    As far as I can tell, S&Q is pretty much just the regular 60mbps codec option, but with a flag in the file metadata to play at 1/4th or 1/5th speed (24p or 30p), depending depending on what your base/project frame rate is set to.
    So this results in a slo-mo file with a 12 or 15mbps bitrate (60 Mbps divided by 4 or 5).
    So shooting S&Q should look exactly the same as shooting regular 120p at the 60mbps bitrate, and then reinterpreting it to slo-mo.
    Obviously 100mbps is going to be better quality, especially if you need to push the file around in post.

      Al I appreciate your feedback and when you break down the Mbps like that with the 60 divided by 4 or 5, it's like the lightbulb goes off in my head! I did research on reddit and here on youtube and every was doing side by side comparisons with no grades and or picture profiles besides standard or movie mode. Now that you have me super curious I think I might try these out with both slog2 and cine4 as well as grading them to see the overall result. Thanks again for the info bro!

      That’s exactly what I said when I read/saw this on my A7Riii. I literally said “no way” and in 3 seconds, thought.... That must be divided by normal 60mbps output divided by the “5” in 5X playback. How does no one get this!? Laughed out loud about a reviewer actually thinking it was actually 12 mbps.🤦‍♂️.
      It’s simply 60mbps no audio formatted for output at 24.

    Well, I think you can see a visible difference in contrast and color-separation. That could come from grading or different camera-settings, but the 100 Mbps always looks a bit more stable, when it comes to grading. I use S&Q all the time and haven't had any issues (apart from the missing Face- and Eye-AF) so far though.

    So from my experience the s&q @ 120fps is 12mbps and manual 120fps is 20mbps...take 20 x 5 = the 100mbps... so it’s not technically 12mbps versus 100mbps..make sense? It’s 12 versus 20 due to the 5 times slow mo..

    It's almost the same because when you shoot at 120 fps at 100Mb/s than in post you will slow it down to 24 or 25 fps. So you have to divide the 100Mb/s also. Simple math ( rule of three) will give you 20Mb/s. It's slightly better than q&s 12Mb/s.

    • @haidaphotography
      @haidaphotography 4 года назад +1

      And when you did the math correct, you minus the audio as well, than you have your 12Mb/s 😉
      S&Q is great!

  • @hckyrules
    @hckyrules 4 года назад

    Late comment, however it could bring something to the table. Between S&Q and non-S&Q footage I definitely see a lot of softness in the S&Q mode:
    Perhaps displays now bring out that compression difference a lot more?
    As viewed from my iPhone 11 Pro Max, opposed to other display units like the iPhone 7 Plus and my generic desktop monitor, you can definitely see the lower quality of S&Q in your video. Not even needing to do pixel peaking, the image is more washed out and a lot less sharp. Older display units don’t bring that difference out as much.

  • @rarshibond
    @rarshibond 6 лет назад +11

    Pretty sure that 100mbs makes a difference when doing heavy grading. You should be able push and pull the image a lot more.

      Mr. Bond that’s exactly what I found out when I tested it. They both looked similar out of the camera, but when you start to color correct, color grade, speed ramp etc the s&q doesn’t hold up well. As far as for timelapses, I just bought the intervolameter for $25.

      The only problem, it isn't 100vs12 mbit in this case.
      100mbit in normal mode 120fps is ~0,83mbit per frame and in SQ 12mbit mode 0,5mbit per frame which is a miniscule difference of 100mbit normal vs 60mbit SQ. And consider the sound sharing that 100mbit data in normal mode.
      I am stunned how bad are people with math today :(

  • @nyambe
    @nyambe 6 лет назад

    Nice video. 4 seconds of S&Q slow motion @12mb is actually 1 second of 120@100mb. So it makes senses. 4 * 12mb = 48. You are comparing a 100mb to a 50mb at this point. Unless you are color grading heavily or recovering highlights and shadows there should be very little differences

    • @ImJasonAnthony
      @ImJasonAnthony 6 лет назад +1

      I legit just found this out after searching all over reddit and watching other youtube channels. Apparently S&Q slows 120fps down 5 times at 24fps so when you divide it thats where the 12mbps comes in. Everyone who I've seen do comparison tests including Miguel Quiles who is a sony ambassador never mentioned and when he did the testing he did the same as I did haha. I'm going to test heavikly graded footage and see if the S&Q footage breaks down. I appreciate your input bro!

    Maybe I'm doing something wrong but s&q is locked at a shutter speed of 125 for me - I can not shoot at 250 like I can with regular 120 - are we not supposed to have a shutter speed double our fps in most situations?
