  • The Truth About Davy Jones (1945 - 2012) Davy Jones Life Story
In September 1965, a small ad appeared in L.A.’s Daily Variety: “MADNESS!! Auditions. Singers for acting roles in new TV series. Running parts for 4 insane boys.” Longhaired kids showed up by the hundreds at a studio lot just off Sunset Boulevard, ready and willing to sell out - among the aspiring TV stars were Stephen Stills, Harry Nilsson and Van Dyke Parks, all pre-fame. But one tiny, chipmunk-cheeked performer walked right past the other guys, straight into the producers’ office. “I was like, ‘Wait a minute! Who was that?'” says Peter Tork, who would become the Monkees‘ bassist. “I was extremely jealous.”
As Tork and the rest of the world would soon discover, that was 19-year-old Davy Jones, a seasoned professional who’d already been working on TV and Broadway and London stages for half a decade. In a screen test with producers Bob Rafelson and Bert Schneider, he comes across as sheltered and naive - a precocious kid who couldn’t imagine the hall of mirrors he was about to enter: He was auditioning to play a prefab Paul McCartney in the Monkees, a fake band that would soon fill real stadiums and outsell the Beatles themselves.
“I’m really a clean-cut kid,” Jones chirps in his Manchester accent, standing in the producers’ office wearing a newsboy hat and turtleneck. Jones struggles to answer questions from Schneider and Rafelson (they would go on to produce Easy Rider and the Rafelsondirected Five Easy Pieces) - but does better when the producers ask him to dance: He does so on command, breaking into a cheerful little jig.
At that moment, Jones won what would be the last major role of his life. In just a year, he’d become one of the biggest pop stars of his time - and lose his chance at what had been a promising acting career. The Monkees’ commercial heyday lasted a mere two years, faltering soon after they tried to take control of their own music and TV show. When the bubblegum burst, they were left nearly broke. But Davy Jones would be a Monkee for as long as he lived.

I met him while enjoying “Cats” in London, 1985. He and his wife were sitting behind me. At intermission, I introduced myself. He signed my playbill and was so gracious. A true star!

As the lead singer of The Monkees, Davy Jones had a voice that could melt hearts. His contributions to the band's sound were truly unforgettable.

I was raised with the Monkees! Watched the show when I was 10 and my whole family liked the Monkees! My sister and I used to do the Davy dance all the time! My sister was a big Davy fan while I was a Peter girl! Now I'm 68 and still love the Monkees! Saw them in concert during 86 and love that Micky is carrying on the legacy!

Hello, I read my comments I sent, I'm sorry about some of mistakes in spelling, or the way I have written a sentence. I was a bit emotional with my feelings when I wrote it. You could say, my ❤ got in the way. THANKYOU AGAIN ❤ for caring enough to do the video.Very thoughtful❤ Mary

My favorite Davy Jones song was Cuddly Toy, the dirtiest song ever to slide past the TV censors.
Unlike what this video stated, every member of the band played at least one instrument. Davy was a good drummer, but he was The Cute One. So the producers didn't want him hidden behind a drum kit. They put Micky behind the drums, even though he was a good guitar player. Micky settled in and busted ass to learn to play drums.

I remember the Monkees were on the cover of TV Guide and my young aunt read the article to us. We watched the shows debut that night. I was 9. Couldn't tell you when the Trading cards with gum were sold - but I had them as well. I love their shows/ music. In fact MTV aired the shows in 1986. The Monkees used a synthesizer on one of their records when it wasn't popular yet. Thanx! PS Davy Jones was in the stage show Oliver on The Ed Sullivan Show the same night The Beatles were on.

I saw Davy perform live at Boston City Hall. Fabulous! I adored him as a preteen. He asked the audience to look into their partner’s eyes and sing a sincere love song with him. My fiancee fessed up he was a big liar and opportunist. Davy has just spoke how painful divorce was. Thanks Davy! I didn’t marry that Jerk!
