In reference to the iron barrels, the anonymous book "The Rifle Shots Manual," discusses iron barrels, saying that “[T]hey do not perform so uniformly well, and you cannot depend upon getting a perfect barrel made of steel so certainly as you can if you order one made of iron; and, as a matter of fact, many of the best shots have returned to iron barrels after a trial of the new steel barrels.” (P. 9.) You make an interesting point about the Udderly Smooth; I never tried it, and now I won't, because you make a good argument.
