I was a month shy of 34 - remembering Play School. Now I know of Hamble's fate! Remember Fred Harris and Carol Chell in 1973-1975, my era. Aged 52, it's a world away.
Breakfast was not on strike that day, you're thinking of the NUJ strike in 2004. They were always in the News Channel studio on weekend mornings and holidays.
I've spoken about this in other videos, but I absolutely love to do so. "Play School" was revolutionary, it truly was. What other program for children in that era had them being directly spoken to by various adults? I personally believe that we wouldn't have shows like "Sesame Street" or "Rainbow" without "Play School". The presenters were all lovely. Each bringing something unique and quirky to the table. Some stayed, some went, some didn't even stay for a whole year. But even these small-time presenters I respect, due to their ability to talk to children and encourage them to play or sing along. Virginia Stride and Gordon Rollings were only the fantastic starting lineup, then, within the weeks, children of the 60s, 70s and 80s were greeted with more friendly faces, such as, Brian Cant Johnny Ball Floella Benjamin Derek Griffiths Julie Stevens Carol Chell Toni Arthur Diane Dorgan Eric Thompson Phyllida Law Fred Harris Chloe Ashcroft Colin Jeavons Lionel Morton Carol Leader Don Spencer Rick Jones Stuart McGugan Carole Ward Miranda Connell Johnny Silvo Sarah Long Marla Landi Gordon Clyde Karen Platt Carmen Munroe Sheelagh Gilby Jon Glover Terence Holland Valerie Pitts Iain Lauchlan Ben Bazell and of course, Ben Thomas. I wonder what he's up to now. Haven't heard anything about him for a while. He was great. CBEEBIES shows attempt to resemble "Play School" quite a bit. "Tikkabilla" as shown in this report, is a prime example. It tries to be "Play School", but it completely feels like a missed opportunity in many ways. Even Australia has their own "Play School" today, but it's been modernised to the core. For me, THIS is "Play School", and this is such a nice treat to hear from such presenters like Ben, Iain Lauchlan, Carol Chell and Fred Harris. Wish them all the best of luck in whatever they're doing now.
@@ppotter Some of my dad's personal favourites were Brian Cant, Derek Griffiths, Toni Arthur, Johnny Ball, Julie Stevens and Diane Dorgan. If any of those ring a bell.
@@RandomGuy-qh7tl In my day it was Brian Cant, Derek Griffiths, Toni Arthur, Carol Chell, Johnny Ball, Chloe Ashcroft and husband David Hargreaves (who I think still live near me), Stuart McGugan and of course Fred Harris and Floella Benjamin. Such wonderful, happy souls.
@@ppotter Obviously, I suspected Brian, Derek, Johnny and Toni to ring a bell, and maybe Julie does as well. Not many recognise Diane when I mention her. She was actually the first ever female presenter on the ABC "Play School" in 1966. She was on the BBC version from 1969-1974. Don Spencer was also on the Australian version as well, I believe.
Wasn't there a bloke who had a bit of a mental health problem in one episode that was live? Older brother told me about it but i would like to know if he was right
This is the GOOD Ben Thomas from Play School, not the bad Welsh Ben Thomas.
And the pie pilot from Pie in The Sky (if you remember that 80s BBC kids show)

@@ppotter Chloe Ashcroft and her husband live near you? That's brilliant! Did you ever talk with them in person?
Brian Cant - utterly adored him - he will never know how much he meant to me
I remember Brian Cant well. He presented both Play School and Play Away. Makes me feel old as I am now 53!
@@angelacooper2661 And he narrated Camberwick Green, Chigley and Trumpton. I sent him a few birthday cards - hope he received them.
Loved Ben Thomas when I was a kid
Amazing .
Ben Thomas was the Pie Pilot in Pie in the Sky. I remember that well :)
Ben Thomas voiced Stop go so did Lola young which I enjoyed watching.
I've always had a massive crush on Ben :P

It may've been filmed "as live" but I'm not sure it ever went out live.
