Depends on how open to Shadow Company you were. I really did like Graves up until this point, which is why it blows so hard that he turns on us and goes villain mode. The betrayal wasn’t supposed to be one of tragedy so much as it would be one of mistrust. It’s the disappointment of having to fight a character that you slowly started to like due to his “wild Wild West” nature. That same nature and charisma that got you hooked on him is the same one that would prove to be the relationship’s downfall, and eventually lead to his death.
You could tell Graves cared about his men even if it doesn’t seem like it sometimes. You could tell he really wanted to call in reinforcements to help the escort unit but Shepard prevented him.

@@MortisDebates It's absolutely worth it. Nostalgia or not, new MW2 has a different, otherwise feel to it. It's difficult to explain. I've grinded the campaign for 8+ hours a day a few days now. I grew up with CoD4 and OG MW2 back a decade ago, so it's not like I just say it because I can. The new MW2 simply has another type of nostalgia with a different perspective on it. I'll save you the lecture, but if you're considering it then don't hesitate.
I really love the way Shadow Company and Graves were characterized in the campaign and I was honestly hoping they wouldn’t betray us. Graves really comes off as a guy that really cares about his soldiers and formed Shadow Company not for pure profit, but rather because just like Price, he sees the ROE is ineffective and is especially dangerous for the soldiers on the ground. And that’s really why I don’t like the betrayal in this. It honestly feels like once he becomes an enemy, he does a complete 180. Why else would he tell the Shadows to treat Mexican Special Forces and 141 like brothers? I think it would’ve been better if he acted more like his hand was being forced and didn’t really want to hurt anyone he didn’t need to. It really did sadden me when I saw Graves name go from blue to red, especially since in Alone Shadow Company can be heard discussing their worry about Ghost and Soap as well as even comforting a kid.
@@Donikin it’s just bad writing. Graves changes in service to the plot. There’s no reason for him to terrorize the civilians other than to make him look like a dick. It would be like Farah using gas because she wants to free Urzikstan when we see that she despises its use.
Well at least Shepherd's betrayal didn't directly result in Ghost and Soap's being brutally yeeted off the game this time, giving 141 a chance to deck the general and his Shadow Company good and hard while having both old and new allies as well as "the enemy of my enemy is my friend". However, having Makarov as an additional thorn in the eye is going to make things more difficult and interesting.
@@SimplyDuker He died because his stab wound opened up when Makarov detonated the bombs in the bell tower. It wasn’t the explosion that injured Soap, it was his stab wound opening back up that killed him. Soap never had time to fully recover due to World War 3 so he still had stitches
The old Shepherd lost a complete regiment of soldiers in Modern Warfare and his own asset was used by Makarov to start WW3. He grew resentfull and wanted Makarov by himself. He used his blank check to get all the credits for hunting Makarov. TF 141 became a loose end when they had access to intel with the hole Makarov playbook, most likely including intel on Allen and the airport attack. He betrayed TF 141 so that the truth about Allen would never come to light, while he retained the status of a war hero while cornering Makarov. Now in 2022 he delivered missiles to allies off the books and had those missiles on the loose and targeting US. Remember when Ghost found the first missile and the ditched Laswell ideas to grab intel on where the missile came from and also with Mctavish, when he burried the ideia of finding out where the terrorists got the missiles and wanted to know only where they were going. Even Shadow Company dropped the ball on this one, loosing the missiles, so they cut off TF 141 when they were getting closer to the truth. In both games Sheperds proxy war fired back when the the russian ultranacionalists turned the tables on him and he went with his scorched earth tactics to cut the loose ends and save his ass.
Your missing quite a bit a bit about Shepard from OG MW. Firstly it was the nuke that set him off. Nothing else. Shepard leaked Allen’s allegiance to makarov so that Russia would invade the US and he would get his “blank check” which is why he absolutely had to kill makarov and get the DSM(because both contained evidence that he not only was complicit in the terror attic but that he helped frame America for it). The blank check was him wanting to rebuild the american military (after asad nuked a large portion of it) in his image and make America essentially the global police. He killed ghost and roach Because they were complicit in the cover up and the whole of 141 was considerably to close to the truth to be left alive. It was nothing to to with him resenting makarov or wanting marakov by himself.
This betrayal by Shepard feels much more pathetic (character wise) than the other version of him. he did something illegal (with decent intentions allegedly) and it ended up blowing up in his face, and instead of trusting the highly effective multi national spec ops team he's formerly aligned with he turns on them and is ok with graves trying to kill them all because he can't take accountability for his failure and is too proud to ask for help. He put his pride above the worlds safety all because he couldn't admit he effed up.
Sooooo nothing really changed much except Shepherd's boys here didn't get nuked. When Conrad/Walker can't admit responsibility due to pride and heroism it's a harrowing reality of war. Yet when a general like reboot Shepherd loses his mind in the same vein, it's "pathetic".
kinda feels like what most people in power in the politics do nowadays, doing whatever it takes to stay in power, even though some of their bad deeds has been exposed, it is automatically got covered and hidde from the public, its more like a snake approach
@@beatspopo I predicted that Shepherd would be a more political character in the reboot. The betrayal here fulfills my anticipations and expectations about him: someone who claims to be protecting his country but in reality is protecting his own ego. The only difference is that unlike the OG Shepherd, this one is more conscious about not getting caught red-handed. In MW2, he kills of Roach and Ghost in cold blood. In MWII, he lets Shadow company do all of his dirty work and tries to cover up for it with his own selfish reasoning. Definitely more pathetic, but also more realistic. I can name a dozen politicians and military leaders who have done and are doing the same thing that Gen. Shepherd did in the reboot. Kudos to Infinity Ward for writing this new character for Shepherd.
@@danielgeronimo5538 [Long Comment] I think that most people believe that because Shepherd was trying to cover up to protect himself rather than take responsibility for his actions, (in light of trying to avoid an international incident or war, despite all of the incidents with Iran and Al-Qatala and the Las Almas Cartel that he commanded) it's understandable how one can call this a pathetic move on Shepherd. He's trying to protect himself from a big mistake he made, while not realizing that if he took responsibility most of these missions wouldn't have happened, or at least they would have been easier to accomplish. That's the thought of a confused and egotistical mind, one perfect for Shepherd in this MW reboot where America is not (yet) at war, thus the political atmosphere is more in his favor. [Edit: If it were in a time of war, like in MW2, then the ethics and justifications are more lenient as the nations are rampantly trying to keep themselves on their feet. In the MWII timeline, the difference is that these actions were cloaked with the attempt to avoid war. The gravity of the former is greater than that of the latter, which is why it is seen as more "pathetic", even though both of those cases could be seen either as pathetic or as a cost of war.] Side note: You mentioned how in CoD 4 MW and MW2, Shepherd lost 30,000. Though that doesn't happen in MWII, Price mentioned in the last mission mentioned how there were about 30,000 people at the Pentagon in D.C. when Soap and Laswell were disarming the missile from Chicago. I thought that was a cool little sneaky Easter egg to point out.
As despicable as he is, I respect the OG Shepherd for being a competent fighter and genuinely believes in his goal to make America stronger. This Shepherd is just a coward without a shred of villainous valor in him.
Idk man, I like him. He seems like he's less of an immediate threat so maybe they're trying to make us let our guard down before they show how capable he really is. He is a Lieutenant General after all.

Some new COD Players claim they never saw Shepherd's betrayal coming. Us old COD MW players, we started sharpening our throwing knives as soon as we heard the name Shepherd.
i love this cutscene so much idk y, and even tho i had my suspicions about shadow bc of modern warfare 2, playing w and as them made me look past it, so this scene actually caught me off guard. i also love that soap and ghost grew together bc of this, and it shows in the final mission 2 when soap is on his own again. this was such an amazing goddamn game.
Obviously this doesn't beat Shepherds betrayal in the OG MW2 but I have to say they did great with this one too. Especially having it be Graves as the face of it all. Graves dead ass is one of the best newer Cod characters we've gotten in awhile (him and Adler). If only the No Russian mission in MW3 lived up to its predecessor....
Best part is even when Soap is being hunted in the next mission you can listen to Shadow Company members talking about how much they respect/fear 141 and don't want to raise their guns against them.
This “betrayel” felt unnecessary, why the heck does the owner of a contracting company that probably makes tuns of money want to lose his life commandeering a base in M E X I C O of all places. He’s in bed with a high ranking US military general and he betrays a team over a base in M E X I C O?

@@skinny6710 It’s because he was transporting the missiles illegally in the first place which is how they got stolen not only that but I think Shepard is in bed with Russia

Once upon a time, in an alternate universe, Shepherd was a different person entirely. He was still a commanding officer in the military, but he had a different outlook on life. He was a man of integrity and compassion, and he cared deeply about his men and their well-being. One day, Shepherd met a beautiful woman named Anna. She was kind, smart, and witty, and she quickly captured his heart. They fell in love and got married soon after. Shepherd and Anna had a happy life together. They had children and raised them with love and kindness. Shepherd continued to serve in the military, but he did so with a different perspective. He worked hard to protect his country and his men, but he also tried to make a positive difference in the world. He sought to build bridges instead of walls and to bring people together instead of driving them apart. As the years went by, Shepherd became a respected and beloved figure in his community. He was known for his kindness, his intelligence, and his unwavering dedication to his family and his country. And when he looked back on his life, he knew that he had made a difference in the world, not as a villain, but as a hero.
This whole game made me feel less like a soldier in a professional counter-terrorist unit and more like some rogue vigilante with lots of military training but the unit was just hashed together. Half the time your character is cut off, on the run, or injured. Arcade truck jumping, backstabbing generals and mercenaries that special forces don't even work with. There's a reason why Clean House mission from the first game was so awesome. You did Special Forces stuff with an elite unit, not a bunch of dudes against the world like a Tom Clancy novel.
I love that little detail if you have the subtitles on near the beginning as Graves is talking to you as soon as he says Shepherd sends his regards the color of his name goes from Blue to red indicating he is now your enemy
I KNEW Graves feels off. He acts and sounds like your classic, almost "cartoonish" villain with his "Yippie ki-yay" personality, except he actually has a character behind that because he really cares for his men despite being a band of mercenaries.
So LEGALLY speaking Graves didn't betray them, he detained Alejandro AFTER getting swung on and his guy lost trigger discipline and started firing which resulted in soap and ghost killing his soldiers when he only shot soap in the shoulder THEN chose to move on ghost so he wasn't shooting for kills, only to wound. That being said, he could've told Alejandro that Shephard was fucking them and since he was under orders he had to comply but out of respect gave them a heads up and pretended to follow orders. Graves seems like a guy who would go above and beyond for his brothers which make this betrayal a head scratcher when he tells his guys that they were all brothers, and based off this mission he was legit pissed his boys got left behind and his men were loyal enough to try and warn Graves so it could be inferred that Graves was a good commander to his guys so for him to betray his brothers for the guy who left his brothers to die is REALLY a head scratcher. Now if Graves was being forced and a cutscene showing him going to bat for 141 and Alejandro then a LOT of people would appreciate that
I was still sort of holding out hope when I played this, until Graves' name in the subtitles turned red. That's when I knew it was about to go down all over again
pretty cool how shephard is one of the actors from battlefield 3, also the 3 missiles feels close to the 3 portable nukes from battlefield 3 campaign aswell, pretty cool reference.
I enjoy the way they gave development onto Shadow Company, and I hope they become the big bad guy who goes against Mac. They’re my favorite in terms of appearance, name, and purpose. I also wouldn’t mind them changing alliances, but they’re so good at being the scary guys in black armor. The town mission represented it, even though Shadows regretted killing those people.. even betraying 141.
Damn, that thumbnail looked like a screenshot from an live action movie. The video itself looks just as good. Looks like we're finally transitioning out of that "uncanny valley" dip and moving into the "I can't tell if this is real or not" part. Body animations still look a bit artificial though, too smooth I mean. Once the action started it kinda broke my disbelieve a little bit. Then the actual gameplay still looks like a video game. But it's all still impressive.
if you use subtitles, both with graves (blue for friendly) and with shepard (gold for command), as the convo shows them turning on you, you can see it turn to red for an enemy talking. not super important, but i thought it was a nice touch.
Much like in Cold War if you select Duga instead of Solovetsky. Though, I did see a reply about it happening in MW2019. I don't know if that is true or not.
This betrayal was so forced and unnecesary graves was a good character to have around and seemed out of character in contrast to how he treats his own troops and 141 earlier in the game, he was being a dick for no reason.
I don’t really get why people treat Graves like he’s a villain. He pretty much has to follow the orders of his superiors - if he tries to go against Sheperd and other superiors, he and his men go down too. No choice imo.

When they looked into the mask so they speculated that they changed it because ghost never really had a face and that fans would hate that alex would've been ghost and that alex and ghodt should just stay separate characters
Yeah i thought it was him until playing
Honestly it's an unexpected betrayal but it wasn't heartbreaking/tearjerking as the original
The original wasn’t tearjerking it was more shocking than that
They're saving Alex for that.
maybe because in the original we didnt know sheperd is going to betray 141. I didnt see that coming until he pulled a magnum on roach and ghost.
That's probably because we already know Sheperd is going to betray us
You could tell Graves cared about his men even if it doesn’t seem like it sometimes. You could tell he really wanted to call in reinforcements to help the escort unit but Shepard prevented him.
I’m very nostalgia bias, so I’m just curious to why they changed a lot of the voice actors ? Like I grew up with the og MW and haven’t played any of the new ones. so I’m thinking on buying this one and the first so wondering if it’s worth it ?
@@MortisDebates trust me, new voice actors don’t change gameplay
@@MortisDebates It's absolutely worth it. Nostalgia or not, new MW2 has a different, otherwise feel to it. It's difficult to explain.
I've grinded the campaign for 8+ hours a day a few days now. I grew up with CoD4 and OG MW2 back a decade ago, so it's not like I just say it because I can. The new MW2 simply has another type of nostalgia with a different perspective on it. I'll save you the lecture, but if you're considering it then don't hesitate.
@@MortisDebates Worth it
I really love the way Shadow Company and Graves were characterized in the campaign and I was honestly hoping they wouldn’t betray us.
Same feeling ... Graves turning heel felt forced in by the writers for some reason.
Yup yup
Hated the way they make him not regret his actions, it's just felt off, not feeling like his character at all
that proves kate's point: the cover up is often worse than the crime
I mean he is Shepherd’s lap dog, he listens to every one of his commands
@@Donikin it’s just bad writing. Graves changes in service to the plot. There’s no reason for him to terrorize the civilians other than to make him look like a dick. It would be like Farah using gas because she wants to free Urzikstan when we see that she despises its use.
Man it's INSANE how far graphics have come this looks almost exactly like a live action movie.

That was Roach who was yeeted, not Soap
@@johnbeatz380 Soap would later die of his wounds sustained from Shepherd stabbing him, so he wasn’t wrong
@@dawsynasay4841 Well, actually he survived the stab (thanks to Price and Nikolai), it was Makarov that killed him.
@@SimplyDuker He died because his stab wound opened up when Makarov detonated the bombs in the bell tower. It wasn’t the explosion that injured Soap, it was his stab wound opening back up that killed him. Soap never had time to fully recover due to World War 3 so he still had stitches
@@dawsynasay4841 thank you for having a brain
No matter what universe, never trust Shepherd.
Good points like it
Well said
Man and graves was one my favorite characters in the story I loved him 😭
This betrayal by Shepard feels much more pathetic (character wise) than the other version of him. he did something illegal (with decent intentions allegedly) and it ended up blowing up in his face, and instead of trusting the highly effective multi national spec ops team he's formerly aligned with he turns on them and is ok with graves trying to kill them all because he can't take accountability for his failure and is too proud to ask for help.
@@beatspopo not really, as the saying goes, the coverup is the more damning of the crime.
The gravity of the former is greater than that of the latter, which is why it is seen as more "pathetic", even though both of those cases could be seen either as pathetic or as a cost of war.]
Side note: You mentioned how in CoD 4 MW and MW2, Shepherd lost 30,000. Though that doesn't happen in MWII, Price mentioned in the last mission mentioned how there were about 30,000 people at the Pentagon in D.C. when Soap and Laswell were disarming the missile from Chicago. I thought that was a cool little sneaky Easter egg to point out.

It’s a shame Graves turn was so forced. He actually was like a friend and he did not need to get seize the Mexican base to hide his part in missiles.

I was so happy to have shadow company as allies and I was crushed when they betrayed the 141.
Now if Graves was being forced and a cutscene showing him going to bat for 141 and Alejandro then a LOT of people would appreciate that
This betrayal is a slap in the face to the original, this is executed so poorly
I was still sort of holding out hope when I played this, until Graves' name in the subtitles turned red. That's when I knew it was about to go down all over again
