I thought Thy Flesh Consumed would have prepared me adequately for No Rest For The Living on Nightmare. I was sorely mistaken. I'll say the worst levels were E4M2 and E4M6. Never again.
episode 4 is definitely the stinkiest commercial doom wad, green marble vomit hell and wooden sensory deprivation complexes, at the very least plutonia has some good looking levels and tnt had a decent soundtrack
@@gackmcshite4724 I can live with Episode 4 not being canon, as long as TNT and Plutonia aren't canon either (they just really don't make much sense after Doom 2 where Hell was supposed to be wrecked). Same for Doom 3, that game just doesn't fit into the continuity either
The PlayStation port of DooM actually made the Cyberdemon scary again. Hearing his roar followed by those heavy, very bassy footsteps was nerve-wracking as you could hear them get louder and louder. Those sound alterations alone made him much more threatening and tense.

I never realized that the Cyberdemon shoots the rockets of his crotch. I usually use the BFG (or in this map) rocket him while hiding as a coward. This method looks fun, I must try it
i love this level ngl. it was always satisfying to run around and shoot rockets and the cyberdemon. the lost soul strat is fun too ngl. because you are legit humiliating a giant demon that has a rocket arm
The Shores of Hell is my favorite episode in Doom. Tom Hall's (for its time) realistic level design with Sandy Petersen's hellish makeover creates a very unique atmosphere.
Little did Decino realize that the seemingly harmless Lost Soul he left alive would eventually rally the forces of Hell and lead them to victory against humankind.
Ha, I knew it! Pacifist (sort of) E2M8 - well done :) We may joke about this map nowadays, but it was pretty rough when playing the game for the first time. That is why Episode 2 was actually the last one I beat as a kid - that Cyberdemon really, really scared me. And he made horrible noises when playing the game with PC Speaker sounds.
Makes sense, considering The Shores of Hell was originally episode 3, and Inferno was episode 2, so it explains why it's actually harder. Idk why they ended up changing them around.

That's a neat way to take advantage of Nightmare mechanics for a bit of fun. The fast Lost Souls never stop charging, and the turret Cyberdemon doesn't walk around much and is therefore slow to change targets & swat them away. Thus: the king of the demons slain by being nibbled away at by the lowest of his kind. Poetic.
Ngl i think a whole episode about doomguy climbing an Tower of babel would be Really cool as an megawad, maybe even with custom monsters like angels and shit

Tower of Babel was my favorite map as a kid, the cyberdemon is my favorite enemy of the whole doom series; quite strange that i did not remember about 90% of this episode though

This was a fun one in Nightmare Mode because seeing CyberDemon here for the 1st time ever with Lost Souls is fun to play around. Episode 2 is okay at best which I still like regardless. Episode 3 is I think everyone's favorite so this should be fun as well. Can't wait to see you do more of this next time. 😄

As a kid, I defeated this Cyberdemon with a regular shotgun and thought that was something badass. You could almost count this as a 'pacifist' run LMAO. Absolutely bonkers!

Although I will say finishing him off with a single "pew" was still pretty Epic(tm) after how silly was everything preceding it. I wonder if you regretted not picking up the launcher when that lost soul survived at the end...

Nice, from what I heard this map was beaten pacifist only relatively recently. Turns out it's actually easier to do on Nightmare because the lost souls charge much more often, so you don't actually have to immobilize the cyberdemon
@@decino I thought that he would retarget anyway, since he did so with 3 of the lost souls anyway, so I assumed there was just some number of hits/damage he would take before he retargeted. Your shooting him with the pistol didn't stop him from retargeting eventually, so I assumed it didn't really matter

The Shores of Hell is actually a damn good episode IMO. Sure it's got a couple of clunkers (Refinery and Fortress of Mystery. Plus Command Center is a little weak) but a few of the other maps outshine Knee Deep in the Dead for me. Deimos Lab and Halls of the Damned in particular manage to have plenty of interesting variety to them, with a great feeling of progression without being too wonky and disjointed. That sense of corrupted tech-base seemed to work better than the other ends of the spectrum (plain techbase of KDitD or the attempt at full-on hellscape of Inferno). It's got that unsettling vibe alongside a greater feeling of exploration. Sure KDitD is more consistently decent and Inferno is more consistently wonky (with occasional flashes of brilliance) but Shores of Hell managed to be generally fairly good with a good helping of genius in parts.

cyberden imo was way more impactful. it made the cyberdemon more of a regular fight than a scary bossfight enemy.

The cool thing about Nightmare is that you can get the Baron of Hell and the Cacodemon to kill the Spider Mastermind too as they resurrect forever.

It's not easier as this method requires you to shoot the Cyberdemon to ensure it doesn't infight the Lost Souls. That's against the pacifist ruleset.

It does matter, shooting him resets the infighting threshold. Without shooting he would retaliate against Lost Souls immediately.

No, the threshold only resets when the threshold is zero, so eventually it will retaliate no matter how often you shoot him.
