First, totally respectable that you guys know dual/multiple languages.. Robert.. loving your access to the EV knowledge and being able to share it with all of us, thank you. You are certainly doing something we all would love to do. Likewise, thanks to Luke for taking the time! simply outstanding....
What a great video, very informative and would love to do this to my 1994 mini. I have to say that your English is impeccable, when I first started listening I thought you had a very slight Scottish accent. More like this please.
born in Edinburgh, moved to the north of England, but left the UK 30 years ago to work in Asia and North America, landed back in The Netherlands ........so I don't really have a country I belong too🤪
Wasn’t easy to see from the video, curious how the motor connects to the wheels - are the driveshafts connected directly to either side of the motor, or is there a diff in between? Looking forward to seeing your next test drive and hearing your thoughts on the overall pros/cons of each system. Cheers!
They mention that it's a direct drive. but most likely they kept the differential in order to allow the wheels to spin at different speeds when cornering
Not huge differences in the clubman suspension at all. The car is ‘longer’ not by very much at all. It is mostly in the profile forward of the front axles.
We had the car balance tested and the weight distribution doesn't change that much either, car is still roughly 65% front 35% rear.......give to take a %
So lets say you went with this kit - where would you install the batteries on your clubman? - along the sides over the rear wheels or under the van floor ?
good question👍 .......because the seats fold down on the clubman I was hoping to keep the weight in between the wheels, also I purchase the clubman as a service support vehicle for cycle racing so I want to keep as much off the load area as possible 🤔
@@classicminiculture9800 Place the battery under the rear seats and create a "tunnel between the front seats that runs front to back. Also the floor of the trunk. It will be a tight fit all around.
the range is kilometres, motor can handle more but the space in the mini is limiting the battery size, might be able to increase that in the clubman as its a little larger.
They won't. Not unless the motor's running out of rpm. Speed is proportional to power (or properly force) In an exponential way because the work the engine has to do is push the air out of the way, and if you do it twice as fast, you also travel twice as far in the same time. 40kw is about what a 998 cooper made, good for around 85mph in a Mini, perhaps more since there's likely less transmission loss with direct drive. The wheels may be different diameters, but the tyre profile makes them all much closer in rolling circumference. Doubt there'll any weight distribution issues either. Minis were designed to take 4 adults + luggage. Hence the sophisticated rubber suspension on a car with next to no wheel travel that could weigh half as much again fully loaded.
true, its a big investment, but I fear classics will only get special day running licences in the future so I want to get ahead of that curve, The Netherlands is getting more and more difficult on emissions.
Although I admire the engineering I would rather see one of the plentiful Rover Minis used for this purpose as a mini without an A series popping and burbling would be defeating the essence of what a Mini is.
Sadly from 2030 on all combustion cars including classics will be banned from public streets in entire EU and Scandinavia :-( In Germany the Green Peoples Party gave order to shorten fuel supply from 2025 on by reducing all conventional fuel stations to only one state operated central gas station per city or county. Now they even want to slow down all the gas pumps from 20 litre per minute to 2 litre per minute...From 2027 on in the EU certain car spare parts will be banned too....as exhaust systems, turbo chargers and even some engine and gearbox oils...California and New York will do the same from 2027 on.... So no investments should be done in oil burning cars any longer....They even created a new kind of crime here, called emissions and smoke crime. "Bundesabgasbespaßungsverbot" in German. :-//
food for thought.......There are roughly 250 million cars on the road in Europe, without commercial vehicles, so the politicians will have to be more motivated than they currently are to get all of these replaced before 2030 without paralyzing the economies further........not to mention the lack of infrastructure for a boost in electricity needs (2x each household), so there is not a lot of time, as I understand the rule (2025, for some 2030 for others) it only applies to new car registrations, but for sure they will make it more difficult for the current car ownership installed base to use fossil fuel cars, fully expect a special license requirement for oldtimers to be used for limited times during the year though.
@@classicminiculture9800 Biggest problem is China, China told our EU politicians that they wont do any business with underdeveloped countries that still allow CO2 emitting traffic after 2030...I am sure USA and UK also will be forced by China to 100% electric traffic because today no industrialized country can afford sanctions by China....:-(

Thank you sir👍, hope this is useful to others, there are some interesting technologies out there that will help us all to keep enjoying out mini (s)👍

I couldnt imagine a quiet cabin in a mini, That sucky sucky from the SU's is heaven. But you done a good job of not messing up a beauty.
electric is defo the future and i cant wait to do an EV conversion on a classic - great video
rally cross🤔

nice conversion! mint mini! love it!!! miss my mini now.... I would do that if I had the money, to get a classic mini and do a electric conversion too
Mooi man, you should make it black behind the chrome of the charging port .
this is impressive. Is there a full build log somewhere?
We are in the process of build this system into the mini clubman estate, so you can follow the process in the latest updates of my channel.

he said 20kwh batteries 40kw motor 90 to 120 mile range.. 9 hours home charging

Drop us a line - we do a mini conversion...
How much?
Great review, did you say €25000 tor the conversion
correct for the kit.......👍
how fast were u going on the open road?
Really interesting and informative video👍
Bigger wheels will get you a slightly higher top speed but only about 4% so you might get 110kmh with 12's
good point👍

@@ethelmini I worked out the rolling circumference and it’s 4% so yes it will in theory. For a given motor speed the vehicle speed will be 4% higher.
@@classicminiworkshop Not if you haven't got the power to overcome the wind resistance at a 4% higher speed.
