  • After months of people asking me about why I quit SeneGence, I decided to sit down and make a video. It is pretty raw, I didn't have anything written down and I am a little bit of a hot mess! But I am hoping it answers some questions for people.

I also quit LipSense after several disappointments with the company. It just wasn't worth it to me to go into that much debt and I had issues with how corporate was handling the OOS issues and recruitment of new distributors. I found your honesty very refreshing and greatly appreciate you posting this video.

BTW it is against federal consumer law for a company to charge your credit card before you have received product. I know most of us have accepted the practice, but what she is describing about not having received product for three months is part of the reason why it is illegal.

A company that is professional offers superb customer service. This company doesn’t answer calls and doesn’t even return calls. This is a major red flag.

Thank you for your openness and honesty. I've been a makeup artist for 8 years now and I've been HOUNDED by "distributors". So.... I reviewed one- and complained about the alcohol taste. After my first review I got bombarded by people saying "You applied it wrong", "you're being dramatic".....
Not trying to self promote, but I did 2 videos on this, literally posted my 2nd one yesterday. It's so nice to hear you say these things.

Stefanie Green you have no reason to apologize, darlin! I ended up just saying "look. I'm 36. I've been playing with makeup since I was 2, been wearing it daily since I was 11. Been a pro artist for 8 years. Makeup should not be this difficult. No one should have to 're-learn' how to apply lipstick JUST to use it. Nope nope nope nope!!!" 😂😂

I’d like to respond to “Allie Bagz” post regarding the sales strategy of SeneGence : “NO company makes YOU purchase their products to resell.....which in turn makes this a pyramid scheme....” With SeneGence you can sell their products with no physical product to show your customers. However, to be a distributor you MUST buy products and it’s the only way ANYBODY can buy products. The company claims you can start “your business” with just $55.00 but, to buy the products as a distributor you have to order a minimum or you will have to sacrifice a % of your discount which makes your income reduced. What they do is make you think you’re at the cusp of making a lot of money in an up-start company selling quality products that will literally “fly off the shelves”. In reality, SeneGence has been in business for well over 25 years......hardly a ground floor company. How SeneGence is making money as a company is to push hard to sign up as many distributors as you can and distributors under you doing the same thing. In actuality, they are making money off of distributors.....not from an actual customer base buying their products. It’s the epitome of a pyramid scheme. I have $2000.00 + in products that I can’t unload without going through a “can’t stop the bleeding” losing battle. SeneGence has amazing products that I use to this day. But, they don’t go the route other companies (Avon) do to make a profit. They are greedy without shame. The distributors are paying the price for it. THIS IS A PYRAMID BUSINESS MODEL! Buy into it at your own risk. You have been warned.

I quit too! As I was mailing packages on a Saturday morning 7 months into my journey, I realized this was not what I wanted to do with my life. My family was taking a backseat and I was sick of being in debt (from trying to take advantage of that 50% discount).
I even had 14 girls under me but wasn't ever making more than $200 a month from commission (had to spend that much just to get paid anyways...) When I decided to swallow my pride and quit, I sold my stock at deep discount in less than a week! It feels so good to be free!
If you want to save money, don't sign up for an account - join a going out of business FB group. There are tons of women trying to dig themselves out of debt. I hate companies like this that prey on women. Don't drink the koolaid. I quit direct sales.

I am so glad I saw your comment. I was in direct sales a few years ago (Skinny Fiber/SBC) and even though I was fairly advanced and a team leader, I struggled to cover my autoship! I recently became disabled and had to leave my job. I am looking into going back into sales (but without an autoship). I still will be dealing with chasing sales and returns and MLM/direct sales headaches. But my gut says no and then I saw this video and your comment randomly! There has to be a better way! Maybe Poshmark or eBay and Amazon reselling. Not sure. Thanks to both of you ladies for helping me decide! ❤

You're so right about the packaging. Most products that are that expensive look cute or it's unique. I personally don't care that much, but there is nothing eye catching about it. Nothing about it says I'm a $45 lipstick. I personally like how creamy lipsticks feel and look.

I joined as a distributor about 2 months ago. I spent about 2,000. I was told there was a 100% money back guarantee. I jumped right in and ordered all the skin care products as well. After 30 days, my face had broken out, and my skin felt like a lizard. I went to my facial gal (I've gone to her for 10 years) and she said "what have you done?" She sent me to my dermatologist, and he said the product is definitely not for mature skin and to immediately stop using it. Now I've been told that the 100% money back guarantee does not apply to Distributors. What? I'm still in shock. Any suggestions? I do love the eye and lip products, but will not be using any of the skin care products going forward. Nor will I recommend them to anyone.

I have to agree about the Cctm. My distributor hooked me in saying that the cctm was a life changer and that she couldn’t believe what it did for her and that I absolutely had to try it ASAP. So I bought an overpriced product that doesn’t provide adequate coverage for me and now my skin is breaking out like when I was a teenager. I went back to my ten dollar container of maybalene foundation that covers better and doesn’t make me break out like the cctm

My sister sells lipsense and really loves it, so I’ve bought a fair bit from her to be supportive (I also loooove makeup so any excuse to buy more 😂).
But I completely agree with your comments about wearability issues. I always forget to reapply the gloss and then it starts flaking. It also wears off my waterline super fast.
And as with most MLM, if I ever express my issues or concerns on a Facebook page etc, I get pounced on by 50 distributors telling me all the reasons why the product is fine but I’m just doing something wrong. My favourite is when they tell me I shouldn’t wear other lipstick brands, like I’m really going to throw out my whole lipstick collection 😂

About the chapstick thing. I love my distributor but the very first thing that she told me was how bad chapstick is and that I shouldn’t use it. So that didn’t sit well with me because I truly am a chapstick addict but I was willing to give their version of chapstick a try and frankly I was not impressed at all. Maybe because I really am a chapstick addict I was jaded about it but it just didn’t do the same thing for me that chapstick does and now I feel like I have to hide my chapstick every time my distributor friend comes over lol

I sell lipsense (kinda). I'm not like a top seller it is just kind of on the side. But you touched on a lot of things that I agree with. The packaging is horrible! And the fees (S,H,T). I joined to get the discount but you have no discount after all the fees. I still love lipsense though. It might wear off what time I don't know but for me I have OCD and the not transferring of lipstick to my coffee cup while at work is what sold me. I appreciate your honesty at this video though.

Hello there. First off, I will start by saying I am a distributor, though I might as well be inactive. I started out below a friend of mine who had joined like Jan or Feb of 2017...I joined at the end of February. This was right when the horrible run on stock was happening, and all of the other issues that you were describing. It was immensely frustrating. However, I still personally use LipSense and I absolutely LOVE it, to this day. It is the only thing I wear...and I did wear lip color every single day prior to this. I have to, because I look ill without it...but what I hated was having to reapply *color* constantly as it faded off...I mean even after a couple of hours or less sometimes. So, having to reapply the gloss (without the color every time) is actually a bit of a godsend for me...because it's basically just moisturizing my lips, but the color is still there. Granted, there are some colors that don't work as well with my chemistry and flake off...but I went into it with the understanding that that might happen with some of them and there's really no way to know without trying them. I'm ok with that, even though I don't like having colors that I don't use. I can give them to friends or something, though. But my lips are so much healthier since I got away from Chapstick and moved exclusively to LipSense...I will probably remain a distributor, just for the discount and the ease of purchase, until I determine that it doesn't make sense with the annual fee, but I will continue to buy it, even then. Anyway, I digressed majorly here, sorry--I'm actually commenting for a different reason:
I got to the part about where you and your friends noticed you were being charged tax, and mentioning that it didn't say anywhere that that would happen. I am very confused by this comment because (1) I see the sales tax charge on every single order I place, and (2) this is a common practice. You are supposed to (or allowed to) charge the same tax to your customer...which results in you actually not "paying" it yourself. I don't believe you are *required* to charge your customers, but it is also common practice for a business to recoup that charge by passing it on to them. This is not something that a customer should get angry about...they pay sales tax on every single taxable item they purchase, anywhere. If they were to purchase directly from SeneGence, they would have to pay tax. (Disclaimer--I am in no way qualified to answer any questions legally...this is just my own understanding from personal experience.) If SeneGence is selling you an item that you may purchase for personal use--even at a discount--then that is essentially a retail item (not wholesale) that they sold to you, and that they, themselves, would be required to pay tax on. What you do with it (keep or resell) after you receive it is up to you...but they have to protect themselves and follow the rules as well. (If I am incorrect in my understanding of this and someone who **is** a lawyer wants to jump in and clarify, please do. I am open to education!)
Granted, they do charge shipping & handling on top of that, which can sometimes seem disproportionate for smaller orders...but this is also common practice. And you do understand that they don't keep the sales tax, right? That has to go directly to the government...just like what you would have to do as a business owner. (I don't like that they charge the tax on the total including shipping and handling, but that probably has something to do with all of the states they sell to. I'm guessing they have a blanket protocol that makes them compliant in every state.) So you *are* correct in that, if you are paying the government the sales tax you owe, yet you are not collecting it from your customers, then you are indeed losing money there...but, with all due respect, that is not SeneGence's fault...that is the choice of the business owner/"Independent Distributor."
On a separate note--I'm not going to disagree with you on some of the other operational points, but I do want to say that the stock issues have been remedied, and the whole thing seems to be up and running full force and working pretty seamlessly. When I did have a question for customer service recently, it was handled in a timely manner. I have not been personally successful in this endeavor, but that's just because I suck as a salesperson lol and it's completely on me...but, if anyone is considering joining and has not been completely discouraged by this video, I think their experience will be much better than yours was. (Girl don't get me wrong--I was FRUUUSTRAAATED by all the crap last year...but honestly it was due to the company having exploded and growing exponentially in such a short amount of time...which is due to the incredible flagship product they offer.) Anyway, I wish you well and hope you enjoy your new endeavor...but I felt obligated to comment for others who might be interested...if they read this far! lol. Peace!

Im kind of glad you made this video. about 5 years ago when I lived in LA I was introduced to Lipsense through my esthetician. Who became a friend. During that time the company was still quite unheard of. I tried the products and didn't LOVE them. Like the alcohol taste/burn. etc. BUT i did like that i could wear it all day. However, all the products i have were given to me never paid for. During this time I had the opportunity to meet the founder of senegence. After meeting her, i knew I could never purchase the product. She was one of the most rude, self serving people I have ever met.

I know this is a year late but WTH...First & foremost, your eye makeup - look great! (I’m hoping you have a tutorial for that specific eye!) Back to your original video...Thank you for making this video. I feel like it helps educate the general public on hierarchy/pyramid schemes that companies use, generally within cosmetics and geared towards college aged girls, to demonstrate what they can have so quickly buy doing what they love & already talk about with their friends. When I was in college, I was approached by a perfectly put together woman while standing in line at Starbucks - she said my hair & makeup were impeccable & on-trend, I looked gorgeous and asked if I wanted to come to a “beauty seminar” later that week. Being 20 years old and grinding away for my Bachelors Degree in Chicago, I didn’t hesitate to say yes...plus there were no obligations, at the time. When I got to the ‘seminar’ I quickly learned it was a Beauty Consultant Recruitment Seminar...not what I was looking forward to or anticipating. After listening to hours of information on different products, we were all given bags full of makeup, then told the cost of the bag plus the additional items being delivered to us. Not to mention what and how many items we needed to sell by when. There was no “If you are interested please stay, If not please go”; it was just a room full of unassuming women given products, whom were then given the option to Pay Now or Bill Me Later - followed by the highest success stories within the company. I only share this because most of these brands, typically makeup & jewelry, that operate on a pyramid scheme (verbiage may differ from company to company) make it so easy to become involved, but once in; leaving the company an individual usually finds it MASSIVELY difficult, frustrating, expensive, time consuming and sometimes not even worth the hassle. Again, thank you for sharing what so many others could not and doing so with class & dignity. **As a disclaimer I must say my experience was not & will not be the same as anyone else.**

Everyone likes pretty packaging but it’s 2018 and we have an island of trash that is *twice* the size of Texas in the Pacific Ocean, choking out wildlife and imperiling our food supply. The fact that LipSense has no extraneous packaging is one of the best things to recommend it, imo.
I get it. The packaging on some stuff is pretty. It makes you want to buy it. You feel pampered when you open it up. About 95% of the time I would say “to each his own,” but this isn’t one of those times.
The only way these companies are going to stop with this extra packaging is if people vote with their wallets. And personally, I would rather spend my money on PRODUCT than on packaging that is going to get wrapped around a turtle or in the belly of a fish that is going to end up on my plate.
A GARBAGE ISLAND TWICE THE SIZE OF TEXAS.
Think about what you buy. Put your appreciation of aesthetics aside and think bigger picture.
P.S. I don’t sell for LipSense or anyone else. I’m not particularly environmentally conscious. I’m kind of half-a**ed in my recycling efforts. But I do try to generate less waste. Recycling is fine but it’s better to *never generate the garbage in the first place.*

I definitely think you are raising some good questions to people trying to make a career out of selling this makeup..for me, I became a “distributor “ so I could just buy my own lipsense when I want and I also place orders for my friends. I don’t do it to earn money but sometimes my friends orders end up paying for the lipsense that I order so it works out nicely! Either way!! The product isn’t really for people who don’t want to stick to wearing it every day..if you don’t wear it every day your lips will may very dry and that’s when you would need gloss every few hours. I wear almost every day and only apply gloss at the beginning of the day and don’t have any issues. It’s definitely not the same creamy feeling you get from other products but let me tell you..if you are busy and having a put together appearance is important in your profession, lipsense is worth it. I am a medical rep and I would never use anything else because I need it to stay and not budge. Maybe not for everyone, BUT you are not expected to be a full on salesperson for lipsense just because you’re a distributor so this is a little misleading

Any other product I've tried hasn't been awful by any means, but I've found other products just as good or BETTER for a WAY cheaper price. As soon as my inventory is gone, I'm done. Thank you for your honesty. I'm a new distributor and I'm totally over the added fees on top of the cost of the product. I pay more than regular price on the products after all the shipping and handling fees and taxes. To top it all off, I have hardly sold anything myself... majority of the stuff i've gotten has been for me. Not a big deal but when one of my customers ordered something for her friend, I got word that her product had been stolen from the mail delivery service. People at the post office and other places that handle the SeneGence boxes see the lip tape and the logo on the box and know exactly what it is so they take it with them.

That's too bad. I love Senegence and the skin care has been a game changer for me and my skin. If the stock was low on your Lipsense stuff, perhaps you should have mentioned that to the President. I watched some of your make-up tips and really enjoyed it and followed your tips on the shadows and Onyx shadow is what I use as a liner line thanks to you. I don't see this as a pyramid scheme. I am here for the product. Reconsider and come back. Voice your opinion. The product is stellar and they need business people like you.

I love all the products, and I sell it. So now everyone just wears it for pictures. Luckily some things have been improved formulation wise or else I wouldn't be selling or wearing certain things. They needed to improve, and they're doing so. I went through the OOS and not being able to get a hold of home office but those things have changed too. Hopefully for the sake of active distributors things continue to improve. The skin care rid me of hormonal/cystic acne, I really couldn't be happier with everything.

In fairness to Lip Sense, I've never tried their product, but I'm not running out to give them a try. Was just on their site, and I can NOT believe how awful their color swatches are!! Seriously, 1/4" square color swatch does not help a customer choose a color. Their packaging is almost funny, but their $20 price tag isn't. Many other brands out there, in the range of Lip Sense's price range, all have more attractive packaging. Check out: Bare Minerals, $20, Clinique, $19, Huda Beauty, $21, Kat Von D, $19, MAC, $18, Smashbox, $21, Tarte, $20, Too Faced, $21, Urban Decay, $18 - - somehow, all of these brands are able to produce more attractive packaging in the price range of Lip Sense. When we purchase a L'Oréal, Flower Beauty, Maybelline, Pixi, Rimmel or Revlon we don't expect drugstore products to have stunning packaging, yet most of these lines have at least passable packaging. I just don't get why Lip Sense's brand looks so bad! Yes, technology does cost, but given that they don't have much invested in marketing / PR, or spend much on their site, I just don't get it.

Anyone watching this please remember that everyone is different.
I for one never once tasted alcohol. The first time I used it, it burned because there is alcohol in it. The alcohol evaporates fast leaving long lasting color.
I also have no problem reapply the gloss. They don’t claim this is a time saver. It’s a lipstick saver! Not having to reapply the lipstick saves you color and money in the long run. Reapplying the gloss is way less expensive when you have to buy more. So to me that was a pointless statement.
They also sell a matte gloss so if the regular gloss is too shiny, you could try that.
Don’t knock it til you try it just based off others opinions!
***I do not sell lipsense! I also don’t wear it on a daily basis. Only occasionally because I don’t wear makeup!***

Thank you for posting this. I too ran into the same issues. So sad because I actually do like their products. I still wear them. I Started when everything was sold out and out of stock and I was told to buy things as they came through. It was awful. Spent over $4000, nothing really sold, the market is saturated. Could not return anything. A year later, I still have the product in a closet. I’m basically giving them away because it is lost money. It is totally a pyramid scheme. Out of those $4000 and all the other money from down lines, my upline got a very nice paycheck and a trip. Mean while, I still have debt 🤷🏽‍♀️

I joined in the midst of the out of stock issue. It was the consensus of all the distributors I talked with to buy as much as you could whenever there was stock. It was insane. I now have all sorts of stock - stuff that is not selling at all. I do make sales, I do love the product, I am not great at selling, but do have loyal customers. NO ONE wants to sign up, NO ONE wants to have a party. I have done kiosks in the mall (I think I did it 8 times spread over 3 malls) didn't even sell enough to cover the cost of the rental of the kiosk. I believe originally people would sell the product, get the money THEN order the product for the customer - in that respect, you WILL see the profit.....but with the out of stock issue, distributors bought whatever was available and you end up with stuff that just doesn't sell!!! and in debt! Sometimes I think I am my own best customer, ha! Also, yes, the shipping and handling is ridiculous. I have days I am excited about the business, I have days I decide to quit. I am giving it a year - will reassess and hope that I have paid off some of my debt by then! One other thing - attached on the side of this youtube video was a girl selling LipSense for $.99!! I know she will eventually get caught but WHAT???

I totally agree about this. I’ve barely done anything since I became a distributor and I’m not going to renew it. I’ve realized I can’t tell people to buy these products because for every day life they aren’t that great. People have asked me about the eye makeup and I won’t let them buy it because it’s crap. It just really bothers me. LipSense is fine but for the price when I can buy something so magical like Jeffree Star that I always get complimented on and it’s comfortable and matte AND cheaper like why. It’s not that hard to carry a small pack of makeup remover wipes and reapply in the bathroom.

I am not a distributor but I buy from one who shows me how to use it and lets me try before I buy. She has taught me how to use the eyeshadow and it is amazing. Applies easier and quicker than powder eyeshadow without any flake off and it stays perfect until removed. The new eyeliner pencil is amazing - so smooth and easy to apply. The liquid eyeliner is great too but not as quick for me. The new mascara is awesome - I've never had a mascara apply so easily and look so great while growing my eyelashes. I don't sell lipsense, but I think you get a discount either way. I believe you can spend 100 every 6 months.. the products take real long to expire. I used to sell MaryKay Omg it was horrible. In order to stay active you need to buy $600 retail in order to get 50% so you would end up spending $300 every 3 months. Plus the products expire within 2-3 years. Or probably 1 year on the sunscreen and gel liners.. i still think lipsense is better to sell...

I appreciate your honesty, and I'm a distributor, too. The business was founded in the 90's, so it's not new, as you said; it's over 20 yeas old. The resent popularity in LipSense is what created the growth spurt, and consequent readjustment problems you experienced. The reason I love LipSense is because I got tired of eating my lipstick. I hate leaving it on coffee cups, water bottles, or taking a bite of my sandwich and geting lipstick on it. I know the gloss comes off, but if it bothers me, I just put on less. My husband can actually kiss me now when I have lipstick on; to me that's worth it. The alcohol/burn isn't fun, BUT it's killing bacteria. That's what I love; it's exfoliating, and it doesn't burn now. To me this is a side hussle. It's not my main thing. If you're looking to make a lot of money off of this, then yes, you have to invest in the business. It's called Pay to Play. Nothing is for free.

I wanted to address the tax on shipping/handling fees in case you ever need this info in the future, but some states, like Texas for example, actually require businesses to tax on shipping and handling as well, so SeneGence wasn’t being shady. Trust me, it’s SO annoying. I HATE paying those extra fees, which is why I looked into it and sure enough, it’s a state requirement and will be different depending on where you live. Taxes. 😬

I hate how mlm companies pray on women. If you look up financials for these companies, 99% of people do not make money. The company makes money off of their “employees” who buy products and then cannot sell them. Also, people in direct sales constantly harass their family, friends, and strangers. They want the same group of people to keep buying from them to support “their” business. First, it isn’t “their” business, they actually work for a slimey company. Secondly, I am not going to buy something for twice the price that I would pay elsewhere, to put money in the pockets of the top tier of a pyramid, ahem, mlm.

Read my lips. The kind of alcohol in LipSense DOES NOT dry the lips. It does however allow the wax in your lips and the dry skin that already existed to exfoliate. If you use the Lip Balm and the gloss it will hydrate your lips and keep exfoliating the lips and then you will have healthy lips. If you use chap stick or other brands of lipstick while you are using LipSense, you lips will keep pealing.

Did anyone else know of LipSense in 2004 in the competitive dancing world? I can’t believe they haven’t changed the packaging since then!

Another thing, Lipsense is not at all new! My mom's friends were using it back at least 10 years ago! I don't know why you think it's new but it's not. The Doctor's show reviewed it, and one of the doctor's said she did wear it when she was in school, and when she majored in dermatology she really looked at all the ingriedients and once in awhile would say it's okay, but the chemicals that make it stay are carcinogenic... Of course, it's like paint! I tried it years ago and just getting it off was horrible. I prefer a pencil and then a lighter color in the center. It's just not pretty unless you have naturally large lips because you can't great the same effects with it and a regular liner and lipstick.

I was literally just introduced to lipsense over the weekend. A friend had an online party on FB...anyway, nobody mentioned the alcohol taste or burn. I don't use products with alcohol...that already bothers me. I'm worried the shadows won't be as vibrant as the swatches either...I just paid my invoice yesterday, so it's a wait game now. They say there is a money back guarantee now...we shall see. Thanks for the honest video.

can I ask what products you do stand by in the lipsense? I don't want to buy something if it doesn't work. my main interest is the climate control, & collage night pak? I would love your honest feedback?

One of My friends wants me to join her team...ironiclly this was the first video that popped up after i watched the video she sent me.
While i think everyone should be who they want to be, i kind if feel like as women why have we fought so hard for equal rights in the workplace to pour our lives into something that's just perpetuating beauty standards and setting us back.
This is coming from a girl who cuts her own hair, is in the process of getting dreadlocks, and doesn't really think make up us worth any time or money other than maybe a little mascara.
Idk why she picked me to try and recruit 😂😂

The actual tax is not on shipping but the $4.50 handling. So you pay tax on the handling which is always $4.50. If you do not have a resale license then you get taxed on products like with any company. The only difference is the added tax on the handling. It is about 43 cents. I am sorry you had so many issues though. OOS was an insane time for a lot of people... I know I personally supported my team tremendously through that time. It good you realized you didnt enjoy it and its important that you love what you do. No product line is for everybody.

I know 3 people who sell or sold it and initially I thought about it as I love the lipsense but when I saw that you had to stock and meet a quota I knew it was all about the company wanting to make money and not the distributor's or even the customer. It could be great if they shipped directly to the customer and had no quotas and didn't require distributors to stock product. It's a selfish and ridiculous way to run a business. I predict they won't last long, like most of these types of companies, only the company and first people to join up make any real money.

The packaging. It KILLS me. I feel like If they changed that one thing they would draw in sooo many more people! I’m not a distributor or anything and I like a few of their products, but man. They need to make packaging a priority!!!!

I don’t know how long you waited to make this video, but your issues with the company are completely resolved. Full stock, no waiting, new products all the time... service agents are on the ball.
Packaging is being redone, the websites have been redone. Total 180 from those few months in 2017. Sorry you didn’t have a good experience.

Good to know but an admission of their error and an apology and/or free gloss (not too expensive on their part) may have made for continued reps. Of course IF your upline higher up reps treated someone 33 instead of 63 like she did me, you would have less customers. IF you are a founder or CEO of this company then you have my email. IF you reach out I will share who she is and the messages she sent me, if you care.

If it were sold in stores, they would have to raise the prices and it is the kind of product that you need to try it to appreciate it. Plus, they don't want big businesses to sell it, they want to help women to have their own businesses.
