film shows: memorial service for victims of klm tenerife aircrash victims held in airport hangar; mourners, coffins, choir singing hymn
lead in: in holland, a memorial service was held wednesday (april 6th) for the victims of the worst air-disaster the world has ever known: the head-on collision of two jumbo jets in the canary islands, last week (march 27th).
the multi-denominational service was conducted -- aptly enough - in an aircraft hangar at amsterdam's schiphol airport.
commentary: the cold, echoing vastness of hangar 11 seemed a fitting place to say a last farewell to the dutch victims of the crash. all 235 passengers and 14 crew members on board the klm jumbo died.
    (up sound for hymn)
to the sound of the klm male choir singing "beati mortui" by mende issohn-bartholdy, mourners reflected on the disaster, the magnitude of which was hard to fathom -- even when presented with the proof: 249 coffins, drawn up in rows in this enormous hall.
    (up sound)
the victims were for the most part holiday-makers. among the coffins here were the remains of 25 children and six babies.
the final blame for the crash is hard to pinpoint. it seems to have been caused by a number of contributing factors: fog, misunderstandings between crews and traffic control, and extra-heavy traffic at tenerife airport caused by the explosion of a bomb at las palmas some miles away.
mourners here did spare a thought, however, for the passengers on board the pan am plane, many of whom were also killed in the crash.

The disaster itself had several key factors at the time of the crash (5p.m local time)
(1)- As Pan Am Flight 1736 taxiied out onto the runway, Los Rodeos Airport’s position made it vulnerable to fog banks. One covered the airport at that moment, reducing visibility to 500m.
(2)- Controller inexperience soon lead to them issuing the Pan Am 747 orders to turn off the runway at the 3rd taxiway. The problem is that to get there a 138 degree turn had to be made and another 138 degree turn to get back on the main taxiway: an impossibility.
(3)- When ATC relayed this message: “OK, standby for take-off. I will call you.” the Pan Am crew relayed their warning message at the same time, which left only the “OK” part audible.
But for all those problems, one factor is forever labelled as the trigger of the collision: Captain Jacob Veldhyuzen van Zanten started the take-off roll of his plane (by now heavy with 55 tons of fuel) with NO permission to do so.

583 Fatalities all due to Captain Jacob Van Zanten's wanting to get the job done before his duty time runs out. He was told to stay put but he decides to take off because he thought he had clearance for take-off when in fact he is NOT cleared for take off. When investigators try to figure out why would an experienced pilot violate this fundamental rule. Of course it the duty time and most of his time was training pilots and future captains in the simulator but the problem is that KLM's flight simulators DO NOT have air traffic control and plus Captain Van Zanten's face is everywhere: in KLM brochures, flyers, billboards you name it, his face is everywhere in KLM. I'll bet after this accident KLM's reputation is completely destroyed because the company's face is dead, they've lost a lot of money when they accepted responsibility. Lot's of people would avoid flying KLM.

Yes. I've read that identification of the Dutch victims were much easier than the American victims, because their medical records (such as dental records) are more complete.
