      tia cooper People also use to tell me that I am so wise. But I think the reason for this wisdom is probably knowledge and thinking. I am spending a lot of time by thinking about certain ideas or topics or stories. I reflect a lot of my life. And I also google and read a lot of thinks on the internet. For instance, there was a time in ny youth where I was informing myself a lot about introversion. I have read a whole book about it and I was also thinking about it bc I am an introvert. And I watch many youtube videos. But I think a lot..A LOT. But I am sure that you are also really wise. I hope you have a nice day.💕

      Wisedom comes from experience. This is someone who has gone through stuff in her life (and is still going through stuff). She has had to seek help and knowledge... "therapy", where (at least in my case) you gain a million "Ah Ha!" moments where you learn some deep introspective things about life, truth, and self.

      @kiararocktheworld8725 7 лет назад +4

      I find myself in this position a lot and there are many different things I tried that could work for you.
      One is writing up as many lyrics as you can come up with that could highlight or fit that line. You can write as much as you want and when you're done, ignore the original line and match them up together to what could fit in a melody or a topic. When I first tried this I ended up completely forgetting about the first line and lead the song into a whole other direction. It works and is also good for testing out different things.
      You could also keep a journal or folder to write all those lyrics down. If something ever comes to you, write it down. When you come back to it you may also find a lyric that fits what you're currently writing. If not that, you could also piece them together.
      I wrote one song with a lyric like that and I solved it by finishing the whole entire song, whether it lived up to the lyric or not. If you play it several times, you can see if it did end up fitting or some lyrics were definitely shaky and fix them accordingly.
      Hope this helps!

      there's nothing you can do about it, so don't worry about it. it's easier said than done but since you really can't do anything about it, just don't let it bother you.

    • @BryonyAnneBelle
      @BryonyAnneBelle 7 лет назад +7

      Honestly, I have learnt to find that freeing, rather than something that makes me anxious. I would also say that it's inaccurate to say that everything is pointless, rather that the purpose of it is simply that which you apply to it in the now, rather than some over-arching purpose. As in, it does matter what you do, and it matters how you feel, and it matters how others' feel. Everything has an affect, and that matters, no matter how small.

    Hey Tessa,
    I really enjoyed this video. Do you ever feel like your goal of creating is to make something other people will like, and not just to enjoy the creative process? If so, what are some things you do to help prevent this? "A great way to never write anything is to enter into creativity with fear." Is a quote from this video that I can really relate to. I am not a song writer but I find fear stopping me from doing other creative things like painting. Thank you for making videos and for being honest:)

      Erin Flanagan hey I'm not sure I can offer much advice myself but I've been in a similar situation with former best friends, now toxic friends
      like I said I don't know if I can offer much advice on how to cut yourself off from/distance yourself from them 'cause I don't know your situation but
      Just know it feels great without toxic people in your life. Not at first- becoming distant from anyone you were close with at one point is difficult/has an affect on you in one way or another- but in the long run it feels much better without that in your life.
      Try talking to and hanging out with other people. Find other people to focus on yknow? People that care about you and are good for you. That helped me distance myself from toxic friends a lot.
      Hope this maybe helped!

    • @crowstrive1426
      @crowstrive1426 7 лет назад +4

      Also, forgot to add, try openly communicating
      This isn't always something you can do in a toxic friendship, it depends on your situation, but if you can then being open can be helpful in some cases. Maybe not too much in toxic friendships now that I think about it...
      Well, like I said I don't know your situation so getting yourself out of that friendship asap might be the better course of action if it's super toxic
      best of luck, toxic friendships are gross n you don't need that crap in your life

    Only two minutes in and I've shouted "YES SOMEONE SAID IT" three times already. It took me a while to get over the whole "I need to be ORIGINAL, I need to be ME, but who AM I" madness. When I started consuming more art, I was able to MAKE more art. I think that's true with anything, but especially music. Do not feel guilty for sounding like something else, friends. I've gotten to a comfortable place where I can freely make music and know it will be original to me- not because of something I'm actively DOING, but simply by the fact that whatever I make WILL inherently HAVE to have my footprint on it.

    Part of me is so so jealous that you started songwriting as an adult, and so got to think rationally about how to get better at it. I started as a middle schooler, and it was the way I processed my depression and grief. I'm so grateful that that was a healthy tool I found to get through the worst, most confusing years of my life, but it also became so attached to depression because of that, y'know? And so I really felt like I had to be feeling things really strongly and writing purely from emotion and passion (so it had to come out ALL AT ONCE or it was worthless) -- but that it also had to be an objectively good song. It was too much pressure to put on something that should be healthy work. Being creative for a living is confusing. I'm so grateful for your perspective on these things, it's helped me untangle some of the hangups I have about creating.

    Thank you Tessa! We will all die, and we will be forgotten. XD Question: What was the first lyric you wrote that made it to one of your final cut songs?

    Question: How to get your music to a wider audience?

    No offence, Tessa but don't you think sometimes you get too preachy and try too hard to be a good person. This is not a very nice thing to say. I'm so sorry if I hurt your feelings.

      No offense taken! Yes I try VERY hard to be a good person and I totally get why someone would think I am pretentious (and maybe I am?), but like I said in the video about entering into creativity with fear, I also don't want to fall into the trap of sharing my feelings or opinions with the fear of "being too preachy" or "being too pretentious". Ultimately I'm just answering questions to the best of my ability. I don't see a good reason to overthink my presentation.

    A few questions! A. How does one spark creativity. Sometimes I feel this deep longing for creativity in my chest and I can't express it, any ideas on how to stop this?
    B. Makeup brands/where you shop in general because I NEED YOUR AESTHETIC
    C. I need recommendations! Any favorite books/movies/musicals/podcasts/albums/etc.?

    Thank you for the always excellent advice, it's great for all art forms, not just song writing. I've been stumped for awhile and this helped a lot.

    Tessa thank you so much for making this video. It means the world to me. As a beginner singer/songwriter this really helps sort of encourage me to keep going. Thank you thank you thank you

    I'm not a songwriter, but I am a screenwriter/filmmaker. It's always interesting to me how much creative fields overlap - everything you said I was able to modify into my own creativity, and it was very useful.

    A lot of good advice. Is there a genre of music you wouldn't want to experiment in, e.g. heavy metal etc. ???

    Very good video! A lot of these points I have made myself in the past. A few I haven't really thought about. The phrasing of lyrics to match the way the words are naturally spoken is really smart. That's something I've never consciously thought about. And I must heavily echo the writing part. As far as singer/songwriter projects go, I've got endless instrumentals and a handful of lyrics done. Yet, I have not released any songs that are not a cover, a remix, or an instrumental. It takes time. It also takes focus and motivation. Things that I have been lacking but am slowing attaining more of.

    I'm late watching this video b/c I graduate this week and I have been all over the place mentally and emotionally. Anyway, I really enjoyed this video and I found this advice to be useful. When writing songs, I always hesitate writing certain things because I like guarding how I really think and feel about certain subjects. I think that's because I like control and once what I truly think is out there I can't control how others will react to how I feel... But like you said- one day I'll be dead and those people that I am worried about will be dead and nobody will remember any of us. Anyway, I have a question: How do you approach writing songs that you know will be hard to share?

    Dat wisdom tho. The 1/10th thing is so good and also the speaking-singing thing is super interesting and is a characteristic I like about your music but could never have put my finger on! All the best with keeping the creative tap on:)

    i also thought about this. There are only so many chords in music. It's amazing how music works. Also i like to point out that every voice is different. EVERY. SINGLE. ONE. :) like urs is so special and beautiful!

    8:30 "Saass!".
    Is that what you said?? I swear that is the same sound we used to make as kids when something would go wrong or a sudden letdown or negative turn in storytelling would happen.
    And we were Mexican kids speaking Spanish!
    ¿Pero como puede ser?

    How do you collect your thoughts if they ever feel scattered and disorganised? This can relate to social interactions, videos, anything? Even (especially?) songs

    I completely agree. Going to art school and writing my own music really caused me to struggle with the idea that nothing is really "original" and that is ok. Art is supposed to be fueled and inspired by like and other artists. The is one of the most beautiful things about it. Everything, in a sense is a collaboration. This video perfectly puts that idea into words as always.
    I am really curious how other song writers deal with not so much sounding the same as a song by another artist, but after the fact realizing you have basically written the same song you have previously written but with different words? I struggle with this A LOT. Advice appreciated!!!!

    As someone who's not at all a musician, I want to also share how helpful your words are for me about all art (and even things that don't feel like art). Like, I'm in the process of writing my personal statements for grad school and it's so hard to feel unique or to create a nice progression of thoughts and tones, etc. And what you're sharing is exactly what I keep telling myself - write something, write more than you need to and you can go back and revise and perfect. So thank you, as always, for sharing your insight in such a lovely and eloquent way. I'm in love with your way with words. :)
