I could potentially be biased because I have a 1989 325iS, but I really do think the M20 sounds better than the M50. Or any of the 24Vs really.
Is ture, I think M20 is one of the best sounding bmw L6 engine model.
I have an E30 M50 swap. The M20 sounds a whole lot better, much more smooth, racier sound.
M50 is raspy and metallic. Good sounding, but not M20 level good.
S50's sound better tho.
However I agree M20 sound better than any of the M5X engines.
I'd really like to know exactly how they tuned that first 325i. It almost sounds like an M88 :o
