This is one of my favourite performance of Brahms' Ballade No. 3 op. 118. Yes, I also like the rubato. I must perform this piece for a piano exam and I wish I could play it this well!! :)
@@peytongustafson2580 Hi Peyton! I am doing well, thank you. I completed my piano exam all those years ago and did quite well. I still remember this piece and how difficult I found it to play :)

I had an itch that needed to be scratched - I needed to listen to this Ballade and I knew Evgeny would give the most exciting performance of it. I was right. Itched scratched. I might listen to it five more times.
Gorgeous interpretation! The official name of the piece is No. 3 Ballade in G minor: Allegro energico from Sechs Klavierstücke Op.118. The whole opus is dedicated to Clara Schumann.
I like Kissin's version much better than Pogorelich's. Brahms was a Romantic composer, after all, and Pogo plays the piece mechanically, like a military march. Kissin's version is much more expressive.
I love this piece! Beautifully played! Very inventive interpretation in a good way. Tempo here is just right. Some people go too fast or too slow. I have performed this piece myself several times.
i am choosing this peice for my piano exam as well. When i heard this peice, i jst could'nt forget the melody. Even though there is only 2 months away until my exam, im still changing Brahms op 188 no2 into this peice, brahms op 188 no3. This peice is fabulous :)
The set listed below is titled "Opus 118, Klavierstucke" as per the Henle Urtext edition. So let's put that argument to rest. The other sets in this edition are titled: "Opus 76, Klavierstucke"; Opus 79, Zwei Rhapsodien"; Opus 116, Fantasien"; Opus 117 Drie Intermezzi"; and Opus 119, Klavierstucke". These Klavierstucke sets may contain Intermezzi, Capricci, Balladen, and Romanzen and/or Rhapsodien. (for purists, there is an umlaut over the u). BTW I agree with bertiethetoupee4's assessment.
yes i've seen it, and played all of op.118, and they are called Pieces for piano. but ok, perhapse you've seen the edition where they are all called intermezzo's
@1p8t7r Well ... i don`t know if you ever seen the score of the Intermezzo`s. Yes ... there are 6 pieces, but they are not called that. The name of the cycle it`s Intermezzo.
Well, this is very well played. With a lot of expression and interpretation. And the tempo´s are good. Brahms did not give another tempo for the middle part!! Although Kissin plays with little rubato he respects this. The temposhift in Pogorellich´s version is almost karikatural. Furthermore it is played mechanical..
Well, i understand both your opinions. It's difficult to choose, there's both very diffirent and i like them both very very much. It depends on my mood i think, great interpretations!!!
Brahms is about emotion in pure strength and speed i think, that's not the real thing, doesn't mean it's bad, Kissin is a lot better at playing Liszt than any other composers imo
but still, isn't an Intermezzo. those are "Six pieces for piano" The six pieces are: No. 1. Intermezzo in A minor. Allegro non assai, ma molto appassionato No. 2. Intermezzo in A major. Andante teneramente No. 3. Ballade in G minor. Allegro energico No. 4. Intermezzo in F minor. Allegretto un poco agitato No. 5. Romance in F major. Andante No. 6. Intermezzo in E flat minor. Andante, largo e mesto Better inform next time!
Slow tempo, any very very fluctuating. The tempo it`s Allegro Energico, what he`s playing it isn`t even Allegretto, more like Andante ... He`s a great performer, but ... The best interpretation of the Intermezzo op.118 that i`ve ever heard it`s with Radu Lupu. Take Care !
@@watutman At last someone names (almost) all the relevant pianists that need to be named concerning this piece. I'd add Gieseking, Katchen and Kempff.
I can see a lot of ability in the playing but I fail to see anything to justify some of the more extravagant ejaculations. It seems to me to be a little shapeless and displays muddled thinking.
@TheFrenchiesRock For pity's sake, please no! Everyone and their dog plays it fast. That just takes away all the power and makes it sound like a techno song.
too much affekt, too much rubatissimo. At one point he seems to think that he needs to "help" the composition to sound better by making a very supended rubato turn. Aye aye aye. Feels like you ate a meal with too much butter by the time, he is done. Another round ? no, thanks.
Dea .D "there is supposed to be exaggeration" ? certainly not, not by romantic era's standards. Listen to actual historic late romantic era pianists captured on audio in the early 20th century you will see that there is such a thing a good taste when playing romantic pieces and what i referred to in Kissin's interpretation is exactly the counter example of that.
destow oh sure. Every musician is entitled to interpret music how they want. But when that interpretation handicaps the score it's when that freedom is better enjoyed outside the concert hall. There are many ways to play with musical taste and just many to saccage the score.
