  • How to Set Up the Coils on ANY Briggs and Stratton 20hp V Twin Engine.
These are on a John Deere L111 Lawn Tractor
Lets put a VOM or volt ohm meter on them and see.
Then we can clean the magnets and gap them!

Very helpful.. dealing with a what I believe is driver side coil failing under load. Spark plug wasn't burned clean like the passenger side...sounds smooth under no load. For grins and giggles will switch around plugs as well as check ohms.

Exactly Gene,, I should have made more mention of that but I was busy with that stupid call and distracted, trying to earn a livin and all
On my 20hp Kohler I went to a different heat range for now as I know that motor may have other issues.
I did mention the possibility of buying a match coil set just to rule out any spark related unbalance. Naturally check the new coils just in case!
I'm tryin to learn ways of sharing this info..Not as easy as I may have thought.
Thanks for watching, good luck with your machine!
      Stay tuned!

@@TheNovaJohn ya done good job explaining the testing....this rider I bought had been setting outdoors uncovered for around 2 years. I never thought about rust/grounding issues.. so I'll be checking that, as well

Thanx Gene,,,,Yes I speak of this often, with coils and really any electrical system. With the coil mount to engine, many people overlook this. The dissimilar metals expand at different rates and can make a poor connection. Rust and oxidation forms right at this point. Also the 2 metals create a type of electrolysis. making things worse.
Your correct, left outside and not touched, add age and water....eesshhh

I have the L111 and get no spark out of the drivers side. Did all the checks and both are the same however the ohms from spark plug wire to that ignition lug that runs back to the key reads 4.5k on both the sparking one and the non sparking one. I’m ordering at least one new coil to check it. I may have been running on one cylinder for a while!

      Nice,, good luck.
I think there may be a diode in the harness somewhere.
I have another one of these engines out in the boneyard burried and its a mess!
One of these days I want to get it running again and show a number of details including wiring.
Check your plugs too, maybe get 2 new plugs and you should check the compression as well!
If your engine has been running on one cylinder you may have gas washed it and this would damage the cylinder.
Or it may be down on compression due to valves or some other issue.

Thanks for the how to video. I have a jd with v-twin that is hard starting and when it does start ,it stalls out like running out of gas. I have rebuilt then later replaced the carb and still having the same problem. Im gonna repkace the vacuum hose to the fuel pump next. The fuel pump has been replaced also. Any suggestions would be great?

You could try taking a can of gummout and spraying around the carb, intake area, not in the carb but all around looking for vacuum leaks..It would need to be running, maybe spray a little in the carb to keep it running long enough to then spray around and see...It may rule out a vacuum leak at least
