And personally i think all the Persona 4 waifus are great although i only romance Rise in my every single playthrough since when you romance her, the entire game becomes more natural to play. I just finished playing P4 Golden. And I am glad I chose Marie as my romantic interest. The title is just pure fact though.

I like Marie and I will always defend her existence in Golden. Her implementation to the main story, considering how important she is in the grand scheme is shitty ngl, but I really do like Marie as a character, not my favorite, but certainly not the worst.
I can't help but feel I felt robbed of her development though since they add all that in the Golden Anime instead in the game itself.
I don’t like her poems either they’re super cringe and she treats everyone like crap and she never gets called out on it.
That's probably my biggest grip about her.
Her relevance to the plot is pretty much non-existent.
But as a character I don't think she's bad.
@@Kingofavolon The point of the poem is it's cringy. She is bad at it, and she know it too hence she wanted to hide it. Someone **CoughMargaretcough** kept sneaking it into Yu's hand though, as a hint to what her thought is like, as well as a foreshadowing about her role. Blaming Marie as a character for that is kinda unfair.
And yeah she's rude, but it's quite clear that's mostly because she was never taught how to behave socially. My nephew behaved worse than her if not scolded , and Marie has worse social-related knowledge than my nephew. To some it's still not tolerable regardless of reasons given and I understand that POV too. But err, I just find her hilarious.

I think I would've liked her more if she was blended in to the story better. It just wasn't well done and my first blind impression on her was not very good at all. I get that it was purposely added that her poems were cringey but it was enough to make me less interested in her social link. I could tell they just added her because new waifu, but to me she was just very.. bland I guess and her relevance to the story is just not there
I like Marie. She is cute, funny, and I can deal with the emo thing. She works well with the rest of the group, though scenes are limited. Nice to see them all hang out at the end of her main story chain.
And yes, she is clearly waifu material, but I feel at the time Golden is set it would actually be a bad idea for her to get into a romance. I feel at that time what she needs are friends, and a romance would actually confuse matters more for her.

Everyone says that Yosuke is the 'i'll die for you' friend, but no one mentions that Marie takes that up to 11 when it comes to the hollow forest since she was resolved to die for the entire group.
Anyways, going through her social link by playing p4g was a lot different from watching let's plays. There were details about her SL that I only realized when I played the game. She wasn't as rude as rumours made her out to be, she was just awkward in her interactions overall. And yes she could have been implemented better but I still enjoyed her interactions with the Investigation Team overall.
I also appreciated seeing Yukiko's talks about friendship and spending youth with Yosuke challenged her thinking of 'there is no truth to find' without saying it to her face. And her social link ending with her choosing to focus on memories present and future over her past was a strong choice. And yes the poetry is bad but that's the point. She's trying to awkwardly figure herself out and the only means she has is her poems.
The “Yosuke will now die for you” quote came from the Hiimdaisy comic just like fsteak. It’s a quote that people find funny, which is why it is said a lot.

I know that most people like "perfect" waifus like Kasumire or Makoto or Naoto but Marie's awkwardness and social inept are really charming for me, like Yusuke and Akechi. I always laugh when these characters are on screen.
What I find amusing about Marie and KaSumire is that they are the only ones who confessed first directly and how they are connected to Narukami and Amamiya respectively
@@enriquepowers Yeah, the focus girl in Persona remakes are always connected to the MC in some way or the other. Maya for P2, Aigis for P3, Marie for P4, KaSumire for P5. That's the closest thing to a cannon ship Atlus will give us. But P5 also seemed like Atlus shipping Akiren and Akechi lol. I thought I'm gonna see a lot of the new girl and was ready to ship her with Akiren but Akechi get the spotlight lmao. I wasn't even shipping those two until Royal

I find Makoto pretty akward too, actually. Yes, she’s intelligent and everything, but she can be really akward in social situations. For Sumire, I don’t know, haven’t played Royal.
And I would never date Naoto, mostly because she fits so well with Kanji.

Don’t really like Tsunderes but Marie’s alright namely cause she’s just verbally Tsundere and not super violent. She also turns pretty deredere after the last dungeon.
No, she just goes into the dere part. Deredere means the character is lovestruck from the getgo and is more or less open about it (in other words, Rise). Marie is a classic tsundere, hostile at first but gradually softens up, eventually going full dere. If she was hostile and remained so for the duration of the story, she'd be a tsuntsun.
Let's be real here, despite all our personal preferences and "best girls", in the P4 era, Marie is Yu's canon end game and honestly, I'm personally fine with that. Unlike most I did like her character and enjoyed how she went from annoying Tsundere, to distressed lost girl to playfully wholesome and natural. I enjoy how deeply connected she is with Yu, how she teases Rise, and the vibe she adds to the atmosphere of the storyline.

There isn't a canon romance route in the persona games, the game do push some more than others but that's it. There isn't a canon romance options because when atlus do Spin-offs and shit they need to give something to every single person and the girl they went for, it's not that hard.

While in none of the persona series is there a "Cannon Waifu" There are characters that the story pushes the player to interact with. Like Makoto in P5 or Rise in P4.

I feel like there really wasnt one that was pushed above the others in base P5 (the high knowledge and charm requirements makes Makoto less likely than the others to be maxed out on a first playthrough). Sumi is definitely the one that P5R pushes as the quasi-canon waifu though

I never understood why people hated her,her poetry and tsunderness was annoying occasionally,but she grew. She’s fun and airy and if those traits i mentioned weren’t as prominent she’d easily be more people’s wives. She’s pretty great and has a good design and I like her a lot!

I honestly have a hard time picking between Marie and Yukiko. Also it so happens Marie is voiced by one of my favorite voice actresses in the Japanese dub Kana Hanazawa.

I think the main problem isn't Marie's character. She's a tsundere who acts tough but is actually really soft once she warms up to you and is awkward when it comes to talking to social interaction, sounds familiar? Because to me that sounds like Makoto Nijima, who is one of the more popular maincast characters of P5
So what's the problem? The fact that you're sort of forced to love her.
You wanna get the best ending? You need to finish the link with Marie. You wanna watch the P4Golden anime? Hope you don't prefer any of the other girls because Yu x Marie is canon. You don't wanna have to read Marie's poems every single playthrough? Too bad! You're forced to read them every. Single. Time.
In P5 you can at least decide wheter you like Makoto or not for yourself. You had the option, the choice, you could decide for yourself wheter or not to come close to her and maybe romance her if you enjoy her social link.
With Marie you're forced even if you really aren't that into her and don't enjoy her character. She's constantly pushed into your face from both the game design aspect and the writing. I think if Marie didn't have a sub-plot all about other people loving her instantly then she really would be regarded as a good character by most.
(She'd still have nothing against the true best waifu, Adachi, however.)

Huh thought I was alone in Marie being my persona 4 waifu... She is pretty much as canon as you can get too without giving a canon. Being Izanami no mikoto makes her the Izanami before she became fragmented from eating the food of Yomi essentially since Yu is Izanagi no mikoto Marie is the goddess that his soul truly loved and became stricken with grief over. Izanagi no mikoto only divorced Izanami because of the taint from the food of Yomi having fragmented her and having spurned her wrath in said state. In golden I was moved by Marie's story and how we essentially repaired what was thought to be unfixable (the fragmentation of Izanami). Don't get me wrong I've played through every girls romance on separate playthroughs and did a harem playthrough too but anytime I didn't involve Marie romantically it just felt wrong since I know the lore and mythological implications it has that they belong together. Marie's poems work better in Japanese btw.
The way I see it, one would argue that most of the reason people hated her is because her implementation (Yes, I am looking at you Velvet room amateur hour, just let me fuse my personae and get out of here) plus her design (Let's be fair, she looks like she raided a hot topic, to the point where her design was not only designed to stand out, but looks like something that would fit well in *My Immortal* out of all places) and overall attitude made her a character that doesn't look out of place in a fanfic and for a lot of people felt that she was shoehorned in not unlike a Mary Sue character (The fact that she's literally named named "Marie" doesn't help [Though I will recognize that she maintains the trend of named othewordly characters not having a traditionally japanese name that Teddie started]).
There's also the problem that her growth during her SL doesn't feel exactly natural, unlike with the rest of the cast, with this growth being better executed in the Anime which came out 3 years later.
At the end of the day, while I can agree that the degree of hate people have for her may be irrational, I cannot in good faith say that it is not unjustified, and this is from someone who doesn't really dislike Marie in the first place.

Marie is fine, as far as characters goes. I honestly thought I would hate her before playing the P4G. But turns out, I do like her. But I always pick the friends option. I prefer either Naoto (if it wasn't for my man, Kanji, I will pick Naoto all the time) or one of the female team mates I felt the closest to.
I think my reason for just friendzone her is similar to what the RUclipsr, MangaKamen, put in his vids about Persona 5 Royal. About being somewhat forced to pick Marie as a love interest. I did say my reason is similar, because while I do see where he meant, it is subtle enough for me to not realize it till either at the point where one to have to choice a romance option in her social link, or after finishing her dungeon after the Investigation Team have that ski trip.
