Why does a shack cost even 300k??? There’s going to be a hobo shooting up in it within 2 weeks.
For those who are shocked, it’s because you never bothered how much public utilities cost. A non-outrageous public bathroom costs ~$500k (a bit higher in SF because the mandated “Civic Design Review” process is costly).
It is that outrageous because the initial proposal is for it to be a structure, which requires architectural design, construction and extra management costs due to the complexity.
That’s why the actual outrage should be on why SF can’t learn the lesson from Portland to order modular single-stall loos in bulk to drive the cost down to closer to $100k each.
The other thing that the news didn’t report is SF currently need $600k a year to operate and maintain a public bathroom for 24/7.
Incorrect. Many of us are outraged AND not stupid. We realize construction costs money. Yet isn’t it strange how as soon as private companies get involved the price drops significantly? A single public trash can in San Fran costs over $20,000. The costs have nothing to do with anything you’re talking about. It’s 90% about ineptitude, lack of accountability, stupidity, and corruption. And for what? A single toilet? Porta potties cost about $1-$2k a piece. But 10, hire an engineer to rig up a secure foundation for them to sit on for $50-$100k. Hire local artists to make them look beautiful. Put a purell station out. Poof. 10 times as many people can go to the bathroom, local artists make money, the city saves $1.6 million.

Noe Valley? That little neighborhood. You got Whole Foods and all those coffee shops to use the restroom. This public toilet is really not all that urgent. It sounds like a “bathroom contractor” wants to milk the tax dollars for an easy 300 k? With the help and cooperation of an official giving this gift of a job to the contractor.

It’s not a good thing when something so ridiculous and looney - the only explanation is “it’s San Francisco” is laughable and sad. San Francisco - the liberal epicenter and Nancy Pelosi’s home. San Fran - the very best of location and real estate the world can offer….and where we tolerate the rampant drugs, crime, and the ridiculous. 😅.
