Absolutely. 1055 and 1075 get looked down on, but properly heat treated their toughness is superb. Easy to sharpen as well. For chopping type things like axes and machetes, Id take those two steels over 1095 any day.
@@Jo_Blo On paper, maybe. But in practice it seems like these 'low grade' spring steels out-perform everything that's supposed to be better like 3V and so on. Joe really is showing what works in the real world and doesn't necessarily just look good on a zknives spreadsheet.
End of Summer I made a deal and got two of these for $25. I am glad to know that it appears I made a good purchase, should need ever arise. This was great!!!
It's like a Tomahawk it's is a Friction fit....they made it so it can come of the Wood Handle..why well the if the Handle was damaged or needed replaced Quickly...also to sharpen the blade more easily....
I haven't had the chance to test mine yet so this was awesome to see. I'm okay with a handle being destroyed because they're easily replaced. I was shocked that the head did so well against the iron pipe
Joe, it's supposed to be loose, but with a better friction fit. The set screw will just fuck up the handle if the fit isn't good to begin with. Just like many axes don't come sharp and need work, friction fit hawks need to have the handle formed to get a tight friction fit - this is standard.
Hitting that metal pole sounds like it was doing more damage to you than the axe. Also considering that the axe is a tomahawk, I would be willing to forgive the head coming loose because it is an intentional feature rather than a malfunction.
That is one great axe, I was thinking about getting the trail hawk, and you've helped me decide,, 👍👍 these cold steel hawks seem very well made, and great value for money,, All the best my friend,, 🪓🪓🪓
I refused tomahawks of cold steel, the steel of the head is soft, but the hickory handle is excellent, especially if wrapped with tape for hockey sticks. the test is the best. burn on.
Excellent review. Thank you JOE X for showing the qualities of the Cold Steel Axe. Their toughness and manageable cost make a great tool/weapon for almost anyone. They are usually great throwers as well.
Another great Joe X video. 1055 steel is the same steel Estwing uses in all its integral handle hammers and axes. Tough stuff for striking implements. But too low in carbon for fine knives.
Joe, I think you have become a specialist in cars as well, especially in the quality of sheet metal. You should share wich one has the better metal. 😉 Good job my friend, again!!! 👏💪🍺💪👏
You don't use a screw on the slip fit design. That's only for people who have no idea how to make it tight. You need to sand the handle until it fits the eye tightly. Almost all CS tomahawks need this procedure. And this one also ofcourse. ZEUKI1 who calls himself now Scablands Scavenger has great video's on how to make the head handle tight.
I see the video two times. It performs so good that I had to see it twice. Amazing test; see forward to see more cold steel axes tested by joe - the ultimate tester.
Great test. It really shows the worth of a good axe. I have the smaller Viking hawk and chopped a 3" tree branch off with it. It never broke. I had to wrench it from the branch a few times by the handle and once it supported me (+200 pounds) when the ladder slipped. Hickory is some tough wood. Thanks again for the testing of this axe. Take Care and Stay Safe.
8 seconds in. Was considering buying this axe. Like my indecision between tanto lite and outdoor lite by CS, I'll simply go off of how much bullshit it takes before breaking. The "or not" in the title raised my eyebrows
Wow! A nice and tough long axe! And awesome wood handle! I love Hickory handles, bought a butcher’s knife with Hickory handle some months ago, just to lay it on the kitchen sideboard and watching it 😂🍻 The AUG does the job 🍻
Not bad. Being as i was born & raised in Tennessee Im rather fond of hickory handles. I grew up w/ the guy whos family owned the biggest hickory tool handle factory in TN as a matter of fact. If its cut right one can make a handle that will take even more flex than that one did.
Your kids are going to be late for soccer practice now that you destroyed the little red van😆. This little axe now is on my list didn’t disappoint at all.👍🏼
Now you know how it feels to be a viking chopping away at an Iron clad door ! Cool looking mini-van you destroyed, must be European, I'm in U.S. Thought about buying one of these but couldn't figure out what I would use it for. Now reconsidering. If Joe proof then I need it !!
Ok Joe another outstanding video. That's one hell of a piece of equipment. Now I gotta buy something else. Oh well it takes your punishment then I'm buying. Take care my friend
Yeah majority of people I see always end up swapping the handles for something more comfortable but yeah I own the brother to that Viking axe and it's awesome to see what abuse it can take keep up the good work
I got this for my brother in law. strip it, ground the edge blued the head, removed the set screw, pressure mounted the head on stripped handle that I added burned runes and linseed oil. And voila magnifique
Great video my friend. Hopefully get to see you test some of Vic Lin's - Work Tuff Gear or Shany Amran's Shade Indonesia knives someday. They are excellent knives with awesome heat treat. But with your destruction tests I don't know.
Norse axes did not normally have that long of a "beard". warriors wanted enough downward sweep so they cold hook shields, etc but not so much that they could not disengage if someone hooked the axe. That long beard is more typical of a later boat builders' axe.
1055 with Cold Steel's heat treat has consistently impressed me for over 15 years and their axes and tomahawks are the best you can possibly buy even if price were not a factor. I have Gransfors Bruks hatchets that I never use because Cold Steel tomahawks are just plain better in almost every way.

Excellent choice of steel. And seems like good heat treatment. Toughness aficionados, this is the carbon steel to go for.
it is a good one for sure!
Cold steel is very good with their heat treats and edge grinds. I have 1, out of multiple CS knives that has a off center edge grind. 👍
