Great news! The commissioners of Bedford and Fulton Counties have agreed to form a joint municipal authority to take over and manage the TOPP trail (formerly known as Pike 2 Bike). The authority should be formed by April 2018 and the final takeover process should occur shortly after. Also, the update to the 2006 Master Plan will be available soon. This is going to happen! Also, the Trivium Racing marathon last October was great. The owner is planning for 1000 runners next year!
Thank you very much for sharing your video. I love it and have watched it about 4 times. We live near the Sideling Hill Tunnel and only about 10 miles from the Ray's Hill one. I walk on the abandoned turnpike often and enjoyed the view from your little drone. I never knew such a thing existed! I'm so blessed to live in these beautiful mountains of PA and it's nice to hear others exclaiming over the beauty of the colors and leaves.
Well I think you are very lucky to live so close to a national gem like the old alignment of the turnpike. If only more people knew about it maybe then some funding would come through to help maintain the trail so everyone can have a chance to see it. It has to be one of my most favorite places I have ever visited, the feeling of being on it and approaching those massive tunnel entrances, the smell, the sights, I just love it all. It is such a long drive for me but worth it every time I make the trip down. Glad you enjoyed the video! The colors that weekend were just perfect!
Great video. I grew up in this area and know it very well. I spent a lot of time on some of those mountains and as a teenager I rode through the tunnel on my bike with friends. Good memories. Awesome video!
I remember going through this tunnel in 1965, at the age of 12. Great memories. The whole length of the PA turnpike was narrow & had just a guard fence between oncoming lanes.
That is awesome !..I take the turnpike all the time,I knew there were abandoned tunnels,I only knew about one west of Somerset.I had no idea there more along or near Breezewood....Awesome to make it a trail !
Cool video! My friends and I raced our motorcycles there in the 90's. All the bikes back then didn't have fuel injection, so we could do key shots, and they sounded like canons going off inside that tunnel.
Kyle, FANTASTIC! I just saw your 2013 RUclips this morning. My wife & I were intrigued because we lived in Bedford from 1996-2000, and never knew about this!
well I think a trip is in order to come explore! There is nothing like this in the country and it is so darn cool seeing it up close. The video does not do it justice of how massive the portals are when you are standing directly under it. Definitely a bucket list item to visit
Incredible video! Just the right time of year to capture this amazing footage... with all the fall foliage! Awesome overhead views of the old alignment of the Tpk. as well as the approaches to the tunnels. Looks like it was a hell of a lot of fun to shoot this great stuff! Those 'copters outfitted with the GoPro are a real game changer in the online video community, as they offer a never-before-seen perspective of a lot of stuff. I was so happy to see this linked on a FB page dedicated to the abandoned PA. Tpk. It made my night :)
Good luck on the work for the Turnpike. We have a 50km stretch of abandoned railway line running through the Maine and Loire area of France. The tracks have been removed which leaves a perfect bike trail. Some of the old railway buildings still standing ( and occupied ) with quite a lot of mining history.
Really nice video, love the straight down shot over the tunnel entrance. Hope something good happens with this stretch of highway, would be an awesome bike trail. Thanks again.
I shared this video with everyone on the Abandoned Pennsylvania Turnpike group on Facebook last night, and what a response!!! I think you've gotten some new subscribers as a result. This is awesome footage! I particularly loved the aerial view of the old Cove Valley Service Plaza. You can really see the entrance and exit points really well from the air. Also, I loved the flyover from Sideling Hill Tunnel's eastern portal up over to the new alignment. That's a view none of us ever get to see. Thank you!
you're very welcome, I am kind of disappointed with RUclips's compression settings though, my PC copy is so much more crisp and clear. I filmed in 2.7k resolution but they compress it so hard unfortunately so you really don't get to see all the great detail from the footage but it still turned out not too bad
It was wonderful!!! I'm so glad you shared. It's obvious you really care about the fate of the pike, and that you really love the place. I grew up about 10 miles from the pike and 15 miles from Breezewood. This is back home for me.
I just planned a trip for two weekends from now with some friends. I was able to share this amazing (and timely) edit with them as a preview. Thanks for making it, and I'll look for your geocaches.
Awesome drone photos! My family and I would travel the turnpike to see Mom's side of the family in NJ. Always looked forward to going through the tunnels, and was quite disappointed to find that these tunnels were bypassed. Passed through in 2004, could stay just long enough to take a few snapshots of the West Rays Hill portal. Would love to hike or bike this section, but my wife's health wouldn't lend itself to such a trek. Again, awesome fall colors!
That would indeed be the coolest bike path destination in the country. You could even add a few bike campgrounds with labs, showers, tables and firepits. That would rock, create jobs, etc. I think it's an amazing idea. You could even make a drone area for the RC hobbyists. I'm one too. It's super cool. Thanks.
Pete Jansen I’ve biked there for years and it would be ruined if there were a lot of people and workers. The best part of the place is the peace and quiet. It’s a nice getaway from all the people and that would all be gone if there a tourists biking there all the time
I used to travel to Scranton from Pittsburgh to visit my cousins every summer from 58 to 66. I remember how we used to look forward to the tunnels. Even back then the road was a mess, but it's still sad to see.
Kyle, If you make this trip again, you owe it to yourself to make a quick run from Breezewood to Hancock Md. to the C&O canal rails and trails....Excellent bike trail and beautiful in the fall....The lock house, canal, and bridges are nice to see.....Excellent video of the turnpike....Thanks for sharing
Great video! I've been meaning to get to the Abandoned Turnpike for a few years now, but I live a little ways away (Greensburg). When I first found out about it, I was obsessed with it, and I think I still am. Going to make it a point to get there on the first nice spring day!
Thank you Don for your selfless commitment to this project! This is a one of a kind world class biking/hiking, recreation trail. This trail is ideally suited for our disabled veterans to come and enjoy the great outdoors in the Buchanan State Forest serenely situated in America's Appalachian mountains. It can be traversed using various wheeled devices to include wheelchairs once the asphalt is smoothed out a bit. It is a wonderful venue for our heroes to enjoy the pristine outdoors with the rest of America. This all American Heroes trail is a superb rallying project for all Military Support Organizations (MSOs) to rally behind. Think about those who have given so much -- A wonderful project for the Wounded Warrior foundation to sponsor! God bless America and its Servicemembers.
COL T Scott Lloyd Don has been doing such a fantastic job pushing this project to an actual reality. I can't wait for the day when it becomes an official trail, and trust me, when the ribbon cutting ceremony takes place I will be there to witness it
Killer footage man! We hiked it a week after you filmed this. John from the hotel let us know about this video. He is a great guy and the Quality Inn was a awesome place to stay. We camped out by wooden bridge creek after the 2nd tunnel. It was so beautiful! Thanks for sharing this! Take care -Chris
Windham Woodcraft yeah that John is a great guy and the Quality Inn is the perfect place to stay, it still has that personal touch with some hometown family feeling to it, not to mention an awesome breakfast! Glad you enjoyed!
Kyle Mills I was one of the people with Windham Woodcraft the following week. Man, your footage here is simply stunning! What an awesome perspective! Thank you for sharing! Peace, Shane
Update:Seven proposals have been received from consultants for the update to the 2006 Master Plan. The work should be completed in a year. Last October the Secretaries of the PA Dept. of Transportation and Conservation and Natural Resources toured the P2B. Finally, a MARATHON will be held in late October, 2017 in partnership with Trivium Racing. Cool stuff!
Though i would share something. in your vid you noticed that between the tunnels the road seemed well saved and even lines. that from 2003 when the US Army conditioned the road to use as a training are for combat convoy training. We entered from breezewood and turned left to the hotel. behind the hotel was a dirt road to the old pike. from there we staged planned and set out on a convoy using paint ball guns we would travel through both tunnels with ambushes and ieds setup along the route. Just though i would share some current history on that sections life and history. A road that once families traveled just to go pic nix was also used to help train soldiers and save lives
I remember truck stop at breezewood, it was my favorite for the beautiful area and that would make a nice bike path for all. you took this video at the rite time of the year. thank you nice flight
Great video. I find going in early Soring before all the leaves grow 9n the trees gives it a much more open feel and less congested. It feels more like the photos and videos you see when the Turnpike was new and just opened.
Cool video..nice job. Being a truck driver i have driven the pike a lot, and i never knew this was here. I also just realized that the current pike goes directly over the old Sideling hill tunnel which i have driven over so many times and never realized.
chrispixx when traveling east over Sideling if you look down to your right, you can see the clearing where the old road passes through, especially in the fall when the leaves start to disappear. Stop in Breezewood sometime at the TA. The trail starts not far from there, an easy walk
Enjoyed the video. I watched the others that you were hand holding the camera. Enjoyed them as well. Love the colors showcasing our beautiful state in the Fall. I probably rode through those tunnels as a little girl on trips to Breezewood heading south.
Very nice video! Fall in PA is absolutely awesome! I drove the PA TPK often when I lived in Ohio, and my parents were in NJ. An aerial view of the abandoned turnpike section and tunnels provides a perspective you just can’t get from ground level. I particularly enjoyed the longer stretches where you flew along the roadway. I agree about your hesitancy to fly the tunnel. My concern would not be lack of GPS, but I’d certainly change several settings. I’d turn off RTH, because I don’t want it to rise to any altitude on loss of signal. Also, in the tunnel it has no GPS, so it doesn’t know where it is, and can’t figure out what course to fly. My main concern would be magnetic interference from metal structures, even rebar in concrete. Flying a drone without GPS is not that big a deal; I had a GPS drone (Hubsan 502) where I could turn-off the GPS. The big difference is that you have to manually correct for drift from winds, which can be quite a challenge in gusty winds. However, movement of air in the tunnel, would be much less. I don’t know which drone you have, but I’d run the idea past a newsgroup/forum of people familiar with it. Again, great video!
FINALLY, FINALLY............someone posting truly awesome footage and great use of their drone!!!! Thank you. I hope to have something to share. I doubt it will be anywhere near that quality though.
On September 23, 2017 from 10 - 4 there will be an Open House in Breezewood at the site of the old Ramada Inn. Bands, food, presentations and tours including lighting in the Sideling Hill Tunnel. Please come!!!
Thanks for posting this, we actually went there today. there's actually 2 Tunnels, the 2nd one is probably 5 miles further west after leaving the 1st one.
Kenneth Wise the video starts the old Cove Valley service plaza then heads west to Sideling Hill. Then continues on the other side to Rays Hill finally finishing at the Breezewood side of Rays. Both tunnels are in the video. Thanks for watching
+Greg Miller Old turn pike was narrow and unsafe. The cost to tear it out would be the real waste of money. Let nature take it back....besides, it also gives the teenagers a place to drink 😃
As kids in the late-'50s and early 1960s it was a thrill to pass through those tunnels (weren't there seven or so?) going from Langhorne, Pennsylvania, to Pittsburgh. Dad would drive most of the time (Mom would take the helm when called upon) though I think the car knew the way on its own.
Wow, that is beautiful, Pennsylvania's landscape is so green. I want to go there one day. In Colorado, the Rockies are never green, I think because there is so much snow here, they are always snow capped. The Appalachians are so unique :)
Wow, thanks again for another awesome video, Kyle!! Those fall colors are spectacular...love fall time of the year...all the red, green and gold just makes the visit to this abandoned tunnel that more special!! The aerial view alone of the turnpike and the fall foliage surrounding it gives it a more vintage look, really shows just how old and long ago this turnpike was abandoned (it does to me anyhow). Many thanks again, Kyle, I look forward to more of you're video's (: Take care and be safe on you're adventures (: A Subscribed friend, *~*Trish*~*
Kyle Mills yvw (: I wish I could go up there and visit. I have a friend that lives close to the area (a really small town by the name of "Sykesville") maybe I'll go visit her and drag her and her hubby here for an adventure (: My husband loves stuff like this to, maybe the 4 of us can find a treasure or 2 while we're there (: I'll let ya know...looking forward to you're future video's but for now I'm going to watch some more of you're video's from the past (: Take care, safe adventures as always!! *~*Trish*~*
AWESOME, AWESOME, AWESOME!!!!!! In comparison footage from other videos, has the roadway been cleared of brush? There are portions of the road bed that looks like they are free from some of the overgrowth that has been allowed to grow on the road side.
+Drone Ranger it was immediately noticeable when it lost GPS, started to change altitude and move back and forth. I lost the Phantom 2 last year in Lake Erie with my GoPro 4 on it after the batteries in my remote died. I got the Phantom 3 Pro after and it was much better with the optical sensors when losing the GPS, much much more stable flight which I used in the 2015 version of this same video.
+Kyle Mills Yeah... I would have been biting my nails in such tight quarters. Might be able to go in further with a Phantom 3/4 or Inspire 1 (because of their optical flow sensors).
Bicycled this about 5 years ago and had a big crash around Pump Station Rd. after switching from one side to the other and then hitting loose asphalt. Still have scars on my arm and knee from it. Nonetheless, still a great ride and would love to see it as an official trail.
I wish I could find some old photos of the old Cove Valley Plaza.. I'm doing a report on abandoned places before and after for my advanced composition class in college. Would have been awesome go find the picture.. Cool video tho!! Best one I've seen on the abandoned turnpike videos! (Well other than the guy who has old footage of traveling through the tunnels back in the 40's or whatever that was pretty cool too :)
Your footage is stunning! We are shooting a short film in the tunnels soon. Any chance you might allow us to use some of this footage and credit you on IMDB and screen credits?
+Kyle Mills not sure if you got my email. Mine is danaolita@gmail.com if you can let me know we only wanted to use a small portion in a short film at the end.
Just ran into this today, looks like the state of PA. owns the stretch but it may have turned it over to the county it's passing through . There's yet one more not far a hour or two from this in N.Y. Got to be dozens of closed alternates in the two states without going west of the Mississippi as I recall has a tunnel as well no power along the route same deal. No way your going to see anyone drop a quarter in a bucket rolling by a gate at one end or the other for a while.
The update to the 2006 Master Plan has started. It will be conducted by Navarro & Wright. They will be using social media extensively, so keep your eyes open!
Hello Everyone,This is Don Schwartz, Director of the Bedford County (PA) Planning Commission. I have been working on this project for 5 years. We have formed a committee that is working on an update to the existing Master Plan for the corridor (2006). By next year a decision will be made on whether or not to move forward to design and construction. All of the committee meetings are filmed on the Bedford Free Press website (bedfordcountyfreepress.com).This project can and will happen if there is enough public support. Please send any comments to me at dschwartz@bedfordcountypa.orgDon
Fantastic news! Congratulations Don!!
@Game Bred Duramax LOL doubt it! They will just stop you and ask you for a dollar

Awesome video!
Amazing how nature eventually reclaims everything.
I remember going through this tunnel in 1965, at the age of 12. Great memories. The whole length of the PA turnpike was narrow & had just a guard fence between oncoming lanes.

first time knowing about this Pa abandoned road and tunnel..first time seeing a go pro on a drone...very nice and thank you..
Wow. The colours of those trees in autumn are just spectacular!
Beautiful, I love this. Wind and rain took our fall colors prematurely so I didn't get to see them. Thank you for this gorgeous tour.
Never seen a landscape with so many different colours in the trees. Really nice.
Wonderful tree colors, Thanks for the view.
Glad you enjoyed, this is one of my most favorite places to visit, especially when all the fall colors are in their peak
Good luck on the work for the Turnpike. We have a 50km stretch of abandoned railway line running through the Maine and Loire area of France. The tracks have been removed which leaves a perfect bike trail. Some of the old railway buildings still standing ( and occupied ) with quite a lot of mining history.
Well done. I hope one day I'll get to see the abandoned Turnpike brought back to its original look.
I think you've gotten some new subscribers as a result. you're very welcome, I am kind of disappointed with RUclips's compression settings though, my PC copy is so much more crisp and clear. I filmed in 2.7k resolution but they compress it so hard unfortunately so you really don't get to see all the great detail from the footage but it still turned out not too bad

You're very welcome, glad you enjoyed.
Well put together video with relaxing music. I particularly liked the way you labeled the camera direction. Thanks.
I just planned a trip for two weekends from now with some friends. I was able to share this amazing (and timely) edit with them as a preview. Thanks for making it, and I'll look for your geocaches.

Nice drone film. As a kid I remember going through these tunnels in the 60s on the way to Wildwood, NJ

I've been here 3 times and Love it. I learned about it in 2006. Finally made it there in March 2013 the first day of Spring.
We rode these tunnels about 2 yrs ago really neat. Did't have proper lights so expect to do ride again soon.
Love this! Very cool. Definitely a great place to make into a bike trail. I live out west. We would love it if this was in our "backyard".
colors colors everywhere colors,soooo beautiful.

best use of a drone and camera i have seen yet, gorgeous area.
that was so relaxing and cool. All these abandoned turn pikes. Make you wonder how they can afford to leave so many miles unused. Excelant flying.
+Jim N. that is your tax dollars being waisted my friend
+Greg Miller Old turn pike was narrow and unsafe.
The cost to tear it out would be the real waste of money.
Let nature take it back....besides, it also gives the teenagers a place to drink 😃
+Wil Hobbs Very true. Also nice to see nature eat up a man made thing that destroys nature. Earth fixing itself. Love it!
That's a great video. I hope I can bike the turnpike one day.

Beautiful footage, the fall colors are awesome.
Many thanks again, Kyle, I look forward to more of you're video's (: Take care and be safe on you're adventures (:

Thanks Trish, glad you enjoyed! It was another great trip and the colors were amazing, love visiting the old turnpike, especially this time of year!

Nice. Beautiful landscape. Thanks for sharing it.
thank you for this. best footage i've seen by far on youtube
Great video - quite a beautiful area!
Beautiful camera work, thank you, enjoyed it so much!
I was wondering where this was. Love those fall colors of PA.
Gorgeous autumn colours.
Awesome as hell man :) like the colors on the trees +++
This is an amazing video - thank you for sharing it on here!
AWESOME, AWESOME, AWESOME!!!!!! In comparison footage from other videos, has the roadway been cleared of brush? There are portions of the road bed that looks like they are free from some of the overgrowth that has been allowed to grow on the road side.
Great video with wonderful colors.
A tourist railroad similar to the Durango, Colorado, might become popular. The Durango railroad has Silverton as its destination... It's very scenic!
awesome video. this would make a great "rails to trails" ride, so to speak. not exactly rails, but you get the idea.
Was surprised to see you fly a Phantom 2 into that tunnel! Very good flying. :)
+Drone Ranger I was nervous to say the least. They tend to get a bit wonky when they suddenly lose gps
Wow this is great work , thank you for sharing
Lovely colours on the trees.
Enjoyed this video, thumbs up. Cheers from Sint Maarten
Thanks for posting this, way too cool
Highway Haven you're welcome, glad you enjoyed it
breath taking ....wow...very nice
Great video, thanks for making the effort and posting.
I would buy that whole road. And turn it into a big racetrack. An awesome quarter mile track out of the tunnal. And a road coarse around it. Perfect!
Stunning! Thanks, mate.
I wish I could find some old photos of the old Cove Valley Plaza.. I'm doing a report on abandoned places before and after for my advanced composition class in college. Would have been awesome go find the picture.. Cool video tho!! Best one I've seen on the abandoned turnpike videos! (Well other than the guy who has old footage of traveling through the tunnels back in the 40's or whatever that was pretty cool too :)
well if you do anything on the pike let me know and I will give you some footage you can use ;)
very cool I like how you did this,I wonder when the old Pennsylvania turnpike closed?
This section closed in 1968
Kyle Mills thanks!
This is bloody good work.
Beautiful, great job guys.
Awesome work.
I like to foliage of those trees.
Could you had programmed your out point and in between and return points on it?
Your footage is stunning! We are shooting a short film in the tunnels soon. Any chance you might allow us to use some of this footage and credit you on IMDB and screen credits?
Rory Nicole I have allowed others to use some of my footage in the past and would be willing to discuss further, contact me at kylemills200@gmail.com
+Kyle Mills not sure if you got my email. Mine is danaolita@gmail.com if you can let me know we only wanted to use a small portion in a short film at the end.
Amazing footage and range!
This looks so freaking awesome!
The update to the 2006 Master Plan has started. It will be conducted by Navarro & Wright. They will be using social media extensively, so keep your eyes open!
Donald Schwartz Woo-hoo! thanks for update Don, can't wait for the marathon later this year! take care and keep it up!
Nice scenery you caught
Love the colors. Here in California we don't have any counterpart.
Keep up the great work Don! Hoping to be there to witness the grand opening one day!
Donald Schwartz can’t we just leave it in peace so us people who use it now won’t be bothered
