    comparing Remedy to Naughty Dog really diminishes Remedy's value.
    very glad they let go of that philosophy and became unapologetically themselves.
    they are not European Naghty Dog, They are Remedy and they have their own amazing style

    • @BehindTheVoicePod
      @BehindTheVoicePod  Месяц назад +7

      That's not what's happening. They are not comparing with Naughty Dog, they are trying to see the entire industry and seeing how Naughty Dog incorporates a lot of storytelling in its game and that's what they did with Alan Wake 2 specficially. Made that as a starting point

    • @yellowbat79
      @yellowbat79 Месяц назад

      @@BehindTheVoicePod But the storytelling used in Naughty Dog games compared Remedy is fundamentally different, it's mainstream vs High budget arthouse, it's also not like Naughty Dog invented cinematic storytelling in video games. When Remedy was making layered Film Noire style games with fantastic and unique writing, Naughty Dog was making Crash Bandicoot (which is fantastic, but hardly the storytelling benchmark)
      The thought that they should "compete" with Uncharted 4 is the source of all the sore spots in Quantum Break, I would be very surprised if Naughty Dog is what they still had in mind when starting Alan Wake II, Kyle says it himself, the team was inspired by RE2 Remake, and he himself inspired by the work he'd done on Cyberpunk. And the storytelling became true to themselves, there simply is no game that tells its story like AW2 does, it's quintessentially Remedy and While I have respect for Naughty Dog, I don't see them ever trying to do something like that.
      The Time Breaker episode of Night Springs alone has a million times the depth of all Naughty Dog games combined, and that's not a problem for Naughty Dog, they are here to make "Game of the Year"s while Remedy's here to prove there's simply no better medium to tell stories than Video Games.

    • @BehindTheVoicePod
      @BehindTheVoicePod  Месяц назад +8

      @yellowbat79 you are not understanding the point. The point is not to make narrative like Naughty Dog but to keep Narrative as the main focus. More fleshed out characters, more detailed narrative that games before Control didn't quite have as compared. When it comes to delivering a strong narrative, Naughty Dog easily comes as a big example. A studio HAS to look at others to see what they focus on that helps a particular side of the game. Then they start to apply on their own games as a starting point and evolve from there. Gameplay again was inspired by another set of games, how a player progresses is again inspired by another set of games. These are all starting points and from there it evolves and turns into something new and fresh

      @KiIIerz Месяц назад +4

      @@yellowbat79 I cannot believe you genuinely take offense to the idea of Remedy possibly taking inspiration from a studio that not only operates in the same space as them but is also much larger and more successful. Whether you like it or not, there will always be comparisons between Remedy and studios that make similar types of games, such as Naughty Dog, Kojima Productions, Ninja Theory, etc. It doesn’t matter. I'm saying this as a huge Remedy fan who buys all their games on day one (AW2, in particular, was my GOTY 2023) and as someone who agreed with your original post.
      "The Time Breaker episode of Night Springs alone has a million times the depth of all Naughty Dog games combined" - I mean, of course the Time Breaker episode has more "depth." You're literally comparing something that incorporates elements like time travel, the multiverse, loops, and other sci-fi concepts to fairly grounded stories that focus primarily on human emotions, like love. Even so, I think it’s unfair to dismiss Naughty Dog’s work, particularly TLOU2, which takes many narrative risks and employs complex rhetorical devices, such as four complementary timelines (similar to what we see in revolutionary works like Pulp Fiction) to tell its story. Narratively, there is a lot that Remedy can take inspiration from Naughty Dog, particularly in the areas of character development, relationships, and emotional depth-all of which Naughty Dog excels at.
      "They are here to make 'Game of the Year' titles, while Remedy’s here to prove there’s simply no better medium to tell stories than video games" - Except they do both. Naughty Dog not only creates GOTYs but also pushes the idea that video games are a premier medium for storytelling. In fact, they’ve arguably done a better job at this than Remedy, considering their franchises are highly acclaimed across multiple entertainment genres. If you were to ask a non-gamer to name a story-driven video game, what do you think they would mention? A Naughty Dog game or a Remedy one?
      That being said, comparison and inspiration don’t have to be limited to story. Games are much more than their narratives, and Remedy can take inspiration from Naughty Dog’s approach to gameplay as well. For instance, if Alan Wake 2 had a combat and gameplay loop closer to that of TLOU2, it would genuinely be my favorite game of all time.

    • @yellowbat79
      @yellowbat79 Месяц назад

      @KiIIerz I shouldn't have used "compare" that's the wrong word, problem arises when one studio tries to be another one. each have their own strengths, I don't think Remedy should have ever tried to be Naughty Dog, that's likely what lead them to severely flatten out the narrative for it to fit into a "summer blockbuster" when that's clearly not the way that story wanted to be told.
      Also, yes, Naughty Dog is there to make GOTYs, you said it yourself, their whole point is to make game that non-gamers know as well, that's all cool and dandy, but I think it would be safe to assume, that's not where the new ways of storytelling are found.
      The risks you talk about in The Last of Us, are themselves very much tropes in written storytelling. The story is all there, It's not trying to introduce new and wild concept or go too deep into anything, and that's fine, that's what the mainstream is for, everyone MUST like it. you can't risk being off-putting, the most you can do is to kill your protagonist, and even that had people up in arms, so you see my point, Remedy should not try to BE anyone, especially not Naughty Dog.
      They should be inspired, they are inspired and take pride in what inspires them, paying respect to those inspirations.
      But you can clearly see when they try to be themselves at the very core, they are the best version of themselves, just like Naughty Dog or any other studio, it's their own fingerprint that they should not lose, in my opinion they were close to losing it with Quantum Break and Crossfire, but now their own style is more pronounced than ever.
      Play the Lakehouse DLC, it actually dives into this topic very well. Inspiration vs Identity

      @Cold_Zero_The_Wise and that's still happening. Remedy isn't doing what other studios are doing, they are taking inspirations on how they can do something better by again combining things that they know works best for them. Sometimes some things doesn't work, sometimes it does. Remedy themselves have done this with Alan Wake 2, taking inspirations from movies and shows. Without inspirations, you can't get ideas that are exciting and fresh and unique

    Alan was in the game for about 20% of it and he didn't fight any single boss at all. The gameplay was boring. All he did was slightly change rooms with some lamp.
    He didn't do anything interesting. The fun original gameplay with the torch was nowhere to be found. The ending was unfinished. And none of the DLCs was about him.
