- Sorry this vlog is late. I'm having Internet connection issues. I had to drive around to get a signal.
In this vlog, Leon's new boat breaks down not long after picking it up.
This is not my van breakdown vlog that's next one.

I love the ingenuity of makeshift emergency repairs. I once burst a radiator hose in the middle of nowhere in the middle of Spain. It was a 6.2Ltr diesel Chevrolet so no likelihood of spares. I taped up the 1 inch split with gaffa tape, split a pop bottle to get some plastic to reinforce the hose and secured it with jubilee clips. It got us to our next stop. Total delay - 30mins.
Wow! A bit of sideways thinking. I like it.
The upper Thames is pretty remote, so this fix was a blessing. 😂

Hi, that BMC diesel was once an option for diesel-powered Austin and Morris A60 saloons back in the day as taxis. gutless but ok for town work and the odd longer fare. I am no boater but mechanically minded. In Leon's boat he needs "connector blocks" used for electrical work but will join broken cables. safe boating.
Apparently they used taxi engines in boats. It does sound like a taxi. I'm going to need one with my van. Ha ha ha 😂
Well done with the temp repair ! Heard that the ribble link may be opening for a trial run to clear those pre booked!
Assume this is before major repair to the tidal gate , and maybe only for South passage only!
I don't think so because of the breach. I can get down to Preston. They've closed and emptied part of the canal. I'm getting worried about being stuck here till next year.
I can't afford to be lifted out.
Hopefully something will turn up. 🙏
Seems like boating is in the blood, great to see Leon following in your footsteps I guess he will progress to a canal boat one day but depending on river or canal life best for him.
Nice 1st boat bit like a van running them comes at a cost when they break down, I'm shocked you couldn't fix the van and Mr AA saves the day..

Morning Will. Just seen the news about the canal breach at the Hollowforth Aqueduct just north of the M55 (to Blackpool) crossing. Assuming you are north of there, as its at the southern end of the canal, looks like you are cursed to wander the Lancaster for ever, like Captain Jack Sparrow! At least its increased the chance of a crane out I'd say. Typical heh. Looking forward to todays vlog. The viewing numbers shot up on Leon's new boat videos didn't they. Even more than the vlog I starred in.😂😂😂😂. Chin up as they say. 👍👍. Paul.

Afternoon Will. Good to see Leon getting some mileage in on his new boat. Learning about it by having to fix and tweek it. Glad you got the gearbox linkage back together. Looking forward to more adventures. He'll have to do his own filming and send it to you! Again, loved to see the upper Thames, brings back memories. That Oxford Cruisers base near Eynsham below Pinkhill lock was where we first hired a boat in 1974. It was called Carribean Cruisers in those days and they sent us a Christmas card! Regards. Paul.

Welcome to the waterways Leon ,, I have only been on the canals a month now and its a alot slower pace then my last boat ( dive boat out of Dover with twin IVECO's ) .. have lots of fun matey.

Great boat Leon has bought. First cruise is always teeth clenching, getting to know your way round everything. He can gradually do it up and make it a home and it'll be brilliant! Well done Dad Will for your supporting your boy 🤩

I've given him a socket set. Wire strippers and connectors. Various spanners. I sent him 2 solar panels. He's doing OK because I never got any help. Ha ha ha 😂
Bad luck with that cable, but a nice makeshift sollution to it. You got to love your brains with this and besides the jokes you're not dumb.

Wow this reminds me of the little boats that went to Dunkirk as Richard Attenborough & Bernard Lee had gear box problems at least your only on the River Thames , well done with the repair what a brilliant boat Leon !!

Wow so unlucky to have a control cable break, well done with the bush fix 👍👍 all the control cables need to be regular checked, the clamps can loosen and slipped cable can be very dodgy.
Leon has found a good looking boat that with some love and lots of use will do him proud. 👍👍

I think you'll find you will need lots of diy skills because getting anybody out to look at your boat can take weeks.
Get stuck in and give anything a go. Learn to service your boat as well.

Congratulations Leon on your boat. Pretty neat looking. Listen to ol' Dad. Get you some tools and some spare parts, bolts, nuts, screws, etc. lol Will, campers up in Alaska, etc. fight mosquitoes, midges, horse flies, etc. all the time. Need to get you some netting to put around your head and neck, wear long sleeves and gloves till you get out of that mess. We've all been there, done that in camping and boating here in the US. Travel safe guys and good luck with your new adventure/boat Leon. Oh by the way Will: why do they exist? Just to make our life miserable. lol

@@NarrowboatWill I’ve done it Will, picked our brand new boat from North Kilworth, didn’t take any tools because we were just moving it 4 hours down the cut and lost steering, tiller bolt came loose, turning left or right but carrying straight on 🤣🤣👍🏼

I'm sure it was on the Thames. There was one high up in a brick wall and one on a post in the water. I'm sorry I can't remember which vlog. I've done so many.

It was covered in white cobweb type stuff with a funny smell. 😁

Sorry to see that Leon's boat broke down.
That's the only problem with cable operated gears . the cables have a tendency to snap . from time to time .
Always carry a spare..I'm surprised the last owner didn't keep one on the boat...??? Along with a throttle cable..

Anyway will I'm pretty sure that you will sort it out for Leon..
You mentioned about being cold .. perhaps a campervan diesel heater may be the answer for that ..

Edit... OH! I wanted to ask you about rust converters. I've never used them before and wanted to know if you recommend one over any of the others? I've seen Fertan used on other narrowboat channels and have found something called Corroseal but I'm not sure if one is better than another. Thanks.
I use Krust only because I get it from halfords. Boaters rave about fertan so it must good stuff. 👍

Can you say AMERICA? It's a B52 out of Elsworth Air Force Base in South Dakota. If you start to see our B-1's from there, shit is about to hit the fan. But again most of the time the B-1's run from Elsworth do their thing and come back home.

@@NarrowboatWill 8 engines, and it has inline landing gear that swivels to about lets say 10 to 15 degrees to allow it to land sideways in a crosswind. I use to work on infrastructure at Elsworth, From the gates all the way to the no go nuke storage. The B52 is oldest and longest in use bomber in the world. I think they are upgrading it again to get another 20 years out of it. I think they are trying to get a 100 years out of the airframe. It's getting close.
