Wonderful vid of Union Street tunnel GREENOCK last used in 1959, the huge square shaft is in a back garden in Newton Street. The line went to Princes Pier.
I walked this all the way back in 1970, I was 16. Pretty scary for me back then! The station and yard at the end of the tunnel was part of Prince's Pier Ocean terminal which was a major port for Scots emigrants to Canada. The station was demolished and the yard made way for an international Container Terminal and now occasional obscenely large cruise ships.
Piece of history on the Greenock Princes Pierline. The line was used heavily during the Second World War,by thousands of Canadian, and American Troops. These men were being brought to the Uk over the Atlantic by ships such as the Queen Mary and Elizabeth and other liners. Glasgow at the time had a regular sevice to the States and Canada,as well as Australia,New Zealand,India and South Africa. Part of the line which I travelled by train as a child is now a cycle track which I also used regularly in the 90s/2000s. I once met a group of pensioners back in the early noughties who remembered the troops going through when they were kids. Apparently the kids used to stand under road bridges and on station platforms and the young soldiers would throw sweets and chocolate to them. The remains of this line are well worth a visit,it's gradients tunnels and civil engineering through Greenock and Port Glasgow are AWESOME. Finally I once met an American Vet who by this time was a grandfather with his extended famiy looking for the place he landed on the river.I was able to tell him and he told me that many ef those young men never saw America or Canada again. Very Sad.
This tunnel has fascinated me since I was a kid - runs right through the middle of my home town! Brilliant video, thanks for sharing! Great to see what its like inside
RCbeastly I thought it was Waterloo tunnel(or should I say Victoria tunnel to be correct) at Edge Hill in Liverpool at first but there are no gates at the entrance.Good video though.
What a dynamic video, I really enjoyed it, saved me the trouble of having to go down there. And that soundtrack rocked, sounded like something off the soundtrack from the 1981 movie, "Nighthawks". Keep up the good work.
A switch inside the one end of that tunnel is pretty unique. And I have to assume that air shaft was there to help get rid of smoke in the steam days. Any way you can get air to loco's of any type is a good thing in a tunnel. Also it's good you're not like some idiots on here out playing on "live track" like it's their private playground. It's all dangerous so be careful. Good video!
There used to be a tunnel like this under part of Brighton, on the old Kemp Town branch. We discovered it during a school holiday in the 70s, and like this, it curved, so when you were in the middle, you couldn't see any light at all. the old station was still there, all overgrown, and at the far end of the tunnel, you came out onto a socking great viaduct that curved across the Lewes Road end of Brighton. It was brilliant, but its all gone now, of course
Yes indeed! I lived close to it in the mid-70s (after it closed) and explored it throughout before it was sealed off. It was used during WW2 as an air-raid shelter for stabling electric trains and the stop markers were still in position inside the tunnel.
Excellent vid, reminds me of walking through old Crystal Palace high up to the capped end before they built on it, the portal is still there I believe but heavily barricaded nowadays. As for this one, looking at the very recent electrical boxes etc, is this a disued but route kept for future use like Weymouth Quay and Chatham Naval Docks lines are? The track itself, pointing on the doubling, ballasting etc looks in very good condition
I presume that this video takes place in the UK? Seems like a tunnel suited for a steam railway, then later modified for diesel locomotives. Abandoned for, let's say 20 to no more than 50 years. Possibly met its maker by way of the Beeching Axe. The wiring is deteriorated while the tunnel itself seems to be in fair to rough condition. It's rails are another story, they can take one to two goods trains traveling at a decent speed. By the looks of it mate, you found yourself a nice tunnel. Good work.
The tunnel is a double wide, with a single set of tracks. It either had two sets or was intended to have two sets, the tracks there now look recent cause of the spring design holding down the rails, i.e no spikes. The water leakage and evidence of attempts to reline the tunnels is probable what condemned the tunnel. Its usual for most brickwork tunnels, too much saturation by water and the whole thing will come down by vibrations from the train. Love that open air shaft, gonna try to incorporate that into my train layout somehow.
MidnightVisions I would say no to both. The tracks are in the middle of the tunnel, which means it was done intentionally. Single tracks is what it was meant to be
@@Ronin.Samurai the track doesn't for the period of the tunnel and it is a double wide, why excavate a double wide for a single track? It was built as a double and the single track relayed later (not unusual) plus it clearly opens into double width with the point at one end.
Should of been around in the sixties mate, they were all over the gaff, old factorys gasworks and docks as well.We kids had a great time. Old works stood for years in those days,no one knocked them down till they got money. Great video! I like how mysterious abandoned railway tunnels look and the music just gives it that extra eerie feeling. Can you please tell me the name of the song?
Has anyone visited an abandoned old tunnel near Narni (center of italy)? Percorso pedonale Ex Ferrovia Roma - Ancona I stumbled upon it once with some friends in the middle of the forest. You could not see the end and it was pitch black full of debris and the whole wall/ceiling was covered in thick spider webs with thousands of spiders. We walked for several minutes into it until we found the other end of the tunnel. Exciting, want to go there again.
If I had the balls to do what you did, I would definitely take a tailors dummy with me in a hooded shroud and leave it stood in the middle for the next person to come across with their flashlight :-)

I do wonder if there is anything like that or abandoned station along the disused lines between uckfield and lewes and between east Grinstead and Heyward heath line as well they were put out of service around 1970 or 80s can't remember if it's uckfield or east Grinstead where you see where the live track stops and when the disused one starts.
It's Uckfield. The original track bed has been shifted on the live side, but still remains on the dead side. They have demolished the original station and moved it the other side of the main road to eliminate the level crossing.... Hope this helps.
@@@iguardian1 A few random lines therefrom..... Out of sequence, and out of context... "One, foggy night, I was sittin' 'ere, watchin' the patterns in the fire, then I looked out, toward the red light....." "The tunnel collision is the worst to be feared......" "The ventilating shafts act like furnace flues......." "It's the shape of the tunnel you see, Sir....." "True, Sir, they brought 'er in, and they laid 'er down, right on this floor between us......" "See the books, Sir? I've been teaching myself the algebra". "You are a scholar then?". "Indeed sir, that I am not...." "When you leave tonight, don't call out...... And when you return tomorrow, don't call out....." "What did you say to him?...." "I waved my arm, like this, and shouted, "For God's sake, clear the way"....." The BBC representation is based entirely upon the 1866 short story by Charles Dickens; "The Signal-Man". Very spooky for a youngster watching in black and white, in the dim and distant 1976. It was part of a series entitled "Ghost Stories For Christmas". The series, or just "The Signalman", is still available on DVD.
If it is indeed The Princes Pier Line it Was,it also had a signal box and large goods yard on a steep gradient in a deep cutting as you exited the last tunnel in Greenock going towards Port Glasgow this was called Mearns St and can be found on the Bluebell Railways Archive on the web if its still available.
There is a tunnel like this, albeit on a smaller scale near my home town of Perth, Western Australia. It was built in 1895, as the cornerstone at the arch of each entrance proudly proclaims. It's a little short of a quarter mile long, and was shut down in 1945. Why? Because some bright spark forgot to incorporate proper ventilation, and this had caused a series of accidents. Today, this tunnel is open to tourists, as the rail line that used to go through it has long since been removed. Anyone that studies the paranormal will note the presence of spirits there. Paranormal investigators have noted that it is somewhat active in there. I've even managed to catch an image myself on my basic digital camera. In 1942, there was one accident that resulted in the death of one train driver. This case is well documented, but I suspect there were more accidents not well known about. It is the image I captured, which leads me to believe the tunnel hasn't surrendered all of its secrets.
After the crash in 1942, the cutting that runs northside of the tunnel was put in so that trains going up the hill bypassed the tunnel and trains coming down the hill went through the tunnel. The line and tunnel remained open till 1966 when it was replaced by the Avon Valley line. It is a great tunnel, best viewed at night. :) The crash was caused by the trains wheels slipping on the climb out of Swan View, the drivers and fireman passed out from the fumes and it rolled back into the emergency run off line at Swan View Station and crashed there.
It is Gothic style. When it was first built the roof was not meant be lined the way it is. The troubles was that rocks kept falling down. They did consider making it a cutting but then decided to line the roof instead which was quicker and cheaper. Did you see the storage compartment built into the wall on the RHS as you head up through the tunnel from S.V? It is next to one of the alcoves and has steel doors.
I like the music. At first I thought Tangerine Dream but then Jean Michelle Jarre, but now not sure. are you going to tel us? I work on the railways and would love a walk down here, (in full PPE of course!)
I actually live (East end of Glasgow) right next to an abandoned railway tunnel its travels underneath my house i only ever walked through it twice, it go's on for miles the tunnels they are amazing to walk through although pitch black and quite scary
Glasgow oldie here. That line once went all the way to Dalmuir and part of it is now the Central Low Level Line. It once had connections to Bishopbriggs,Maryhill, and Kelvinside as well as numerous other places around Glasgow. They even electrified the signaling, then chucked it into the tunnels when they shut the line around five years later. The sixties was the time to be in scrap in Glasgow, the taxpayer was paying !
At the minute 2:42, where is that tunnel located? We are desperately looking for a tunnel location to film a movie scene. We will appreciate your info on this. Thanks so much in advance.

If you have a bike, you can cycle from Paisley Canal station along much of the route with fabulous views of the Clyde from Kilmacolm on.Failing that you can see the tunnels and deep cuttings from the old Walkers Sugar Refinery up the hill in Greenock West.
Are you from around the Livingston area? It's just that you've done a number of videos from there so I was quite curious. Also, about how old are you, if you don't mind me asking? Just wondering if we'd have gone to school around the same time.
Still one of my fav videos, about to make my first abandoned railway tunnel video tomorrow, looking at what some consider to be the world's first railway tunnel :o), already pictures up on my facebook group :o)

No word on where this is. Looks like it was shut down 60 or more years ago. Does not look like American tracks of that time period. My guess puts it in Europe and possibly England or Germany.
Yeah very nice video ty.Good fence at the entrance for impailing your enemies if you have any lol!:)I Suppose thats just like an old shail mining railway or something is it?
I think that stretch is stabilized thanks to Ranger activities, but look out for Fourth Reich recon patrols, they've been increasing their activity lately, they're up to something
Stand still laddy. If you don't eat your meat, you can't have any pudding. How can you have any pudding if you don't eat your meat? (Saw The Wall live at Earls Court in 1980!)
Why not build a loop tunnel in a subway between stations and then have the subway train run in a loop for three hours so the passengers are fooled into thinking that they are riding inside one long-ass fucking tunnel and how can that be where there is only half a mile between stations? What they won't realize is the train is running in circles. Another thing is to have a track loop back to the same station the train just departed so the passengers really have their heads fucked with as the subway stops at the same station twice in a row. People should buy my "Impact" a James Grider novel on Amazon and linked in my videos.
If your into disused rail tunnels, then try the STANDEDGE TUNNEL Diggle-Marsden,4 bores,Canal,! live tunnel for trains and two disused straight as an arrow 4 miled with numerous cross headings,,,a great day out under the Pennines,(see my Facebook profile)there i have placed pictures that were of course taken from another person, was there my self many years ago,,,good luck,,Fina
Is it not to our eternal shame that we suffocate all our roads and towns with cars when we have such wonderful infrastructure which could be made available for such a small outlay? So many of our 'leaders' follow party dogma instead of making the most of what we have!
Michael C. There are tunnels like this all over the UK. In the 1960's thousands of miles of branch lines were closed in the name or modernisation of the railways. Sadly, many of the routes have now been built over in places so can never be reopened. Many have become tourist trails and cycle routes though, Including some tunnel sections, so they can still be explored.
If it were being used, you would notice the sheen on the top of the rails. Any well-used rail track will have the tops of the rails polished to a gleaming finish simply by the amount of traffic that passes over it every day. From pure "chrome" finish, through to rusted like this, and every variation in between. This line looks like it hasn't been used for at least twenty years, possibly a lot longer. Even the architecture of the tunnel says it's fairly old, save for some sections with steel plates
tragic really the amount of blood sweat and tears that will have gone into building that tunnel and there it is abandoned and unused ,
frustratednomad One of the reasons we love exploring and documenting them :o)

Yeah very nice video ty.Good fence at the entrance for impailing your enemies if you have any lol!:)I Suppose thats just like an old shail mining railway or something is it?
Why was this tunnel abandoned? why is it no longer in service? I would think they would dig up the rails to recycle the steel.
Carrying large lumps of metal in confined spaces is impractical. Or the tinkers would have had it years ago.
Where is this place? I'd like to visit it for myself.
I just realized im the first one to comment in 2020 at this vid
How long have the tracks been there?
Were did you find that tunnel ?
That is one bright ass flashlight!!!
That torch is amazing anyone know what is is?
Fantastic, also mint music.
haha I know! I just got the new metro, looks good so far! :)
I think that stretch is stabilized thanks to Ranger activities, but look out for Fourth Reich recon patrols, they've been increasing their activity lately, they're up to something
No such word as "alot"!! Any history on it? Like when's the last time train went through?
Can anyone tell me the name of the music pls ?
The higher the lumens, the brighter the light

Stand still laddy. If you don't eat your meat, you can't have any pudding. How can you have any pudding if you don't eat your meat? (Saw The Wall live at Earls Court in 1980!)

Always struck me as a bit of a circular argument, that "lyric".
This rocks!!!
This tunnel is only used now to haul in the beer for St. Patty's day.
music is great
TeEnZiE, where is this tunnel?
where in this world is this historical treasure located?
Life After People

I'd like to explore that one any chance messaging me location 👍
who is the music by?
Now i am a very good person to photograph or look into this becasue i like this stuff could you possible tell me and me only where this is?
wow wow wow! Its had to believe that they would just leave it all there or even that hey who close the railway in the first place!
It'd be an interesting moment if he discovered it wasn't disused after all ......
Even the architecture of the tunnel says it's fairly old, save for some sections with steel plates
wow! nice video, but where is this place??????
