PERFECT length for packability for those of us who don’t want to carry trekking poles or non-adjustable poles. Exactly what I was hoping you’d produce.
Ordered these with the X-Mid 1P, but I will be bringing them with me as well as my trekking poles...because, sometimes you want to pitch your tent, leave it up, and go do some heavy hiking in places nearby, so at this light weight, why would you not bring both!
yes wait a second. But isn t it easy possible to take the poles out and then to put them in again after the hike? It is a serious question because i was also in rabbit hole because of that subject. But in the end i don t know if it is such a big hassle to take the poles out and the to put them in again 💁🏻♂️ i am still waiting for my xmid to arrive with Fedex.
They look great, Have you tested these for winter use? Does the clip freeze up or is it easy to clear of ice? It would be awesome in future if one end had a thread for a snow basket, I know most people camping in winter have ski poles, but if you set up base camp, you need the poles for skiing 🙈⛷️
The clip is a 'flick lock' style which are widely used on winter poles. I'm sure it could freeze up if you got it wet enough, but it should normally work. A basket attachment would be cool. I'm hesitant to add grams to the poles for this fairly uncommon use case, but it would be handy sometimes. I think there are alternatives though, such as finding something that can act as a 'boot' for the pole, or making a disc that it sits on.
Bummer! Just got the X Mid Pro 2 and went to buy these, but they won't be back in stock until spring next year. If anyone wants to sell theirs or finds some for sale elsewhere, I'd love to snag them!:)
Dan, just got your X mid 2 P in the mail last night. Will be getting your Kakwa 55 in the coming months. Also, ordered your ground sheet last night. Could you do a complete set up with ground sheet, attaching the inner and with new version 2 for us newbies? I'm 54 and just experienced the hiking bug! Thanks
A new pitching video? Yeah I'm planning to do one as soon as the snow melts here (~April). We do have a pitching video now, but the new one will show more on how to pitch it for stormy weather, how to troubleshoot issues, add groundsheet etc.
For those of us who have fixed-length poles (110cm) and don't want to buy nor carry more gear, what's the average ideal pole length for a good pitch on the X-Mid 2?
About 125 cm. We say 122 cm but that is a bit lower pitch (which I prefer). If you're doing fixed length, I would do about 125 cm and then angle them if they're a bit too long.
I have just received my Dursten X-Mid Pro, however it is in a different country from where I’m currently located🤔🤪. Intrigued by the pole but it’s external volume while folded looks to be higher than a non-adjustable pole. I guess you can’t have everything. I love the thought and energy you’re putting into this equipment Dan. Great to have some 🇨🇦 designs on the market.
These are actually lower volume than a non-adjustable pole because non-adjustable poles can’t telescope. So here one section fits inside of another one to basically have 4 sections when packed whereas an adjustable pole is five sections when packed. There are some super skinny poles that would be lower volume but they are very flexible and not suitable for use in rugged conditions.
Maybe one day, but not in the near future. You could buy two and add sections from one to the other to create a longer pole. You'd just need to redo the inner shock cord.
That’s a fantastic idea! I too was hoping that you’d eventually make a longer version for use with the teepee like tarp tents (as the pole at the heights needed for those are just far too heavy) but your idea to combine two of these may just solve that for me. I just wish there was a how-to video but I’m sure once I get the poles in my hands I’ll figure it out 😅 probably.
@@angelaorr3992 You can lift off the gap on the blunt end and untie the shockcord to disassemble the pole. If you have two poles, you can add in a few more sections and run a longer piece of shockcord through and then re-tie that.
I'm not sure I quite understand. There are two tips where either one can be put up and the other goes down inside the adjuster. It locks at the adjuster.
Not really. You'd have to buy two and harvest an extra section from the second one to add to the first. It can be done - it would just be a bit of hassle to redo the shockcord.
Hey Dan, hoping you can help out. Is there a tip to folding the poles back? I got a set of them however, stretching the elastic to fold them back up seems like I will break it... Not sure if there's a truck to it or I'm just being too delicate.
The elastics are pretty tight on our first run (we are going to make them a bit longer for the next batch) but they should still work fine and do loosen up a bit with some use. It is a bit easier if you do the middle fold last. That way it can pull slack from both sides, whereas if you fold from one end to the other then the friction at each bend can mean the last fold is extra tight.
@@durstongear awesome, thanks for the tip! The middle fold last seems to help a bit. I knew they were going to be light but these weight nothing, great job!
@@durstongear thanks a lot! may i directly ask you another question? My biggest concern is that on rocky ground on higher altitude i won t be able to set the tent up 😀 Will it work out? I have orderer the tent: does it come with tent stakes and enough guylines?
@@Pasequale100 Most of our tents come with stakes. A few models have it optional, so it depends what you select. They also come with peak guylines, but these should rarely be needed. On rocky ground, stakes will usually work but if it is really rock you can tie to rocks, like this: ruclips.net/video/SNA-QvgLqVw/видео.html
@@durstongear i have choosen the x mid 1 solid at Kaviso. Does this model come with pegs? Thanks for your tips! Problem is perhaps if there are only rocks like on 3000m altitude. I will see ;) Ah are there also other guyout points besides the peak guyoutpoints? If yes, would you recommend me to buy additional Ironwire from Kaviso? Are these only in strong winds needed, not in soft wind or to stabilize the pitch?
@@Pasequale100 Yeah that'll come with pegs. You only need to stake the 4 corners. Most people stake the doors too. Then you have 4 more optional stake points around the bottom (near the middle of each side), plus optional peak guylines (included) and optional side panel guylines (need to add yourself). I recommend learning how to pitch it well (watch our pitching guide and practice) and then you shouldn't need much extra stakes or lines.
They pack to the same short length as the tent so you could store them inside your pack sideways like the tent but also you could put them in a side pocket outside.
Looking to buy a pair of these Will these sink into soft mud ground where there has been heavy rain fall? They look quite thin or do they have an option for a wider base for the end that would be in contact with the ground?

Wow. At that weight, these features are amazing!
Perfect. I just ordered the X-Mid1 with the z-flick poles since I don't use trekking poles.
I’ve been waiting for you to give some intelligent design to poles for we non trekking pole people. They look great.

Brilliant design- perfect companion to the Xmid (edit: any "trekking pole tent") for kayak/canoe/bikepacking. Thank you
These are great and so well thought out. Now I can bring my Durston tent on my kayaking trips. Thank you.

I have ordered a pair last night 🙂 though I have yet to get an X-mid 2p😔. Hope to be lucky on the upcoming X-mid sale😉.
Nobel prize for you in the future? If not, maybe just move to the US and run for President? 😉 I love your innovations!
Awesome poles. Anyone come up with a way of not losing the little velcro band that holds them together?
Maybe if you wrap it/close it around the pole then it won't slide off?
@@durstongear I tried that. Maybe a spot of glue...
