  • Sorcar is a procedural modeling node-based system which utilizes Blender and its Python API to create a visual programming environment for artists and developers.       If you’re into this kind of workflow and procedural/parametric/generative and computational design your should dig into Grasshopper. I’ve been using it for years and it’s simple to port mesh data fro Rhino to Blended. Rhino even runs Cycles so you can port material properties as well. McNeel is working I RhinoInside which allows you to run Rhino within other programs built on a .NET framework. I’m exploring trying to use it to access Grasshopper data directly in Blender.

      Thanks. I started learning Rhino Grasshopper. It's widely supported by tons of plugins, learning material and a very active community besides its already comprehensive integrated functionalities.
      Blender however is open source and tweakable which is a tremendous advantage if you want to use it as a core engine for rapid prototyping a new idea before handing it to professional developers.
      So if Blender is going the same route as grasshopper than I may devote more time to get proficient at it.

    Terrific video! Your comparison with Houdini for some of the node functions and workflow really helps put Sorcar into perspective even for those of us who haven't used Houdini specifically, but have used other procedural tools. Thanks for sharing your knowledge.

    the amazing comments indicate how awesome Houdini really is. Soon when many have understood the workflow from Blender they would want to migrate to feel the true power of Houdini in its glorious majesty.

      I like the route that Blender is heading for unlike Houdini. It's essentially just enough manual stuff that makes things easier and just enough proceduralism with no extremes. IMO that is the way to go in the future.

      @@MeshVoid fair enough. I still believe in the artist having control and not the necessarily the software used. but as a user who isn't fanboy or dedicated to any one software, I can say Houdini can be as easy and can be as challenging depending how you push it. modelling is as easy in Houdini as in any other software and can be as involving. so basically gives you the choice and not a strict path. Im still glad to see other dcc going the Houdini route its great for the ecosystem and like I said earlier, it will make many who didn't want to touch Houdini realise there was no need avoiding it at all

      2.90 will probably have particle nodes and after that there will be modifier nodes coming soon, most of the particle nodes work has already been made and it's only a matter of time before it joins the main branch

    I am always surprised people believe that Maya can't do this kind of stuff, just using ... Nodes ?

    Actually it is pronounced " Sir Car". It has been named after the magician PC Sorcar just like houdini has been named after Harry Houdini.

      Yes it is - this brings Houdini-like proceduralism to Blender - for free - that's higher-level than Sverchok and easy for Blender users to pick up. That's significant.

      @@auboi5014 sure its cool for maybe some basics on proceduralism. In houdini theres whole concept of group selection based on attributes witch goes in vex. Its a good promo for houdini if you want to go procedural.

    In Blender when you are in Edit mode can you create 'Reference Lines' that have their positions/rotations/lengths etc controlled by parameters to constrain the mesh to for accurate modeling?

    Oh wow! First its the Geometry Nodes then i found out about Sverchok which i thought is super powerfull. Now is Sorcar! Is this still being developed? Haven`t seen much about it recently! Is it more similar to GN or Sverchok?

    My only problem is the colors of the node inputs/outputs. I feel like green should have been used for meshes, and grey for single dimensional numbers. It should match with what you expect from the shader nodes imo.

    Blender is already there to compete with Maya and all the other similar software. But Houdini FX is still years ahead of the current state of Blender and this plugin. I guess Houdini deserves to currently be a unique package, since they developed a software so different than the standard.

    Strange things separate the transform node POSITION ROTATION SCALE ... We must connect 3 nodes for 1 simplex thing. in Houdini 1 transform nodes.
    Its possibile to MUTE a node?

      Not yet, bypassing hasn’t been implemented, I guess for now a simple disconnection would do. I also agree to the 3 node connection on the transform node.

      They’re both different, you can use them together. Animation nodes is more focused on motion/animation, while this one is more focused on modelling.

      If I recall correctly (from one of the blender today Q&A's) they are looking into something like this, but nowhere near implementing it.
      They even mentioned sorcar and sverchock, but couldn't yet say where the similarities and differences will lie.

    quick problem: after installing the addon and inserting input node (add cube) nothing appears in my viewport after i click preview on that input node. however, a hazard/warning symbol appears next to the word "object" on the node. also, when i hover over the preview button, the tooltip says undocumented operator. im using blender 2.82.7.

      Hello Takamura,
      For the Inputs menu, I got the same error. Basically, what I learned was that I need to first choose "Create Cube" in order to create the cube first. The "Add Cube" won't work because it is looking to add to a cube that is already created

      Alternatively, once you have the create cube node, you should then be able to link an add cube to that node

    I installed the add on and the workspace is there but when I add a cube or something, nothing shows up and the node turns blue...anyone?

      Hello Nick,
      In Sorcar, under the "Inputs" menu there should be something called "Create Cube" you want to make sure to first use the Create Node to create the Cube. If you are using "Add Cube" it wont work cause it is looking for a object to the add the cube to.

      If you're talking about the fact that he had Houdini, Maya, Max and probably Cinema 4D add well then it is probably because he had educational licenses for all of those (I believe he is a reacher)

      houdini is significantly more complicated, and significantly more powerful in its own right. Wouldn't compare it to blender.

    This is a big deal for blender it can mesh/sculpt model, 2d/3d paint & now create procedural objects in a none destructive way which is probably good for engineering & scientific modeling. should become part of the core so we don't have to hold our breath every time blender gets updated.

    This is toys, and no more than that. "modelling" in Houdini is a pain, thats why I use blender for that

    Even though this is pretty nice, its typical Blender - stealing from ever they can just to say - hey, we have that too, so its better than everyone else since, you know - its free.

    blender can do this without this addon

      but with addon its non destructive way. so you can change it any time without copying mid results or reverting with ctrl+z
