S&Q Mode vs 60p vs 120p | A7siii Slow Motion Deep Dive

- The Sony a7siii can film 4k 60p and 4k 120p in both a "normal" mode and an S&Q mode. In this video I look at whether there is a noticeable difference in image quality between the two.

thank you so much for this video, i have been using a7siii for 3 years but it surprise me how detail you could go (fun) .... this video is awesome, i will definitely go try out my self. Thank you once again. love from Nepal
Thanks, it's interesting to know that there's a file size and compression difference between the standard and S&Q recording modes. I wonder if this test could be re-done in a scene with much more movement e.g. confetti or falling leaves where the compression might be more obvious and S&Q could be worth it.
I was not happy that Sony abandoned the Slow-Motion buffer trigger available on my 10yo Sony camcorder. With a buffer, when you press the shutter, it only saves the last x seconds of slo-motion, saving a lot of disc space. Also a buffer allows you to wait, a long time if needed, for some action to happen.
5:13 I swear the pouring Waterloo's sharper, but maybe that's just me. Great video
Thanks for this video. I never use S&Q mode because it is practical for me as a wildlife filmmaker to film in 120 fps and slow down in post, and keep the sound. I have wondered if the S&Q mode was very much better? You gave me the answer. Not enough to use it. Thanks again :-)).
Of course! Glad this was able to help!
Hey Riley. My friend and I did actually discus this topics yesterday, so nice timing for your video. In Europe the numbers are: 25p = 140mbps, 50p = 200mbps and 100p = 280mbps. But the interesting thing is, once you change the codec to XAVC S-I 4K. Then the mbps doubles: 25p = 250mbps, and 50p = 500mbps. Of Course 100p is only available in XAVC S 4K.
Oh that’s interesting! I hadn’t considered the PAL numbers, although I know they were different. Yeah thats why I didn’t test the S-I codec in S&Q (plus you need a cf express card which I don’t have).
What is the bit rate of Xavc s-i when filming in 50FPS 4:2:2 10 bit ? Sorry I’m new to using this camera and want to know to match my render settings the best way possible

Why would you prefer to use XAVC HS 4K or XAVC S?
HS has smaller file sizes but is very hard to edit. S has slightly larger file sizes but is easier to edit compared to HS.
That’s cool bro👍👍👍
Interesting topic, Riley! I think the S&Q mode can be confusing. Wish they had that menu sorted out better about frame rates and stuff..
Yeah it’s definitely one of the more confusing S&Q menus and layouts I’ve seen on a camera.
Thanks for great comparison 🙌
I wanted to know if there is a different when you’re using the PP at S&Q and at the normal video mode?!
Amazing. 🎉 thank you for doing this. I was just wondering with my a7siii which I am so happy with
Thanks for this. Was wondering myself - glad someone did the test!
Of course!
Thanks for this I was just about to do a similar test. I shoot surfing and I've found that S&Q XAVC S-I 4K gives me the best quality image for slo motion footage. I think XAVC S-I comes into its own when there's lots of movement. File sizes are huge and you need a CF Express card but the footage is a lot quicker to edit. However... I've recently noticed that autofocus doesn't seem to be as reliable when using S&Q mode. Has anyone else has noticed this?
Hi Riley, thanks for clarifying S&Q,
Thanks for this because I was wondering myself.
Of course!!
Great comparison, TFS, I learned new things today from this, I'll try S&Q next time out for sure vice 4k12. I'm all for less time at the computer LOL
Nice pour over and great video Riley :)
I rented fx3 and fx6
It doesn't eye/face track in 100fps
Is this the case with all fx3 and fx6
I wonder if non-slo mo footage would look better if filmed in S&Q slo mo for the higher bitrate and then sped up in post. Audio could be recorded separately.
I wasn't impressed with my trials of S&Q in camera. Thanks for your work.
Glad it could help!
Great video!!
My only concern is which one is more editable. In other words, if I shoot non-S&Q, I can slow it down in post. But what if I want to speed up a portion of my S&Q footage to match up the sequence frame rate, for example speeding up 30P at 240 slow motion to regular 30P playback, would it affect the image quality negatively?
It shouldn’t have a negative impact on the compression. You would have to test the motion blur, etc to see if you like the way it looks though.
Great comparison 👍
Thanks. This was informative.
I would have loved to see this test with a much different shot as this is not testing the sensor enough. Need some high contrast scenes
Which type of card did you use to shoot these footages? It's Sony V90 or CFexpress??
V90 cards
Hi Riley, I never tried to shoot a video on my a7iii but I'm about to andI will start with S&Q because I also never used Premiere but I also am going to. You said that with s&Q we can't record sound, but can we add it in post? Sorry if it is a stupid question. Also is it possible to record my voice directly to Premiere pro to add to the vídeo' (probably an even more stupid question) but I couldn't find this answer anywhere! Thank you so much in advance1
Hey Anna! You can add sound later in post :) It just won’t be recorded in camera. And I’ve never done that in premiere before but it might be possible. I usually use QuickTime or just record to an audio device and copy those files over separately. Hope that helps!
Not sure if it's too late to ask, but when I recorded 60fps, when it cane to upload it to my computer - it says its 23.976fps??? not sure why
We’re you in S&Q mode? That’s how that mode is intended to work - it slows the footage down in camera 🙂
@@RileyEndicott nvm, I figured out the problem. When I had it in 60fps and then i changed it to 4k - I didnt realize that it turned back to 24fps since theres not such thing for 4k in 60fps for the sony a7 iii
would you use S and Q for wedding hightlights?
If you don't need sound it's a great option.
Really useful thanks
i cant find difference between non S&Q and S&Q...
how about the fast motion? 1fps
There isn’t really a non S&Q way to shoot 1fps so that wouldn’t apply for this test 🙂
What are you talking about? For s and q you get way less bitrate comparred to when shooting in 120p.
Hey man love your videos! I will sub right not but please help us on one thing... I cant shoot 4k 60 even with a really good SSD. Can you help us figure that out? I am willing to pay for a half hour zoom call! seriously lol let me know
Thanks Christian! I bet we can figure it out without you having to pay for a zoom call. What SD card are you using (does it say V30, V60, or V90 on the card?) and what codec are you trying to film in?
@@RileyEndicott I am filming on ninja V. SSD is Samsung 870 Evo Sata 2tb and using the stock enclosure for Ninja V. 4k 60 works for a few minutes then stops and kangaroo appears. How do I avoid footage interruptions?
@@christianzavala4363 If you are seeing the kangaroo I think its a connection issue. My guess is that you need another cable or your SSD isn't secured correctly in the housing. If you can film longer durations of 4K 24 without interruption but not 4k 60 I think its most likely that you need a faster cable.
@@RileyEndicott truth is i have the expensive cable the 60 or 80 dollar one from ninja v lol this is why I cant figure it out.
@@christianzavala4363 I also bought the Atomos Cable wich is expensive, but after trying a KRAMER Cable I didnt have the issue anymore.. Sorry to say that they sell you crappy cables for a high price :/ But buy a good KRAMER cable and you are set :)
S&Q is easier to edit I guess ...
could you also please let us know you instagram.
That’s cool bro👍👍👍
