Thank you for the info. I only have my first horse a little under a year ago. I live in the maritimes, I was wondering about horses insurance and you kind of made it more clear for me, which I will up for insurance even though it's under 10 thousands just because I find at the long run you never what the future holds and it is worth it to me.
I recently inherited 4 Morgan horses from my Father. I am planning on letting two of his old friends continue to ride them (just Western trail riding), but I want to make sure I'm protected. The two they ride are 11 years old, and I would guess are worth between $3000-$4000. The horses are paid for, so I am thinking the best policy would be the minimum on Mortality coverage and then getting the Major Medical supplement and some liability protection. I'm not concerned about losing the value of the horses, but I'd hate to have to make a decision based on financials when it comes to treating them for an injury. Curious if you had a recommended price range for this type of thing (USD)? I am thinking it could be had for $600-$700 a year per horse (Mortality minimum + Major Medical + 3rd Party Liability).
I heard you say that since you are not a US citizen you would not be covered by certain laws should you have to battle the insurance company for a claim. Is this the same for a US citizen looking for insurance with a Canadian company? Do Canadian companies insure US horses? How will this affect your insurance once you move to the US? I figured you would know based on any conversations you have already had with Cody. And thank you for this very informative segment.
I’m glad you found it informative Sam! As far as I know, Canadian companies will not insure American horses...as for when I move, I have to look into that!
The company I use charges 3.5% (for a barrel horse) of the horses value per year. So, if your horse was worth $10,000 you'd pay $350 a year for insurance. You can also add on Major Medical, up to $5000 was a flat $250 I believe, and up to $10,000 in medical was a flat fee of $350.

So how do you choose a wormer for your horse?
Ask your vet which type of dewormer they recommend for the time of year!
Thank you so much for this. It really helped how much does it normally cost do you pay so much for one horse and then another is it a lot of money
I was wondering this too
My insurance is $750/yr. I am able to split into two payments.
That’s for 1 horse, forgot to mention.
