When I buy an expensive watch, I remove the original strap and put on a good quality new generic strap (I like Hadley Roma). I save the expensive original new strap, just in case I decide to sell the watch (buyers want new looking straps that are made for the brand).
No love for Fluco straps? Hirsch, makes good cow leather straps at well. Hadley-Roma straps has a good selection of exotic leathers to choose from, all of good quality. Edit: when it comes to the original leather or rubber strap, no I don't not care. original bracelet if possible, yes.

On the maintenance side it is also important to condition the inside part of the strap before using and during wear once a while. As that part getting exposed to sweat. The salt from the sweat destroying the fibers of leather and it is getting cracked.
I highly recommend a deployant clasp on a leather strap to help it last. The deplayant clasp will allow you to fasten the strap without repeatedly bending the leather and causing it to crack.
we have 1 watchmaker, habring2, and 1 strap manufacturer (they even like each other) Hirsch. I think they have/had the patent on waterproof leather straps. I got a few by them, a normal one lets say you need 22 (lugs) - 18 (buckle) manufactured for you, grey suede in my case for the bronze oris, around 100.

I agree with you regarding originality. Bracelets are nice to have the original, leather doesn't bother me as I'm likely to change it anyway. In either case it isn't typically a dealbreaker for me but can definitely have an affect on price.
I put back on the original Bulova bracelet on my watch . It is from 1950 . I just feel that it is part of the history. Now all my watches have the original straps or bracelets .

I like original strap with the watch for the collectors side of things. It gives you the option to use other straps and to also sell the watch as a complete piece. I took my 'expensive' Vulture Minerva Liscio off and put the original Orient strap back on my orient. In that case I prefered the original strap. However I will put all kinds of sports watches on rubber and plastic strap which are not origional (aka NATOs and Diver straps) lol.
Hello Tim! In this video you mention that you believe the rivets on the Eichmuller strap are a mistake because they don’t go all the way through both layers of the strap. I have owned two IWC big pilot examples and the original IWC straps on both were the same construction. Perhaps they were better quality than the Eichmuller but the back of the rivets were also concealed between the layers. Just fyi

I own a 9ct. 1960s manual wind Longines. I recently replaced it's strap with a Hirsch leather band that was almost identical to the orriginal...and I retained the orriginal gold plated Longines buckle. For me it was important.

Ideally I prefer straps with quick release pins, so you can change them out easily and often.
The best way to preserve a leather strap is to use deployant buckles. Branded strap will fetch a better price for your watch, and a strap with the same brand of watch will have an “original “ look thus will keep better value. Best watch video finishing . 🎸

I mostly agree about what you say about steel straps though in some cases like old seikos a company called strapcode produces better quality than seiko ever did. In fact talking about seikos and in particular the famous Alpinist ( I have one ) is also famous on every forum for people saying : Get it off that Seiko faux crocodile its rubbish. . An aftermarket decent leather strap is an essential. Thanks for the info on those companies I have not heard of before.Will be studying them as an alternative to some quality ( and yes they are quality ) but uber pricy Italian companies . Cheers Tim
We live in China. What I do with straps is I send in the originals to a strap maker. They copy the stuff 1:1 and give me this same style strap at custom length.

On vintage watches, original leather straps wear out, even get disgusting from use. But it would be nice to get the original signed clasp if there was one. I'm not sure an original Rolex strap really has nicer leather than a Rios. But it definitely has a bigger markup.

If my watches are inexpensive, the bracelets they come with are too, often they are afterthought only. Something to make the watch look inviting in advertising and sales literature. The watchmakers know I will change the bracelet because they have (wisely) put all their manufacturing costs towards the watch and supplied it to me upon connected links of metal fecal matter. So I buy straps. Nato straps, Leather straps, Silicone straps, Cordura straps, Woolen straps,... I have dozens of them! 18 or 20mm? I better buy one of each. Shit! 22mm width. I better buy some 22's. We are all the same I suspect. I grew up in the 70's and early '80's. If you lived in Australia like me, the term 'Jap Crap' will be familiar. Japanese manufacturing was synonymous with generic brand names and (erroneously I believe) inferior quality. And the men that were the age I am now in the 1970's remembered the 2nd War: The Japanese people were not remembered fondly back then. Yet now Seiko is an historic marque. The "Pouge'. The 'Bullhead'. Very collectable. Will any of my mass produced inexpensive watches be sought after in 50 years? I can speculate. But I can not know. Keep everything. Keep it in plastic. Keep it Dry. Keep it Safe. Would you buy the vintage Daytona with original box and papers over a vintage Daytona in generic protective clothing? So would I. Original straps are not necessary. They are just another way to make money with a brand name. By the way, there are some great Italian made watch straps too. (Nothing agains made in Germany 😉 )

I just want the original clasp, in some cases it may be worth purchasing the offer with the original strap (assuming it has the clasp attached!) if the other offers lack the original clasp.

I keep my lether straps hydrate with a bit of hand cream every week or so or mink oil every few months

Seiko seems to be an exception where you have an aftermarket with bracelets of the same or superior quality
I make my own strap and I use nice materials with the cheap method. It's fun hobby and I can use scraps of horween
