- This had to be done! In this video we compare the tracking abilities of the Skydio 2 and the DJI Air 3. With the Air 3 DJI really stepped up their game with APAS 5.0 and ActiveTrack. The Skydio 2 has always been the undisputed king of tracking and obstacle avoidance. I had both drones track me while riding my Engwe EP2 eBike. Check out this head-to-head shootout of two amazing drones!

Skydio focused on tracking, DJI focused on everything else... range, image quality, flight time, features, etc.
Exactly, if had to have only one it would be the Air 3!
@IdahoQuadcopter Yup! If I were some big time RUclipsr who's channel revolved around me filming myself hiking, biking, etc, then the Skydio 2 is my pick for sure. I am not. So I'd pick the Air 3 as well. Everything but tracking is much better than the Skydio. It's not even close.
Wow, I'm kind of surprised in the outcome. I thought the tracking function might have been closer. Clearly, Skydio remains King in this one area. Great comparrison video, Marcus.
Thank you John! The Skydio really rocked it! 🙂
Great idea for doing this comparison. Not surprising the Skydio 2 is better with the beacon. It's kind of nice to see that DJI isn't King of everything.
Yes, I honestly thought the Air 3 would perform better than it did. Thank you Ryan!
@@IdahoQuadcopter yeah so did I
Dji needs to develop a tracking beacon
They used to track your phone... DJI had a beacon watch in development but it never made it to market. Active Track just isn't that important to most people.
@@londenardAgreed.. I’ve owned a drone for over 3 years now and have only used active track a handful of times
I like that idea!
Did I mention I love your reviews on the different brands of drones and commentary
I learn a lot from you
Thank you very much!
I found the same thing with my Mavic 3 pro and my Skydio
The Skydio was spot on with it in motion track it always found a way to find you doing some fancy obstacle avoidance
The DJI Mavic 3 pro like you experienced would get stuck behind a tree or something
DJI needs to add GPS Tracking in their drones and then they will be tops
DJI will keep improving. I have no doubt of that.
*Without a doubt a great comparison and a great video, congratulations mate, a hug 😉👍*
Yes, both are impressive drones. 👍
The results were not surprising to me, as a former Skydio owner I knew it's hard to beat in these type of test. If your primary reason for getting a drone, is for it to track you and avoid object, the Skydio is still the one to get. For all other purposes, the Air 3 looks like the better choice for most people. Great testing Marcus, and thanks for sharing.
Thank you Ron! You're right, if I could only choose one drone it would be the Air 3!
Always enjoy your videos. Never miss one. The was a great comparison.Skydio really nailed it for tracking. Amazing how it didn't loose you and got around those trees. DJI need to lift their game a bit.
It was really fun to see both drones in action! Thank you!
The best Marcus, i never miss one of your videos. i want to say hi from Romania🤝
It is absolutely my pleasure Marcel! Thank you!
Probably not a surprise with the outcome, but an interesting comparison
It was fun to try Ross. 🙂
I own both as well. Was super excited for the Skydio 2 when I got it… quickly to realize that although it doesn’t crash it’s got a horrible small sensor and literally all the footage is unuseable because of how jerky it is following you while avoiding obstacles. From your video the only useable footage from the whole thing would be from the Air 3, even though it did get stuck a few times… at least you got useable data from it.
I agree, the Air 3 was way more cinematic. 👍
Seems the Air 3 tracking is more on par with the Autel tracking which unfortunately is not great either, very good real world testing Marcus good or you. Maybe this video should be viewed by DJI for future improvement updates on the tracking
I'm not a fan of Autel's OA or tracking. 👍
Great demo on the bike Marcus - well done, good test. Love the Skydio, Air 3 love handles are handy! Thankfully it didn't crash and stopped - DJI need to sort this out. Many thanks for sharing this - have a great day :)
Thank you Mr. Matthews! I really had fun putting this video together!
Hi Marcus, there's no doubt the Skydio performed better overall, but just in my opinion the Air 3, when it did actually work, took a much better route between the trees, making a more natural path, more "daring", whereas the Skydio was changing height and direction to keep tracking, like you said , it priorotises obstacle avoidance, which to be fair, did a great job, now im confused lol
Ha! I hear you, the Air 3 was very smooth in it's moves.
It got lost in the trees very smoothly. @@IdahoQuadcopter
Thank for your test.! The Skydio is by far the best tracking drone and that's more evident when tracking in front and at a higher speed. There is no competitor even close to Skydio. As a mountain biker there is no other product in the market in whiich you can rely only in enjoy your ride. For me Active track in real world requieres a third person to pilot the drone and be aware of the controller.
I was one of the guys that was waiting foward Skydio 3 with a better camera and more skills. It won' t happen 😢.
With that said, the Air 3 seems to be tbest value drone nowadays and I will try to purchase one in a near future.
But for sure I won't sell my Skydio2+ a great compainion for my rides.
I follow you from Argentina 🇦🇷.
Thank you! Hang on to that Skydio 2, it should be viable for a few years yet.
This was a fantastic video! Thanks for making this and risking your drones! I don’t have a Skydio but I did very recently get the error three and I also have the Mavic three the first one. I was very impressed with the Mavic three’s obstacle avoidance and I still am and I’ve always been more impressed with the Skydio obstacle avoidance. In fact, I really expected the Skydio to do a lot better than the air three but I think the Air 3 was doing a lot better until it got stuck in the tree.
The winner overall was the Skydio, although I think the Air 3 kept up a bit better, at least when it was following you. It’s really too bad that Scott AUDIO has bowed out of the consumer market because they really were ahead of DJI in a lot of ways and that’s not easy to do. I thought Skydio was alternative to DJI Fly for a while. But as is so often the case we are forced to go with what is available and that is pretty much DJI and maybe Aurelio. Again great video! This video reaffirmed, my lack of overall trust in DJI obstacle, avoidance. As good as it is it still needs a lot of work!
DJI's obstacle avoidance is top notch, it's the ActiveTrack that needs some work. 🙂 Thank you for watching!
Skydio is by far the KING!! Great video Marcus
I agree, nothing comes close for tracking!
That was fun, Marcus. Cheers, buddy.
Thank you, George!
Love the brimmed bike helmet look! You might set a new bike riding safety style Marcus.
Bald guys have to do something! 😂
Fun test! Both good drones for their purpose! Nice Job!
I agree, it was fun to see how they did!
In 2022, I went across the US with my e-bike and a Skydio 2 (not 2+) with a controller, a beacon and five batteries and an extra phone for the controller. I flew the drone over 200 times coast to coast, very often in open space where I used the drone to orbit while I biked some 10 mph. Very often, segments of the footage would be unusable as the gimbal would jerk and change position abruptly for a millisecond, ruining the cinematic performance of the drone. Nevertheless, I also had plenty of excellent footage.
I was impressed with the Air's smoothness at the beginning of your test. So, I am inclined to think that the Air 3 would have been a better choice for my cross-country tour. It folds, has a better flight time, and I love the RC. Not that it matters, as Skydio 2 (+) is no longer available as a consumer product.
I will buy an Air for my 2025 cross-country tour because it is compact and has all the other goodies. Thanks for the test. It is a great video.
While the Skydio tracks better overall, the DJI Air 3 has a much better camera, and as you say, moves much more cinematically.
Excellent experiment! The Skydio 2 hands down is the winner, however GPS tracking is a lot easier and more proficient than optical tracking. If DJI can manage to provide beacon like functionality within the controller then the Air 2 would have a fighting chance. Until then, DJI has to bow to Skydio. I recall rumors that DJI was once working on a beacon that you wear on your wrist like a watch. Maybe something will come of that in the near future. This was fun to watch.
Thank you! Yes, I've heard a beacon is in the works!
@@IdahoQuadcopter Are there any rumors of incorporating that kind of functionality into the DJI RC Motion 2 Controller, or a successor?
@@geezerpleasers_OG It's all just rumors. 🤷♂🤷♂
If tracking was my primary objective, Skydio would win hands down. All things considered, I'd stick with DJI products for all the obvious reasons. Loved your non-scientific test "Disclaimer", which differentiates your channel from all the hype and sensationalism one finds with those amateurs' who are simply looking for "clicks". Practical tests matter; hence, kudos for this fine demonstration. Thanks for sharing! 😎
Thank you Del! I just don't want people to think that I'm some kind of drone expert, because I'm not! I just like to fly'em. 😀
@@IdahoQuadcopter That's obvious!
So does the Nifty mode in bypass help the drone track quicker around obstacles?
No, just the opposite, in Nifty mode it makes less dramatic moves.
FINALLY you got your precision landing. Maybe the Air 3 is making up for the poor landing performance of Mavic 3 Pro!
Yeah John! It nailed that landing! 😀
Skydio might be the only brand to really challenge DJI, both in camera performance and obviously OA algorithm. Too bad their off the consumer drones market now.
Let's hope that it's a temporary "out of stock".
Hi Marcus...Great video. At least no drones were hut in the making of this video. Just need to use the right tool for the job at hand. Clearly we can see which one.........👍
Thank you Jim! Yeah, this test was just a bit of fun! 😀
I would like to see if the Mavic 3 pro does any better. To tell you the truth I never use tracking on any of my drones. This isn’t a deal breaker but good to know.
I agree, tracking is something fun to play with, but in reality, I don't use it much.
Thanks a lot. Please repeat the same and compare the tracking between air3 and mavic 3 pro
I plan on testing the Mavic 3 Pro soon. 🙂👍
Surprising results. Give and take with these two. Great demonstration.
Thank you! Cheers! It was a natural comparison.
The beacon with Sydidi is a superior technology that all other quality manufacturers should adopt, DJI take note and make an even better modern version of this technology, just do it and get it competitive with tracking please.
No question the Skydio was up to the task at hand. 👍
Good Comparison Marcus. Both look like fun but the beacon takes the trophy. A little surprised but let’s see if it improves through some updates.
Thank you for stopping by Mr. Johnnie!
Not an apples to apples comparison. The beacon uses GPS when it loses you and the Air 3 tracks purely by visual means. That's why Skydio moves awkwardly at times. At least that's my understanding.
I was not comparing like technology in this video. I do understand how the beacon helps the S2. I wanted to see if Active Track 5.0 and APAS 5.0 would track as well as the S2. It was just a fun test for entertainment. Thank you for watching!
Air 3 on top of mtn. doing master shots circle over us and it crashed into the only tree high enough to hit. Craahing to the ground. In it's defense. Sunrise was very bright and may have contributed to this crash.
Air 3 active track around obstacles is very poor.
Maybe try "Nifty" because if the Air 3 detects anything within 10' it freaks out.
Thanks for the comparison test 👍
Oh wow! I'm sorry to hear it.
Considering that the Skydio is several years older than the newest DJI drone that result is astounding! DJI has a lot of work ahead to even catch up to a 2019 technology of tracking.
Yes, I was surprised Cliff. 👍
Oh all right Marcus, another great video as you always say, let’s get that bird in the air
In this case a couple of them Robert! 😀
The drone Air 3 was behaving strangely something seemed wrong.
Thank you Marcus.
I'm not sure, it seemed to be okay. 🤷♂️
It's been 4 yrs when skydio lunch, and DJI still didn't figure out how their drone is so good at tracking.
Yes, they need a beacon.
I knew this video was coming. Thanks, MC, though the fight was a bit unfair since A3 has no beacon. I'm guessing dji did the math proving that developing a beacon would not be cost effective. Since I'm not vested in your drones, I think you should have both track at the same time to see what happens. 😊 See how "friends" come up with great ideas?😊
Ha! Yeah, that would give the drones a chance to run into each other. 😀
The DJI is a joke if you are looking for tracking. Imagine the DJI trying to follow me bombing down a mountain at 20 mph on a mountain bike with trees and obstacles?? Not a chance it will keep up. And let’s just not notice the elephant in the room -- who the heck wants to riding their bike, walk, drive with that huge ass controller around your neck? Not only dangerous, and uncomfortable, but it ruins the shot!!! For action sports, there is no other option other than Skydio. Well actually, I guess now there is no option for people to buy a new skydio since skydio stopped selling recreational drones. I hope this will be the first time a drone I bought will actually increase in value!!
You are so right about the Skydio 2. So sad that Skydio is no longer doing consumer drones!
I’m not surprised the Skydio smoked the Air 3 in tracking.
What I was surprised with was how well the overall image quality held up to the Air 3. Certainly the specs would lead you to believe the Skydio’s camera was from the stone ages relative to the DJI, but I’d say the Skydio still is very relevant with its video presentation.
Still a product well ahead of its time
I agree. While the Air 3 video was better, the S2 held up quite well.
Couldn't this simply be improved by a firmware update? The Air 3 would simply have to follow the remote control for this. It would have to be adjustable: either tracking the remote control or ActiveTrack.
I'm not an engineer, but I do see your point. Thank you for watching!
Tracking both would be easier than one vs other. DJI needs to focus on this.
Now that's a Tania landing for the Air 3 :)
Thank you, Tania! I had fun putting this one together!
Air 3 did better than I thought it would....
Skydio reigns King. I wish another company would even come close, as Skydio has nothing to compete with, resulting in a 4 year old drone that has no reason updating (besides the + range). Skydio 3 will make a debut as soon as another company approaches their space.
Yes, this shows how advanced Skydio's software and hardware really is.
That was a classic case of Sensitive Dependence On Initial Conditions. It really didn't matter if you rode exactly the same path, because the small difference in the two drones' initial position meant that they were going to encounter the trees and other obstacles at different points and angles, then act to avoid them, in different paths, and were going to continue to be on different paths all the way through. That said, it was a completely fair test, because the nature of the challenge was the same for both drones.
Yes, this was a demonstration for entertainment only, not a scientific test. 👍
Very awesome job bro. I want to know if fimi X8 mini v2 and v1 has the same firmware update because I I had my update from 1031A to 1034B on version 1. I've the same firmware update for v2. What makes the difference between v1 and v2. Enjoy your day bro. Welbeck from Accra Ghana west Africa Thanks
Thank you! I'll try the update!
The Skydio is way better, hands down on the tracking. It's a shame they stopped their consumer drone. Thanks for the insight.
I agree! I wish they were still in the consumer drone business.
I wonder if gimbal angle has any effect on how well the Air 3 can track? In other words, if the target takes up the main field of view, rather than having other things like trees, I wonder if it would track better. Because after it made that problem corner, it seemed like it got hung up on the tree as far as focus.
I believe it just can't predict the path when there are obstructions. Skydio perfected that. 🙂
Hi Marco, any hope for skydio fans in the future? Any other company dwveloping products that can track as well as skydio?
I’m not sure. I’d love to see Skydio get back in to consumer drones.
I think sir it can relate on a litchi app that comes with 2 tracking mode, the Air3 is like only tracking mode system of the litchi that following the subject that you set on the box while the tracking system on the Skydio 2 is related to the litchi follow mode that follows the remote or the host am I right sir? so for me using the litchi i always do use the follow mode instead of tracking correct me if im wrong sir by the way the comparison was superb and im very impressed how powerful is the skydio 2 despite of its 4year old, Air 3 360 obstacle sensor also is awesome the only thing need to improve is the tracking lots of subject loss
It was a fun test. I believe both drones use both optical and GPS location to track.
wow awsome review marcus
Thank you! it was fun to put this video together.
Hi Marcus, good comparison video. I thought the Air 3 was going to struggle, but upto the point where it stopped, I think the DJI was doing a better job than the Skydio. It was avoiding the obsticles better, but obviously it was short lived. Shame. The Skydio wasn't quite centered on you, meaning that you was off to the side for most of the video. But the Skydio was the winner here.
Not sure why DJI haven't got it right with this drone. Some videos of the DJI Mini 3 Pro, its active track seemed to work better than the Air 3s did. But that aside, the Air 3 and skydio 2 are certainly great drones, lets hope DJI sort out the ActiveTrack on the Air 3.
Thank you! The Air 3 has excellent OA, I had hoped the tracking would be better.
Hi Marcus, that was a very nice comparative test. DJI management is meeting now to see if they can revoke your DJI Fanboy decoder ring. lol Besides the camera and battery time, I absolutely love the Air 3 signal penetration. The best of any other drone I own. Wow, you didn't even need a round landing pad for the Air 3? vbg
Ha! I was hoping you'd like that landing Richard! 😀
Well, the Skydio had the advantage of the beacon so it always could find you. The Air3 did a better job of keeping you in frame when it was following you! But the Skydio does have excellent tracking! Thanks for sharing!
Yeah, that Skydio 2 is holding up quite well for 4 year old technology. Thank you Michael!
DJIs tracking is totally cinematic and this is the only thing keeping it back. With a DJIs beacon it will be unbeatable Air 3 and Mavic 3 lineup. And I hear beacon is coming!!!
That would be great! The OA was flawless.
Can you do the same with Mavic 3? Mavic 3s active track is far better than it was before. Also You can try nifty too is much faster. AIir 3s loses optical target too easy. Mavic 3 sees far better
Yes, I may try this with the Mavic 3 too.
Hi Marcus! I am a DJI fanboy! I thought the Air 3 would blow away the Skydio. I was amazed that the Skydio did so well. Its OA kept it out of trouble and when it reacquired you it sped up to get back in position. If the Air 3 had been able to track the controller, it might have done much better. I suspect that if you flew the Air 3 at a higher altitude it would have not lost you, but that wouldn't have been a fair comparison. Thanks for another great video!
You are correct Fred. I'm sure if both drones were above tree level there would have been not much difference between the two.
I have seen a video where're skyido drone was flying and it did not see a wire and it crash right into the wire. As the battery get weaker the Drone has to make a decision that's safer for the Drone
Skydio states that the Skydio 2 may not see wires or limbs under one inch circumference.
skydio definitely wins in terms of tracking.. but. the footage isnt very smooth. would not really matter how good the tracking is when the footage is unusable. mavic gets lost more easily but the shots it does get are more cinematic (with the first left turn for example) and smooth and actually usable. thats the difference.
I agree with your observations. 👍
Curious as to what weather app are you using to determine wind and the all clear to fly that pops up on the start of your videos??
That is an app called UAV forecast. 👍
Skydio's tracking is better and this is due to the beacon
That's a good thing. 👍
Skydio does exactly what they claim. It prioritizes obstacle avoidance. Unfortunately your making a video of you on a bike. Not a video of missing trees. Air 3 needs a bit if patience. But it gives you video of you in center frame, riding a bike. Its better suited to the occasional tree, not a guntlet.
No question that from a cinematic perspective the Air was much smoother.
Lol dji definitely got a long way to go Marcus that skydio is in another league 😂....Still atleast the air 3 lives to fly again and I guess it does what they claim it avoids and stops ✋️ well as usual Marcus another great video I just wish they would sell the skydio in the uk 🇬🇧 😁👌👍 🇬🇧
Thank you @UKBUBBLERS! The OA on the Air 3 was flawless!
Do you think the AIR 3 drone is suitable for beginners?
As with all of DJI's current drones it is very easy to fly. A beginner would have no problem flying the Air 3.
Good comparison but Skydio is still the tracking king. Not that surprising since the Skydio's whole purpose is to track smoothly and efficiently.
Yes, that is Skydio's best feature!
I was so hoping DJI was going to kill Skydio!!!
But wow just makes Skydio look brilliant!
And DJI like one of the other cheap entey level drones in comparison.
😂😂
Well done Skydio engineers!
4 years later and still leaps and bounds in front!
I agree Jason. I was kind of surprised at just how much better it was.
Skydio is the true 🏆🥇
It's the best tracking drone ever!
👍23 only for bike gymnastics. I hope in road bike for the next video.
Yeah, that is the only bike I have. 🙂
Beacon absolutely helps Skydio keep on target, but the collision avoidance baked in is the real reason why it works so well. Once the Air 3 couldn't find a way around the tree it just gave up. My Skydio will find a way, and usually look pretty good doing it too. Even when A3 was sucessful at getting past a tree it didn't do it in a nice looking way. And the constant warning chime from the controller is pretty annoying (I keep the volume down on mine when flying close).
I've had my Skydio lose the beacon once or twice, including one time it just decided to fly off for no reason -luckily I saw it happen and took control- but for the most part I'm surprised by just how well it finds a path and still have useable footage too.
Both drones are great in their own right. It was a fun test.
What? No link to Dobo's Love Handles?
I'll correct that now. 👍
@@IdahoQuadcopter There ya go!
For some reason DJI is having a hard time tracking bikes. Cars, boats and pedestrians are much better.
That's interesting, and good information.
Awesome ❤😊

Skydio 2 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
I love that Skydio 2! 😎
Passando pra prestigiar aquele super Like Tmj ✌️ ✌️ ✌️
Thank you for watching!
I personally think that wrong is too low to be tracking I think it tracks above the trees but for that much money I'm definitely not impressed with the Drone it is not on my list DJI Air 3 too many warnings for the Drone so the Drone does what's best to save itself from crashing
Both of these are amazing drones. 👍
I think that mavic air 2 is better than air 3 in the tracking performance
I'll do some more testing with the Air 3. 👍
Unfortunately, for the majority of people living outside the US, the Air is the only option
Sadly, Skydio is advertising out of stock for their drone.
Skydio avoided but footage sucked with stops and go and jerks! Orbit was OK in the open. Air 3 failed and made too many close calls for me. I'm happy I don't use active track!
That stop start has been a criticism of the S2 from the start.
I don’t use it either 😂🙏🏽😵💫
I almost lost my air 2 using active track not trying it with my air 3 I got a week last Friday
I’m sweating
DJI tracking is garbage because they haven’t figured out how to steal the technology from Skydio yet 😆 I use the Skydio 2 for following my vehicles as a solo filmmaker, it’s a big bummer that Skydio is quitting the consumer market as it’s a great drone - I’ve flown it in some of the craziest situations and it doesn’t crash.
Yes indeed, the Skydio 2 in conjunction with the beacon are amazing!
Sadly Skydio gave up on consumer drones.
They're out of stock. It remains to be seen if they're done with the consumer market.
No idea why so many review the Skydio when no one can buy it anymore. No reason to tell us how good the Skydio is when we can't do anything about it.
You want to show a great video? Show how other drones track as good or better than a Skydio.
How do you zoom in with the skydio 2
Use the paddle on the right hand side of the controller. 👍
Skydio 2 MotionTrack, or any other drones, they had, are all sold out.
Yes, sadly that's true.
Here is one example
I stopped to answer questions and Skydio goes into pause mode waiting
It was in front of me originally but when I left it needed me to push continue
It tried get to me but was not fast enough and did what it does best to get back in front of me taking a block to finally get back in front of me

Yes, it was struggling to catch up. 👍
DJI should have paid you 50K to NOT upload this video😂
Ha! I love the Air 3. This is just one small feature of the drone. 😀
BTW good luck buying a Skydio 2...
Yeah, I wonder what that's about?
@@IdahoQuadcopter The rumors are that they are done with the consumer space butttt.... I'm not completely convinced yet. An S3 with a proper camera and transmission system might peak my interest.

Yes, it is sad.....
Face it, DJI just doesn't track very well. Have to look elsewhere.
Stop calling a drone a guy smh
Air 3 was a disappointment in the tracking.
Yes, somewhat. 👍
