem. It seems to be a nuisance to you, so I would suggest not using granulating paints. There are many other paints within lines that are not granulating, Daniel Smith is very granulating, and is therfore my personal favorite. For you on the other hand, Holbein would be a perfect solution, if you wish to work with watercolors that are non granulating
      As I mentioned earlier, it's just a matter of personal prefrence.

    • @MDCampbell
      @MDCampbell 7 лет назад +5

      Hi Lili Tincher! Thank you for your kind reply. I do appreciate the granulating effect, when called for, as in plein air or even fine art or sketching. In my work, however, it sometimes can create a texture where type is going to be overlaid. It can be a challenge to soften or blend those areas that are heavily grained. I agree with you about it being a preference. I just think it's kind of funny, as I've seen videos where folks get super excited over it! lol! I guess I've seen it for so long, now, that it's just normal. I guess I never saw it as a feature. Also, it's funny, I've used M.Graham, Schmincke, W&N, and other paints for years, yet I've never made the jump to Daniel Smith. I know I should, but I think it may be an expensive road to travel! lol! Sorry for the long reply - but thank you, again! Cheers! :D

    It seems to be a preferred 'sky' colour for many Southern Hemisphere countries, something about it. Maybe the granulation too.

    Thanks for this video. If I had seen this video before I bought my phthalo blue from schminke, I think I would have change my mind for this beautiful cerulean blue, especially for the sky. I found really hard to make nice skies with phthalo blue. It stains the paper too fast and I found really hard to control it. I think I am definitely going to change my watercolor brand ( which is White knights) to Daniel Smith or Mission gold, not decided yet. Thanks to you Teoh.

    Thank you for the review on this color. I've been wondering whether or not to get cerulean blue or cerulean blue chromium instead. I don't enjoy CB much because the DS one I have is kinda... thick? It needs to be prepped with a small spritz or a dollop of water (I dry them out in half pans) before I can get a decent amount of pigment on my brush, and when I use it, it's kinda goopy and I have to avoid fiddling with it too much or else, it'll clump up or streak. It's similar in behavior with DS' cobalt violet deep. I don't know if I just have a bad tube, or if I'm using it incorrectly, or that's just the way it is.
    Sorry for the long comment haha I'm looking forward to your comparison of cerulean blue and the chromium version.

    Interesting review. Beautiful colour. Looks a bit like manganese blue which I was planning to get. After watching this review it makes me wonder if chromium pigments all behave the same: I have chromium green dark which had separated from the tube too and which also doesn't mix well with other colours. Maybe because chromium is a very heavy pigment?
    I'd love to see more of these videos on special pigments. (Y)

    • @teohyc
      @teohyc  7 лет назад +1

      It could be that the pigment is very heavy. This is the only colour that I have that separates so cleanly from the gum arabic.
      I've a tube of Manganese Blue (Hue) from Daler Rowney and indeed the two colours look very similar to each other. I prefer the granulation from Cerulean Blue Chromium though.

    Hi Teoh! I finally got this Cerulean Blue Chromium and was comparing it to Cerulean Blue.
    I do hope you get around to doing the comparison your mentioned in this video.
    It seems Cerulean Blue is the actual pigment whereas Cerulean Blue Chromium is a cobalt-based hue. After testing it I'm not really crazy about it in comparison and find it muddy compared with real Cerulean Blue. I know the CBChromium is about a dollar cheaper, but it's SO not worth it in my opinion.

    D. Smitty's Cerulean Blue's cleaner and brighter than their Cerulean Blue Chromium? That's a noodle scratcher of a sales pitch. This looks nice. I've been looking for something to replace Winny Newts' Cerulean. Their Cerulean's a looker, but it struggles to do any heavy lifting. Rewetting it's like coaxing a shy kitty out of its hidey hole.

    hi teoh, I have a question about sennelier water colors, I put them in some half pand and its been a week and they still havent dryed a bit, will they ever dry? :0

    • @Watching_Koi
      @Watching_Koi 7 лет назад +2

      Sennelier puts honey into their paints. The honey makes the colors brighter and rewet easily, but it also makes it so they don't dry all the way. They'll always be a bit sticky.

    • @teohyc
      @teohyc  7 лет назад +5

      Try this. Close your watercolour box and leave a small gap, then put them under the sun to heat up. This should remove all the water. The surface of the paints may still look glossy but if they are not soft and do not flow, that's good enough.

      I know Cadmium paints have to be labelled to highlight the toxicity. Not sure about Chromium. There aren't any special label at least for Cerulean Blue Chromium. You can see the toxicity labels of Daniel Smith paints on this Dick Blick page www.dickblick.com/products/daniel-smith-extra-fine-watercolors/
