I like how in the original Doom, each episode boss "downgrades" to regular, albeit rare, status in the following episodes. Like you run across Barons throughout Episode 2. But I didn't realize that when I first played Episode 3, so I got to to the exit of Warrens, and... Bam! Rocket right to the face. Of course, now the Cyberdemon is much easier for me to deal with because I can circlestrafe.
Thagomizer One of my favorite things about the map, actually. Up until E2M8, the Barons are the most powerful enemy you've faced. They were the bosses of Episode 1 and appear sparingly through the Episode 2 maps. Then you come to the tower, and see your most powerful foe strung up and hung without any indication of a fair fight. You just KNOW you're about to face something beyond powerful on the other side. One of the reasons I really like the original Doom so much, it had a way of telling a story without any cutscenes, dialog, or anything like that.
They're not crucified, they're hanging by their horns, which is really funny imo... Love how at the beginning you were on a normal, human made base, with only a few zombies and imps, and, as you progress, you start to see hanging corpses, inverted crosses, pools of blood and stuff like that... made me understand what was going on even when i was a kid and didn't understood a single word in english
those barons on the walls... i always have assumed that the cyberdemon tortured them in frustration (rippin of their limbs, because it have lost its leg and arm, and have cybernetic prostetic now) and then killed them and hanged them on the wall.

E2M2: Containment Area 1. E2M8: Tower Of Babel I honestly just love Episode 2, I dont know why, but ever since I first played DOOM and even if I sucked at the game, I really liked almost all the maps on it (Except the boring and disappointing secret level). i know its maps are too long or big sometimes, but that just feels like a plus most of the time to me, it has my 2 favorite levels in the game, and Im also really glad to hear that your opinion of it has improved over the years (and maybe its not your least favorite now). The only thing I could somewhat criticize about this map is the aesthetic, its not bad or anything like that, and there are still some really cool looking parts (The end of Deimos Lab is especially amazing with the screaming wall of faces and all that) but it does ultimately feel inferior to how Episode 1 and 3 look. Still, Episode 2 is easily my favorite one in Ultimate Doom, and I feel like its kind of underrated most of the time.
I first played this map in 1994 on a 386 PC running adlib board for music and pc speaker for the sound fx. Cyberdemon makes a ridículous screeching noise as he walks which made my 12 year old self jump and shake and be afraid of whatever the hell was making that noise that I'd have to encounter when leaving the first room. Probably the most memorable boss fight in my teen gamer years. Sweet memories.

Just one thing, you might have wanted to mention that vanilla Doom doesn't include Lost Souls in the kill count. Also, from a pistol start, you have to Rocket duel anyway because this map doesn't give you a Plasma Gun.
My favourite level from Episode 2 was the Containment Area. It's soundtrack was one of my favourites (along with E2M4, E2M3, the first two levels, E1M7 and this mission) and going through the maze area punching all the imps with the Berserk was as fun as hell.

I wonder why the demons were building the Tower of Babel throughout the second episode. You'd think they would have had ample time to build it since they made Deimos disappear prior to episode 1.
Fun mytholgical fact about Phobos & Deimos. Deimos is the personification of dread and terror in Greek mythology. He was a son of Ares and Aphrodite, and the twin brother of Phobos. Deimos served to represent the feelings of dread and terror that befell those before a battle, while Phobos is the personification of fear and panic in Greek mythology.

In e2m9 I use the chainsaw. It is difficult because you have to separete one baron of hell or two to infight with the cacodemons. I really enjoy this episode.
Oh...Interesting. Very interesting. Are there any other interesting facts and things about DooM? I played it years ago, all is forgotten, now i play it again.
It seems that Those Barons became Lost Souls or something as a punishment for not destroying the DOOM Marine. and their husks are now doors. Thanks to the Cyberdemon!
BigMacDavis, since I couldn't manage the strafe left and right technique or circle strafe (I played it on my own, without any tips, so I developed my own strategies), the way I beat the cyberdemon was to get him to be on one side of those big blocks next to the main structure (there's just a little room between the block and the main building). So from there, I back away just a bit to get our of his rocket splash range, and fire rockets at the crevice, which is too narrow for the rocket to go through. The monster takes enough splash damage that it eventually dies. Just for giggles, I also use the chain gun and shotgun there, too. If the cyberdemon decides to come around the block to get me, I just give ground and run to the next block, and go through it again. That's how you can beat the level even if you stink at strafing! And I have a question: If I kill the cyberdemon yet leave one of the lost souls still living, then the game goes on? I never thought of that. Maybe I'll try to see that happen myself. Keep making Doom videos, Mac. You're so very entertaining!
That's a very good strategy. But I do have to say that cyberdemons do not take splash damage, so you're probably hitting him directly with the rockets, or you can't do any damage to him. Secondly, to answer your question, once you defeat the cyberdemon, the map automatically ends, even if you didn't kill a single lost soul.
The game only had one artist, so the proportions might be a bit off, but I think it was meant to show Deimos is so tiny in comparison to the vastness of Hell. But it does look like an island.
To defeat the cyberdemon, shoot at it until it dies.

It seems that Those Barons became Lost Souls or something as a punishment for not destroying the DOOM Marine. and their husks are now doors. Thanks to the Cyberdemon!
I never thought of that before, that's a really good observation.
@@BigMacDavis after all, that is probably the point of a Lost Souls, they're Lost, corrupted Souls that try to hurt the Doom Marine.
Let Loose your volley of death cyberdemon. You struggle in vain.
Indeed. It's a battle he cannot win.
Good explanation man!
This level is awesome 👍
I have heard from someone that its slowly built but always never seen that myself.
If you're having difficulty I recommend shooting the plasma gun and hiding around corners
P.S. Episode 1 is still my favorite!
How do I kill the cyberdemon? I need a pro tip
Strafing is the best key.
I thought it was shooting at it until it dies, but oh well
@@thewayfayer3268 1. Shoot at it until it dies
2. Don't let it hit you
huh wierd the veesion of doom i'm playing doesn't count lost souls as required kills
Nope, your version doesn't. But my version does. It's weird.
Are you planning to do doom 2?
but why does deimos look like an island
The game only had one artist, so the proportions might be a bit off, but I think it was meant to show Deimos is so tiny in comparison to the vastness of Hell. But it does look like an island.
@@BigMacDavis ah ok !
episode 4 is a prequel to hell on earth
why do u think the demons are building the tower of babel?
On the doom 3 bfg edition the tower doesnt get fully grown which is awful
