    Gloria was from Chicago, her home at 820 Grace Street, is still standing. In her - highly enjoyable -autobiography Swanson on Swanson, there's a marvelous picture of her roller skating in front of the Field Museum as a child.

    This movie was the 1st time I ever saw Gloria Swanson. Used to hear my grandma talk about her. To me Ms Swanson's acting in this movie was very powerful. Her emotions came right thru the screen (youtube lol) and hit home. Very glad there was a happy ending. Today's movies with computer animation loud continuous music and short takes cannot compare to these real movies. Kudos to Ms Swanson.

    Gloria Swanson really shined in this, one of her first talkies. Another thing, she was a short woman, only 4'11", but what a screen presence she had. Amazing.

    Mr. Sherman, thanks for uploading this interesting film that really serves as an historical document and is worth every dollar of its restoration. Talkies were new in 1928/29 and every year Broadway was turning out dozens of plays like this one, and the Broadway style of acting is very evident in this 'photoplay' and the whole world could enjoy it. Every line is clearly enunciated and the acting is fairly natural with the actors appearing comfortable in the film medium. This says a lot for Gloria who, as far as I know, didn't have a Broadway career...she made her first movie at the age of 14 in Chicago, and by 17, had appeared in dozens of films and had married Wallace Beery and was very much in Los Angeles. She holds her own with these Broadway people; showing a talent that the camera loves. Thanks again!

    As someone has mentioned, the cinematographic credit is shared by Gregg Toland --and his mentor, George Barnes; those are two of the greatest artists working in that "painting with light" medium. Though the wretched quality of this print makes it hard to fully appreciate their work. And (Poppa) Joe Kennedy bankrolled the whole thing --but that's another story. Thanks for posting this, W. T. “That Certain Woman” (1938) starring Bette Davis. Warner’s needed Swanson’s permission as she owned the rights to the story. Not one of Bette’s better films; it was intended to build her star image. Critics called it ‘corny and dated, complete with infant’.

    Gloria Swanson wasn't to be trifled with. I would hate to have gotten on her bad side! She had such long beautiful black hair, too.

    Wm Thomas Sherman--good one. 89 year old film. How many eras have passed? NIce escape piece. Best Gloria profile is 34:39. Just read a good book on the start of Hollywood, "The Mirage Factory: by Gary Krist.

      It's likely due to this being a bad copy of an old print ( no disrespect to the channel). The original print would have been lighter and less fuzzy.

    Does anyone know why Gloria is billed so low?

    • @AUTISTICLYCAN
      @AUTISTICLYCAN 8 лет назад

      +HOE YEN TAM At this time in her career Gloria Swason's star had faded along with her box office drawing power. The people who get top billing are those who have the most drawing power generally speaking. Gloria Swanson was the reigning diva of the silent movie era and she lost a LOT of her appeal when people finally heard her voice. Lot's of silent film stars lost out when talkies became popular because they did not have voices to match the persona they had built up in the minds of the movie going public. Gloria Swanson could not adjust to the new styles of acting talkies required. Her voice was too staged too static, too wooden. Gloria Swason was unable to infuse her voice with emotion that appeared real. As your star fades you get ever more crappy billing till evenually you hit rock bottom.

      If you notice, all the males are listed on top and the females on bottom. She is the last because, I believe, they didn't want her to get lost in the middle. It is easy to notice the first and last names on a list right away. So the top male and female stars take those places. I have seen it on other old films as well, though i can't remember which titles exactly.

      A lot of stars were purposely billed last. Orson Welles was billed last in "Citizen Kane." Maybe it was a change of pace thing.

      Her career did eventually fade, but not at that time. She lost a fortune with her prevous picture, Queen Kelly,but this was one of her most successful ones. As for her voice, it was one of the best, and she sang too.
