Most Americans, well all of 'em don't realise who Eric & Ernie are & how famous. They actually also appeared on the Ed Sullivan Show but sadly not appreciated. Funny I can't see one Ed Sullivan Show at all. Why?

I'm not sure about the comedians. But the Beatles seem to be at the top of their game as a stage band. I just don't understand how anybody questions their musicianship.
Elton John once said to be on their show was like being invited to do a Royal Command Peformance. That's how big a deal they were.
In just a few more years the band wraps it up. They only lasted a very short time but totally changed music history. Unbeaten to this day
The Beatles lasted longer than a WHOLE DECADE, they were a band before they got famous.
The Beatles were together for a total of nearly 8 years. They did not break up for more than 6 years after this show.

This was that golden time period - The London Palladium and Royal Command Performance and all other LIVE shows taking it all the way to the US Ed Sullivan Show in February 64. After which, it becomes ALL screams. You could still hear them here, pre-Sullivan.

So funny to see Paul so typically Paul, nodding his head with such a cute expression on his face. So very very young. And still with it now in his senior years!!! What a blessing we still have him.

It’s funny how America loved them and yet how it all turned sour from one misinterpreted comment made by John Lennon. I wonder though if at the time the Beatles were aware of how many young American males were growing their hair and starting bands? Practically every music documentary I watch about bands from that era or beyond nearly all Quote how watching the Ed Sullivan show „ changed their lives“ one thing is for sure. The Beatles started a massive music revolution.

@@fretboardmaster70 the first use of the word Beatlemania was in a newspaper in October 1963. Four months before they went to the US. There’s many people who claim to be responsible for coining the word tho.
They’re babies! John should not be able to wail so soulfully at that age. It’s unreal how talented they are here. To think in 6 years it would all be over and they would have created one of the most influential catalogs of music in history.
Live performances of 'This Boy' always intrigue me, Lennons middle 8 solo part, the bit where he sings "but oh my-y-y-y" is a tough line, you either push through and reach for a quite blind note and hope the gods let it land or you anticipate by backing off and softening/changing the shape of the throat to hit the high note smoothly, John pushes through this time but his voice cracks and blows the high note, you just know it was a bit of the song they were aware of, especially Paul who was always looking for perfection, but watch them doing it on Ed Sullivan, John anticipates and softens it to hit it sweetly and Paul lights up like a christmas tree, you can tell he's watching for it and looks so proud that Johns nailed it on such an important performance
That's a brilliant observation. This Boy is a test for a real singer. I've heard him sing it 100 times. He could deliver.

Astute comment. It's one of those vocal lines which you're already thinking about from the very beginning of the song. I feel that the trick is to relax and not to tighten up but that's easier said than done some times!
As great as the music is I love how Lennon laughs with the dad joke quip. You can tell that comeback caught him off guard. Those are two top notch comedians! I’ve never seen this! What a great part of musical tv history and the Beatles performance is impeccable!
It’s a shame most of their live performances were drowned out by screaming fans. We never really got to see the Beatles truly rock out live. I’d love to see their every Hamburg shows live
Yes, after the Beatles broke up, John claimed (eg in the interview with Jann Wenner) that he had hated having to perform for middle of the road audiences like this, and that the Beatles had sold out to make it, but you can tell from his spontaneous reaction that he was loving every moment of it - and why not!

Eleven days after JFK was assassinated and 2 month before they played on Ed Sullivan’s show. A cultural tidal wave was about to slam into our world and these young lads were riding that wave all the way through the rest of the decade.
And they were UP for the task. Shape shifters.
Yeah and us 8 year olds had no clue what was underfoot. Such a strange convergence in a way. No Dallas, no Beatles? Would they have been the Bay City Rollers? No Beatles no Bay City Rollers? I haven't see an alternate history that goes in-depth on what it would have been like.
America didn't make the Beatles.
They were already big before they got there.

Paul's love for older type songs, was a big part of his song writing, though I really loved Paul's earlier works with his beautiful words he could fit together in them, I preferred John's poetic style in producing lyrics much more.
But, John and Paul's writing together was marvelous and magical.
And, that, I will always love. Forever.
That's a priceless episode of Morecambe and Wise. How fresh the Beatles are. They're literally four lads from Liverpool at that point. Their accents are much stronger.

By the end of the decade, these Liverpool lads were (as a group) no more, however what they achieved during their time and the impact they had on society, culture and popular music in general is just beyond comprehension. it’s 2022 and guess what? we are still listening to and discussing the Beatles.
I'm 63, and I've loved the Beatles since I saw them on the Ed Sullivan show when I was 4. It's just amazing how I can still find new footage, hear new audio, and Learn new information about them. I just read Mark Lewison's book " tune in " and couldn't put it down. To see and hear them like this is incredible. Talent, personality, humor; they had it all!
Such a great book. I wish he'd hurry up and finish Vol 2.

We were in love with them already
By the end of the summer in 1963 after the Royal Variety Show at the London Palladium, virtually all of the United Kingdom knew about the Beatles & loved them by parents & grandparents of their agog children. I was agog. Their ritual bow after every song cemented it. Rmbr Brian Epstein who without there would have been no Beatles & cleaned their act up & with George Martin musically they would never have progressed. The Beatles were in fact a 6 man band.
Already top of the pops in England before this.

John's rhythm guitar on All My Loving is exquisite. No wonder he's opted out of the backing vocals. Tricky 6-8 strumming technique.

I had All My Loving in my set (gtr singer) up to about 3 or 4 years ago and I would sometimes just pat my head and make circles on my belly instead of attempting the strum..
Btw, The Beatles' parents were from some faraway galaxy, just happened-by Earth around late 1930s, decided to hang around.
Indeed, John Lennon was a massively underrated guitarist. Not in the same category as the big solo players that came to prominence later but that isn't everything. He was way more than just a strummer and a good rhythm guitarist doesn't often get much recognition. He was a truly great rhythm guitarist.

Now you know why they were so confident and witty when they got to the states. Or when they filmed A Hard Day's Night. They'd already appeared on British TV several times doing comedy skits like this one. They did an hilarious 15 min faux Shakespeare comedy bit on another brit TV show with a lot of ad libbed lines. The brit shows were really different from US shows.. The brit shows were comedic and required the Beatles to participate. It turned out to be magnificent training.
I think they'd already gotten their comedy chops while trying to entertain drunken sailors and gangsters in Hamburg, during those colossal 8 hour sets they used to perform...😉

In this live performance of "I Want to Hold Your Hand," they must have blown the minds of many record company execs who watched this....... In December of 1963, the Beatles were already consummate professionals, as shown here.
Actually the record execs in the States were indifferent to The Beatles.
Capitol, a subsidiary of EMI, was practically told to sign up the Beatles but Capitol was not interested so The Beatles was leased to Vee Jay.
When Felton Jarvis of ABC Paramount heard the “PLEASE PLEASE ME” album, he called it “crap”.
The only reason “She Loves You” was even released in the States was because Swan Records got EMI to release Freddy Cannon in the UK if Swan would release The Beatles in the US, a one for one trade deal.
Snuff Garrett considered signing The Beatles on Liberty but hesitated the same time Capitol finally decided to sign up The Beatles.

The Beatles: The Gift that Keeps on Giving. How they managed all they accomplish in their relatively short span as a band blows my mind. Love seeing this truly live early performance where we can actually hear these musical geniuses singing without all the screaming. And some comedy to boot!

I can’t believe how good the comedy is from Eric an Ernie. Seems much better than their later stuff. Had me laughing out loud, and then, casually, whose on next?... only the Beatles! They were brilliant, and then so funny with their acting. I was left gobsmacked, staring at the end screen for 5 mins. This was 10 days after Kennedy was shot and 69 days before Ed Sullivan.

Such an important piece of footage here. To see the Beatles pre-Sullivan, and a respectful crowd so we can hear their genius. That performance of This Boy (my favorite of their real early songs) is just breathtaking. They truly are something else. The reason we worship them so much is not only cause they wrote the greatest music in the world, but also how equally normal and abnormal their story is. They really were just four regular working class guys*, and pure coincidence brought them together, and they not only changed music for ever, but I'd argue they changed world history. We see so much humanity in them. Their story is just too perfect, and such a celebration of music, life and achieving the most wild of your dreams. I hate to be the most typical of Beatles fans and read wayyyy too much into them, but I can't help it. Thank god for them.
*(I say four regular guys but all know they were also fucking geniuses so that helps, too)
My mom was 19 when The Beatles became popular right after this show aired. Now she has dementia and on dialysis. Makes me sad how far away this was. Time is weird like that. I grew up in the early 90s and i was a menopausal baby. So i grew up listening to Beatles and all these 50s and 60s classics because my parents were born in 30s and early 40s. Crazy. Can't believe how time goes. These videos are but reminders of the past ❤

I was born1965. This show was just before my time/I'm from Birkenhead and Liverpool. So loved their music growing up.
The musical world was about to witness a once-in-a-lifetime revolution. Glad I witnessed it.

I’m aware of Historical Black and White footage from the past. I also don’t like it because it’s not the complete picture. It doesn’t capture the scenes like color film does.

So to colorize it now makes sense! Now it’s easier to do this and gives old footage new life.
And my proof is the film 🎞 by Peter Jackson They will Never Grow Old! He remastered and colorized old WW1 footage and the result is an amazing film which brings all those long since deceased soldiers in the film back to life almost in glorious color! It’s astonishing how many details this process brought out that were not evident before! It’s like a fleshing out effect! It’s an incredible film now as a result!

You've got to realise that Morecombe and Wise were the biggest act on TV in GB at that time and for a long time to come!, the Beatles were honoured to get such exposure then, but they joined in the mayhem that characterised Morecombe and Wise and gained by it.

What a wonderful show...Really enjoyed it. Morecambe and Wise as funny as ever (now I know where Vic and Bob get it from) and great to see The Beatles in their pre Beatlemania days performing without the screamers in the audience. One thing they all had in common was they shared that dry Northern Wit, wonderful stuff.

In 2 months, the world would change forever. I was 6 years old living in Queens NY when on Feb. 7, 1964 they first landed at Kennedy Airport for the Ed Sullivan show. I'll never forget my next door neighbor looking skyward, jumping up and down, screaming....they're here, that's their plane!!! I looked up and the image ingrained in my memory forever was the Pan AM logo on the tail of their plane!
Yes, I was 7, living in Queens. We didn't have a TV yet; I missed The Beatles, been trying to catch up ever since. Next day, a lot of the girls were talking about The Beatles in school, 2nd grade, mind you! It all started then.

@@kevinohalloran7164 so much going on...the assassinations, Apollo missions, Vietnam, etc. I remember watching the evening news and seeing clips of wounded US soldiers engaged in firefights, body bags....at the end of the broadcast, a guy standing in front of a tote board tallying up the dead for the week and where....the number 250 always stood out in my mind.
@@turk5832 A news report from Vietnam on M-16s jamming, men on the moon, then Woodstock 3 weeks later. I delivered the Long Island Press covering the Apollo missions and Woodstock, among others. And the Beatles had changed so much by then. And I didn't know yet about something called country-rock or a new band called Led Zeppelin.
To think 17 years and 6 days later we would lose John 💔

The Beatles sound is best when Paul and John sing together. But the more you listen to them the more you realise how important John’s lead vocals were to their success. It’s odd that he hated the sound of his voice and always tried to change it when they were in the studios.

I was a teenager at the time, and it is now hard to believe that anyone actually liked this. Let alone that they became famous. If someone had performed this song to this standard at my local pub, I might only have been motivated to applaud out of politeness, before getting out of there to go and hear some jazz or a blues band.

Absolutely top notch set of performances. Just imagine if was recorded by modern systems. Blind Freddy could see they were going to make history worldwide.
It was a modern system then & 8 Track improved it & in fact it's never been bettered as today's zillion Tracks just drown songs. Go back to 4 & 8 tracks & songs would be better for it than today's mush. Less is more.
I loved seeing the Fab Four so relaxed and obviously really enjoying themselves. The wee bit of humour with the dad joke was lovely. Hard to watch without thinking about what lay ahead for John and George though.

This is amazing. I had heard segments of this on one of the Beatles Anthology albums but have never actually seen the show until now. Great to see the best British band and one of the best British comedy duos at the top of their game coming together. A great piece of TV history and the Beatles themselves had at one point said this was their favourite appearance on TV. So awesome to know these early recordings of the Beatles are not lost and still exist. We sre so lucky, thanks for posting.
