Yes, the Vortec 4.3L V6 is a very torquey engine, as it is a GM 5.7L V8 with two cylinders removed. The reason it accelerates slowly is because the GM engineers installed an airflow restrictor under the throttle blade to limit torque off idle, to solve the wheel spin problem on wet or snowy pavement. Remove that restrictor and you will most likely spin the tires right off idle, even on dry pavement. I can't say the same for the TBI version of the 4.3L V6.
J N this is my truck in the video and I’ve already checked for the throttle blade restrictor on the TBI and there isn’t one. It will spin off the line on dry pavement though 😂

Hi Zach As somebody who owns a 2000 s10 with the 4 cylinder with the normal cab The bed is perfect for hauling engine parts and I get 30 mpg with an empty bed It’s a fine little truck for going around town and small loads But the 4 cylinder engine was poorly designed, and often develop low oil pressure (mine started knocking around 95k) And even post rebuild, these engines just don’t hold up over time Parts are cheap But if you get one of these trucks With the 2200 engine Be ready to source for another 2200, or throw in the v6 Great review as always!
K I own a 2001 with 230 000 miles and I haven’t heard knock out of it. If you have had it since new you must have neglected it and if you bought it used someone else neglected it. All it takes to ruin an engine is to be late on a service or oil change
The S10 is a light duty truck. It's not for towing cars... At all. Get a Silverado if you want to tow cars lol. Also, 4x4 is only available with the 4.3 v6... So a 4 cyl would be good for someone who wants good gas mileage and doesn't care about only having rwd or hauling much.
I have a lead on a 95 for 1200 it has camper pretty low miles 75000.I just need around town vehicle do you think it is a good bargain ?? I am poor so I need to make it last and I live in Montana I'm afraid the 2 wheel drive won't be good in winter
Have a 1995 S10 2.2 auto , got 72,000 miles and it blew a head gasket for the 2nd time , done with it, now it's getting a 5.3 swap, transmission and rear end. Would not recommend that 2.2 to my worst enemy.
Great review! I am thinking of buying on of these for a winter driver and use it to gather materials for working on my house. P.S. the jump seats were for kids. Totally useless.

The only thing you may want to do if it's not done yet is change the low intake manifold gaskets if you get one with the 4.3. They are known to blow. other than that, they are great trucks
I have the 96 GMC Sonoma SLS ext. Cab highrider edition V-6 and a 4 door 02 GMC Sonoma SLS V-6 great little trucks . Dropping a tranny is no fun 2 bolts are impossible to get you have to drill two holes in your floor board .
You should review a 98 to 04, S10 next. It was the last S10's before they moved on to the Colorado's. The final changes took place in 1998. You have your modern front with the headlights cars use today, so you can add Silverstar Ultra headlights, the final interior design changes took place in 1998 as well. No more ugly 80's handles. The glove box was changed and has a passanger air bag. The rear bumper was changed to a more sleak look. Updated emission systems came in around the second half of 2000 for the vin 5. The jump seats stayed the same. Also, I have a 2001 Chevy S10 with the inline 4, its an automatic. The gas mileage to that truck is not great, in fact I have a feeling the V6 gets better gas mileage, because that little 2.2L has to move a lot of its own weight, so the 6 would do it more efficiently, I wish mine had a 6. My father had the Sonoma (same truck) year 2000 with a manual, that got descent gas mileage, the automatic doesn't. Also the 4 cylinder cant get out of its own way when starting out from a red light, the 6 moves better, we had a 96' SS that really moved. Once the 4 gets going its fine, it burns a lot of fuel to get going. As far as the sound system. My Truck had a Delco with a Cassette. The dash on that truck comes out easily. I upgraded to the Delco for that truck with the CD player, got it at the junkyard for 10 or 15 bucks. That radio has a plug in the back for a separate cassette player commonly found in the blazer. I got one from the junkyard for 10 bucks, plugged it into my stock delco radio, it gives me cd and cassette and with the cassette I can use a cassette adapter and hook an MP3 player or my phone into the sound system, their by giving me modern music playing. The stock Delco radio sounds great in that truck and it looks right with the interior, vs sticking some ugly afternarket radio in. So for 25 bucks I have a fully modern good sounding stock sound sytem in my truck and can play whatever I want. The cassette is down near the floor in the center console. It a fits in nicely. These are great trucks. However I believe a 6 cylinder manual would probably get the best gas mileage of all of them or be very close with the 4 clylinder manual. The 4 cylinder automatic sucks on gas, from personal experience and what others have also said. If your gonna tow, get the 6. Out of all the S10's that were built I most commonly see the 98 and up the most still, all the others are getting older and are slowly dieing off.
I clicked this because i had 4 cylinder 2wd 1999 sonoma with 7 foot bed i loved that truck was white, really miss it ,got stolen year so ago ,really sucked because it was a clean truck garage kept, i worked gard for it, only to have it stolen by some low life
That truck usually has a 3rd door behind the driver side with a small latch inside the 3rd door it’s easy to miss a lot of people don’t even see them lol
I looked at buying a S10 extended cab 4x4 back in like 1995 as they were really popular at the time. I remember it was expensive-like $25K at the time which is like $44K today. They were way overpriced. I also remember the interior looked cheap with big plastic buttons. I'm glad I passed on buying one. I went with Ford and never looked back.
cej23 I have a set of 32x11.50r15 mud terrain extreme traction radial tires on Amazon. As he said my truck is on stock suspension. Rear clears fine but slightly rubs on stock exhaust. Front tires rub on any decent bump. I would recommend to do a body lift and torsion keys with rear shackles. Front tires also rub on sway bar and frame at full lock.
