JTR’s M-Wave setup had subs attached to each channel for full range and they had LFE subs. What you are doing makes sense based on my experience. I think it was Lucas’ THX that set the standard of 5 identical speakers crossed over to the sub at 80Hz. Personally, I like the full range bed layer approach and am actively working to move in that direction myself. Atmos is ok, but I think a really great bed layer is 80% of the experience.
100% agree. Atmos is good but the bed layer is where it’s at and I think is the reason why I prefer IMAX over Dolby Cinema. IMAX is focused on dynamics and Dolby cinema leans more on 3D immersion. impact in terms of tactile bass in imax. My local Dolby cinema uses butt kickers in the seats comes across somewhat bloated vs slam.

We have similar speakers somewhat... I've got ML Odyssey which have plenty of bass, Theater center, Arius rear. I have 2 Velodyne dd12 for music and a pb16, Klipsch rsw 15, and tactile transducers for movies. I would highly recommend ported subs for shaking things and people lol. Sealed for music except Trap and Amapiano genres. Those need ported bass.

To my ears sealed subs are easier to blend with music for some reason and I always felt that even though ported play louder they have a sharp rolloff at certain frequencies. I tried loving ported subs but kept going back to sealed. Just my taste. 😀

Just so you are aware, Martin Logan speakers are less dependent on room treatment because they have a controlled dispersion pattern of 30 degrees horizontal which means you get less wall, ceiling’ and floor reflection versus dynamic driver speakers. Don’t forget furnishings also acts as acoustics properties. I also have an area rug too which helps. Believe or not but The stacked subwoofers also acts as active bass traps by virtue of stacking them in the corners😀

@@nathaneldogo it’s depends on the application. Ported subs tends to play louder but are susceptible to chuffing/port noise when pushed too hard. They tend to roll off faster than sealed . I find that Sealed subs are easier to blend with speakers especially for music and seems to stay away from the mids. If your undecided you could opt for subs that come with port plus so you can tune them.

Your preference is above everyone's so this is just my take. I would cross at 80hz due to those subs in the towers being smaller than the cones in the subwoofers. They can never play as low as the subwoofers. You're adding subs and choking them off. You want your towers to focus on midrange due to them being only effects channels with home theater. Also bass shakers will cover the low to where those sealed subs can't go. I would sell all of those and just go ported if you're looking got SPL.

As I have stated, I never liked crossing all at 80hz. to my ears bass becomes static without movement and overall sound is less dynamic when I AB the settings. The towers won’t do much in terms of bass and that is why they each have subs.. Also effects channels do handle bass depending on how sound was mixed. I believe this setup allows for effortless bass that is dynamic and tactile since bass duties are split albeit the dual stacks does the heavy lifting from 40hz down. Also don’t like ported subs. While they might play louder they have a faster roll off bs sealed. Sealed to my ears blends best with music and are faster and don’t suffer from chuffing.
I have no mid bass issues. I prefer bass movement that I can literally feel the movement through out my space that’s what multi subs in my setup presents. Using subs purely for LFE does not do that. Its a preference I like the best vs what I use to do. I tried both and prefer what I’m doing now and have been for many many years but thanks for your suggestion though
Dolby designed surround sound for full range to each channel so this set-up is more akin to the original guidelines. Bass Management to Mono bass is not really part of the Dolby specification. I do agree with you often with many rooms integration is challenging with multiple full range channels so approaches like the 4 subwoofers distributed around the room like Harman studies tend to be easier to integrate but not always. While low frequency bass is omi-directional spherical wave there could well be be something said for presence effects (feeling of pressure) coming from Subwoofers in surround locations. Also Truman..... Harman is fairly old, have you heard of Waveforming, you can use front and rear arrays of Subwoofers to create a planar wave from front to back effectively steer it down the room and eliminate the effect room modes and nodes. There are very clever techniques being worked on which can rival and beat the 4 sub methods goals (Output and flat response over a defined seating area). Currently it is very high end processors can to do this but it is interesting to see new techniques coming up.

The cost of entry is high but you will never have to buy another processor when the latest and greatest is codecs are released since it is software based. @@micb3rd time alignment is based on line level signals from there respective speaker channel and I’m bypassing the subs LFE. The subs are calibrated in parallel with the speakers so time alignment would be based on those measurements. The dual stacks are time aligned to the two LFE channels that are on my processor.

The subs themselves range are around 150hz to 22hz handling but the 22hz is irrelevant since they are being fed the rolled off signal and won’t play higher than 100-150 hz. Then the dual stack subs would handle everything from 40hz to 16hz. The speakers are identified as large but are rolled off at 40hz so not technically full range as in 20khz to 20hz.

The supplement subs are augmenting your "small" speakers into "large" speakers. Kind of like what a rel 3d setup is.
@@sammy10001I have my LFE set to LFE+mains and LPF set to 120hz. So the LFE subs will also get some of the mains mixed in down to 40hz that are then rolled off to the LFE subs. The rest of the speakers also rolled of at 40 hz. If I set bass to lfe only then the speakers would received full band signal which I do not want. Again the speakers are rolled off at 40hz to the subs that are set as lfe+mains and the subs that augments the speakers receives the rolled off signals.

I have experiementes with different settings on my processor and never like the conventional 80hz crossed over because I had subs on each channel. If you look up the McIntosh house of sound in one of the video they described this same setup that I have and I can tell you the sound stage in much more enveloping with the bass movement that can only be achieved with multiple subs mated to the speaker channels.

I feel sorry for your home's foundation 🥲. Clean setup though! Initially I didn't understand why you would need this much subwoofers, however when you said that you feel a sense of bass movement when watching a movie, I get it. I've never experienced bass imaging other than IMAX speakers with full range capability. My lowly 3 subs cries in terror.
lol I sometimes worry about my foundation😊. But joking aside. I have lots of subs but they blended in so not only do I get smooth bass response, I also get movement. I AB tested the setup by running the speakers with 80hz crossover and while that was good I notice the bass seemed static and lacked movement. The movement adds another level of envelopment. Also three subs is good too. I remember when I only had one sub. Two subs should be the minimum. Appreciate your comments.

@@darrellhodges3668 you are forgetting that my living room opens up to the kitchen dining room and stair case to the 2nd level of my home so you have to include those areas in sqft as it is not sealed off. Aside from that point the 15 subs are not all playing LFE only the SVS stacks. The other subs play down to 40hz and the stacks play down to at least 16hz. The sound is tailored and creates bass movement in the room and in my experience this setup gives that impression. This makes movies much more cinematic vs feeling like I’m in a home theater if that makes sense. At the end of the day this is something you would have to experience vs me explaining to really understand the concept. Mcintosh Josue of sounds in NY does it this way. They offer free tours if you ever go to NY and hear for yourself.

I appreciate your observation but let’s correct the points you made here the center channel sits inside that has has been acoustically treated to prevent reflections. It is also on a swivel and is angled towards our ears based on the seating distance and reclining positions The room itself is acoustically treated by virtue of having furniture and a rug. Additionally Martin Logan’s has narrow dispersion and is least affected by the room. The stacked subwoofers believe it or not also acts as an active bass trap. So overall I am happy with the room and setup. I would discerned the room as not dead sounding but not too lively but a happy medium. We can always hear dialog and bass is tactile when it should. As you can see this is a living room that serves dual purpose as I do not a have a dedicated theater room. But none the less I’m 200% happy with how it sounds for music and movies.

Harmon did an in-depth study and found four sub locations is all you need (although having multiple stacked subs is definitely better)

Get bass shakers and save a lot of money. Now I can turn my subs down and get better tactile response

It is also on a swivel and is angled towards our ears based on the seating distance and reclining positions The room itself is acoustically treated by virtue of having furniture and a rug. Additionally Martin Logan’s has narrow dispersion and is least affected by the room. The stacked subwoofers believe it or not also acts as an active bass trap. So overall I am happy with the room and setup. I would discerned the room as not dead sounding but not too lively but a happy medium. We can always hear dialog and bass is tactile when it should. As you can see this is a living room that serves dual purpose as I do not a have a dedicated theater room. But none the less I’m 200% happy with how it sounds for music and movies.
@@ProfoundAV-123 soud treatet placement for the center?? that tells me you dont get, 1 bit about home theater!! the center most be clere on all sites, of the front. so the sound can spred free!! and dont hit anything before playing into the room!! and to have furniture is not room treatment, its just furniture and things! room treatment, is to remove dead sounding spaces... and the sub stacking is awesome, but rest of the speakers are not placed good.. and by having furniture random in the room.. there is just bigger chance, for sound to not do the right thing. or move the right way.. so againg you have maybe been, in som sound studio thing for 200years.. but home theather has shit to do with recording studio
@@tuemose22 you’re preaching to the choir here. I do not have a dedicated room for a theater and the living room serves dual purposes. Again the furniture, rug, curtains, plants acts as room treatment vs no furniture at all. We are not putting up room treatment and speakers placed as best within the space. The sound in this room is phenomenal so we will agree to disagree. 🙏
