Steel Phantom - The Final Day (60FPS Extended Version)

  • Take a look back at the final day for Steel Phantom, the Arrow Dynamics looping/hyper coaster which opened in 1991 and closed on September 4th, 2000. I was a huge fan of this ride. So much so that at one point in my life I owned one of the original yellow cars that the coaster ran during the first portion of its life.
    While I have released most of this footage many years ago, this is the first time it has been released in 60fps, with additional footage. Super thanks to Nina Layers for the POV.

    I'm so glad you recorded this on that day 22 years ago. I was five and just missed the height requirement that year. Here I am, just turned 27, and I look forward to going to Kennywood with my own children someday. The last few minutes of this reminded me so much of the Kennywood Memories documentary. Thanks so much for sharing!

    I was born in 1998 so I sadly never had the chance to ride Steel Phantom before it was transformed into Phantom’s Revenge. Obviously none of us early Gen Z’ers never did, and I doubt I’ll ever have any luck finding one my age who rode Phantom before all 4 inversions were scrapped and replaced with airtime hills and over-banked turns as part of the Revenge treatment. If anything, it would be nigh-on impossible as most early Gen-Z’ers were only 3 years old at the time, and thus have only ridden Phantom in its current form (I mean probably even before 2009, when part of the Arrow track from the first drop until the big hill before the second drop into the ravine was replaced with Chance/Morgan track, but that’s just it).
    I do look forward to riding Phantom’s Revenge one day when I visit Kennywood for the first time. I live in NJ and the city of Pittsburgh (where Kennywood is located near) is a couple hours away from where I live, so it would be a pretty long road trip, but definitely worth it nonetheless.

    • @SeanFlaharty
      @SeanFlaharty  Год назад

      Being a huge fan of the original, I had my doubts that Kennywood would make a better ride. While I do believe Phantom's Revenge is the better ride, I do miss the intensity of what Steel Phantom would deliver.

      To be honest, I don't know if you can get that close nowadays, and I have ridden the newer version. I haven't been to the park in quite a few years and need to revisit, once the issues with the latest coaster are fixed. Anytime I have wanted to visit, Steel Curtain is closed.

    Another great steel phantom video 😎 I’ve watched this video multiple times now 😂 Miss this ride. 3:17 to 3:30 I can listen to the chain lift sound for hours. I love when the train crest’s the top of the hill and the sound of the chain lift kinda switches up. It’s like a lower pitch sound when it gets to the very top. Can’t forget the trim brake sound too 4:16

      Steel Phantom was easily the most intense Arrow looper I had ridden. During an ACE event in 1998, there were just a handful of us that rode that thing in the dark, dozens of times without ever leaving the train. It was incredible but not for everyone. When they announced it was closing, I was really bummed. Having said that, I do think Revenge is a better ride.

    That little splash of green test paint at the bottom of the first hill makes me kinda sad. Sure this coaster knocked ya around a bit. But it was truly insane to ride! And it's the type of coaster you never could get used to. Know matter how many times you waited in that line, the anticipation was real.

    Man I wish I could have ridden this, but it was long closed by the time I was tall enough to ride it and I live on the west coast. How does it compare to Viper at SFMM? I love Viper and have so much nostalgia for old school massive Arrow loopers!

    • @SeanFlaharty
      @SeanFlaharty  6 месяцев назад +1

      I thought Steel Phantom was more intense than Viper but Viper was the smoother of the two. I rode Viper last year and had a good ride on it. Out of the three large seven-loopers that Arrow manufactured, Viper has always been the smoothest I have ridden. Vortex and Steel Phantom felt kind of similar in regard to roughness but there is something about Viper that makes it easier for me to enjoy, while remaining intense.

    The original hurt like hell. The revenge hills they added still hurt, if you’re small enough and not holding on you’ll get lifted out of your seat and slammed back down into it. Not nearly as bad as son of beast in kings island though. That hurt like a bitch though!

    • @SeanFlaharty
      @SeanFlaharty  Год назад

      The original had an intensity that I still haven't felt on another Arrow looper. I know there aren't many of them around anymore but I still try to ride one when I am at a park that has one. I was at Six Flags Magic Mountain a couple weeks ago and took two rides on Viper. I really enjoyed that ride.

      Ha ha. It was quite an intense ride but I never really had issues with the roughness. Not sure if it was my height or I just braced for the rougher transitions but I loved to marathon ride the coaster during a few ride sessions. Many of my other friends really hated the ride.

    • @rcr01111
      @rcr01111 2 месяца назад

      I remember this as a kid. Stuffed paper towels in my shoes to get on Steel Phantom because I was a half inch short of the 52 inch requirement. I think the height requirement, intensity of the ride as it was a classic arrow looper it would give me a headache if I rode it twice. Pretty sure parts of the track including the loop were starting to deteriorate and this was always a known issue on Arrow coasters due to bends and curves not being designed by computer and just hand bent and made. PR solved all those problems. Back to Steel Phantom -The height requirement mostly locked it out for teenagers and adults only and there was never a long line in its late life.
