Thanks for the reminders! I've been at it for eleven years, now, and sometimes when I'm really gettin' into it, my tone reverts to some bad habits I built early on in my studies. The chest breathing is definitely one I need to be more conscious of, which is weird because as a singer, diaphragm breathing is my default _except_ when playing harp. Woodshed time!
Can't believe I had the stupid BELL of subscription not lit, missed a few of your latest videos - a lot to catch up! Tone is the best quality of a player, before musicality and repertoire, and "working" on tone is not regular tuition or practice, its actually listening in a constant aim for improvement, and there isn't a single player in the world which cannot improve - self improvement is like eternity - you can always add 1 (or more) and get higher :) Cheers and you are, as always, best at what you do and love!
Excellent Ronnie, that was one of the best overviews of what it takes to create a quality sound. Amazingly similar to what vocalists need to pay attention when it comes to breathing technique.
The revelation came to me 30 years ago, when I was trying to figure out how Alan Wilson got his tone and vibrato. Opening the back of the throat and the chest cavity are essential for good tone and projection, perhaps more than any other factor. When I'm teaching someone to play, I have them bend over and play with their chest folded up, then lean back and look up, opening the resonance chamber from the mouth to the diaphragm. Every person I've ever taught has been stunned at the difference.
Thank you Ronnie!

Yes, I was thinking the same thing about the similarities with singing!
