That whole opening sequence was very Time Crisis. Enemies that can't shoot standing in front of cover going down with one bullet each regardless of where they get hit
I can tell what's happening. The action is fluid and well drawn with correct anatomy. It doesn't rely on extreme close-ups and dropping frames to give the illusion of speed. Basically, yes, this is exactly like when anime was at its pinnacle, back in the mid to late 90s.
Very true. In today's world of high-tech weapons, someone using an old-school revolver is either crazy, highly skilled, or has another edge you don't know about. Either way, you're in trouble. ANd Ryo is definitely all 3.
Are they suggesting that the storming of the mansion was done without killing anyone, or just that the main protag didn't kill anyone? Cuz anyone hit by the weapons the other two were carrying definitely died. Badass scene, 80s AF.
I was thinking the same as you, and I am convinced that only the MC didn't kill anyone. I can accept that he has such good aim that he can always shot non-lethally, it is ridiculous but it is anime this is basic, but if those two didn't kill anyone I call bullshit.
Yea you can't aim for arms and shoulders when your being shot at, your reaction time would be 1/100th of your opponents if you tried so even if you were a expedition shooter you'd still get tagged.
Unfortunately, this is a shame to the original 80s style illustration and animation, literally nothing to do with it, can't compare with this 2019 production, to me this looks more like a fan made thing than anything else, especially given the catastrophic illustrations in the beginning of the vid, absolute catastrophe :/ the only reason why i'm saying this is because I highly appreciated the very high quality work on the original, but if you like these, then great, but just saying...
Ryo is shoot to disarm guy. He was always a shoot to kill guy, right up to avenging Hideyuki Makimura. After that, Hideyuki's younger sister, Kaori Makimura joined Ryo as his partner and he had a change of heart, from shooting to kill, to shooting to disarm. The anime doesn't even show it, but in the manga while learning to be the City Hunter, Kaori has a break down because of too much death and destruction.

This movie manage to keep its 1980 vibe or feel intact better than modern installment of Miami Vice (it freaking sucks and I already know it sucks just by watching its opening scene)
That's mostly because choreography is hard if that doesn't happen. The good guy can't take any clean hits or any semblance of believability goes out the window, and the bad guy isn't likely to do much that doesn't involve the weapon. So basically you're reduced to having either a goofy looking action scene where a character dodges knife attacks for three minutes, an action scene where the person with a weapon is disabled quickly, or you spend three times as much on that action scene to show an actual struggle to get control of the weapon.
Anime should really go back to having more fights like this. Just realistic, simple, two people brawling with legit and realistic martial arts and barely any talking..It just looks so much better and entertaining than two dude destroying cities with punches and explosions everywhere while also powering up nonstop and talking about stupid shit every 20 seconds or after every couple of attacks
