Matt hated the book so much he misspelled “musketeer” in the thumbnail for satire

Couldn't agree more! I had such high expectations after an amazing first few pages. The prose and dialogue were great, for me, but the plot not so much. All the deus ex machina was RIDICULOUS

I read this book about 5 years ago. Couldn't agree more. Didn't continue the series. Also didn't remember a single detail of the story until watching this review. Your tastes continue to be on point with mine. Great review!

Your instincts on "deus ex machina" are pretty good:
it's approximately "day-oos eks mah-kee-nah" in the dialects of English I'm familiar with. I'll leave the historical pronunciation in Ancient Greek to someone else.

I haven't read that series as of yet, but I wanted to note that if that if you stuck with that distribution of Goodreads scores as your indicator/deciding factor, you never would have read Sun Eater as Traitor's Blade scores are remarkably similar to Empire of Silence.

I read this series probably 3 or 4 years ago now, so I don't remember many details. Some people really love this series. I thought it was fine. The first 2 books are better than the last 2, and parts of it get really weird. The 3rd book is just completely out of left field. So yeah, not my favorite. But it really seems like a lot of people loved it.

Read this book a while back and the only thing I remember is the out of nowhere rape scene!
Think one of the male characters is passed out and a unknown woman comes along and has sex with him while he is unconscious and its never talked about again and just ignored.
I assume its followed up on and explained in the next book but I have no intention of reading it to find out.

Actually this is really sad to hear, since the book has been on my wishlist for a while and i considered getting it for a summer read. But i just don't want to deal with a book i have to put effort into reading for half or more of the page time; i want to keep my reading as a pleasure, and not have to make myself do it

I enjoy this book and series, but yeah De Castell makes some really weird choices, thankfully less as the series progresses. I will say this, the series does improve but the improvements aren't drastic so I advise anyone who didn't like Book 1 to just DNF.
