    For people who ask about the story behind the dance, Tanoura isn't just for fun, its a religious Sofi dance, a philosophy, every move and each gesture refering to something, The circles and spinning refering to infinity, the round plates is the planets and stars, rising hand refer to hope. Sofi using dance, music and other forms of art to free their soul from the materialistic world and connect it with the universe.

      So it's like the Hawaiian hula, except the hula is more on a terrestrial scale, mirroring ocean waves and the sway of flowers in the breeze, while tanoura imitates the dance of the heavenly bodies, stars, planets and the like, as if all Creation is dancing in praise of its Maker

    I’m so impressed and in awe of this man spinning through half this video and not falling down after all that. My husbands niece is dating a guy from Egypt, they have invited us to visit them in England where she lives, then to Egypt, we just might do that someday soon.

      The skirt is actually weighted at the ends/circumference on the inside in order to stop the dancers from falling and keep them in the center, I can tell you from experience it does a LOT to help keep your balance, the traditional Sufi ones for religious meditative whirling aren't weighed, but the Egyptian one for the performative Tanoura dance, in this video, are

    This is an Egyptian adaptation of whirling dervishes of Anatolia, originated in 1200s in Konya as a religious ceremony by Rumi himself. It is still a respectful, religious event in Turkey, where in Egypt it has converted to a colorful folk dance.

      Yes, we all know it’s just him spinning but if you notice while he was spinning, he’s telling a story, or holding things for the people to see. He’s not just spinning for fun.

      @ahmedkhtr 2 года назад +1

      @@JMarieCAlove yes, but its not a story, its a philosophy. Tanoura is a form of Sufi dance. Its like a prayer for them.
