Glad to see you back in the game. That was a cool video. Having battled Dino's in the past couple of years, I can attest to the old advice being incorrect. I used to have them multiple times a couple years back, and believe it was due to over filtration in combination with low nutrients. Once I increased nutrients and added UV, the problem went away in a week or two (blowing off rocks w/powerheads and fizzing the tank too). Worked every time. Can't wait to see your new build!

Thanks for checking it out and the words of encouragement. I would be lying if I wasn't nervous about getting dinos again with the new build. I plan to get some copepods, and a few other things to seed the tank/biome before I run the lights too consistently. Maybe that will help...
Enjoyed this video, I think all us reefers can relate to you're journey. I've been in the hobby for 24 years now and kept tropical before that. I had dino's a few times over the last few years due to tank moves and setting up with dry rock, my nutrients bottomed out too at one point but I've got rid of the dinos pretty easily each time, for belt and braces maybe invest in a microscope so if you do get dino's you can identify the strain ASAP and implement a corrective remedy. Good luck with you're new aquarium. Hope in a few years you have a thriving reef.
Good call. I've read recently how important it is to identify the dino strain you have as each suggested remedy is strain-specific. Will definitely invest in a microscope. The kind I got in my last tank was (I believe) a toxic version as it negatively impacted my coral health and fish. I've gotten dinos before that didn't cause negative side effects other than look ugly...those were easily resolved with a 3-4 day black out. Seems the last few years the strains are more stubborn!
@@zburnreefing well honestly having a microscope opens up a whole new world in you're reef. So even of you never get dinos it's such a fun thing to do. I have 4 small children and there is always new things for them and me! to see and learn about at the micro level. I find children have very little interest in waiting a year or 2 for a sps to grow out. 🤣
I went and picked up a breeding mesh box that day, but once I returned home the fry were all gone. I am assuming they were eaten by the other fish…i think you have to separate them out pretty quickly to prevent this, but I am no means an expert. The whole breeding thing caught me off guard! Fish must have been happy 😃
Just Curious what did you dose from the past to the latest tank/feed hahah, currently i am using T5 and Led's but can't seem to grow/colour the sps up like yourself
Hi Wilmer! I didn’t dose anything special. Just two part to maintain alk and calcium and feed the fish well. During times of greatest growth I was doing weekly 10% water changes. On occasion I would feed the corals phyto and reef roids. I can’t say if that did much. A good fish load, stability, and keeping hands out of the tank I believe is what helped me get good growth.

Cichlids we’re one of my favorites too, but the reef is where it’s at.
100% Agree! I have to be careful or I’ll find myself neglecting my fish too much as the corals end up getting all my attention.

metal halides is coming back, i don't think they will stop making the bulbs for a long time.
I sure hope they don’t stop making the bulbs…I just stocked up on Radiums to get me by a few years!
