  • Sextortion & Male Mafia: Reality of Malayalam Film Industry | Vantage with Palki Sharma
The Hema Committee report, released by the Kerala government this week, unearths some disturbing details about sexual harassment, exploitation and discrimination faced by women in the Malayalam film industry. The report details 17 forms of exploitation in total and has evoked some strong reactions. But the matter of fact is that none of this is new. It's been an open secret for decades. Why then did no one speak about it? Why aren't women safe anywhere? Palki Sharma explains.

This noice too will die down in it's due course. Despite some advancements compared to other places in India, Kerala is no exception. Nowhere in the world public opinion changes anything adequately. Rape and sexual harrasment is the scoring system - we need to remember from ages before to the plight of Kashmiri Pandits, Activist Bhavridevi, Nirbhaya Delhi, Doctor Nirbhaya 2.0 Kolkata, Haryana victims, Manipur sisters, the endless lists that has sunk down in history. Everyone blaming Malayalam film industry, I will give you another scenario. Crime rate in Kerala is higher than many other states because in Kerala when there is an offense, people make official complaints and file cases where as many other places people can’t even complain or they don’t even realize that it is crime. Many well reputed non Malayali IPS officers who worked in Kerala had said this. Same way Kerala government made an initiative to study the problems of women in Malayalam movie industry and hopefully there would be actions based on this report to make movie industry civilized and just for everyone. In reality the class difference and sexual harassment are more prevalent in other industries but something on Kerala model still has to happen there. Just imagine in the national level, female wrestlers who protested against this powerful politician, they protested in the streets for months compromising their career. Many gave up their career for this cause and returned their medals. How lame the police response to file cases with appropriate offenses enforced and to arrest the violators even though there are multiple complaints. This would never happen in Kerala.

If someone is traveling, their options are to “hold it in”, “relieve by the side of a public road, if you are a guy”, check into a hotel room to use the facilities, etc. India has ambitions to become an “advanced” country. So it's like why are you even making movies if you yourself as an actor don't take your profession seriously??? Just making a joke out of yourself and blundering something good to the ground. I think it's just a starting... I hope the protest that started in Kerala becomes a revolution that will bring a lot of changes... This revolution spread all over India and others.. We all know it's not only happening in Kerala...
In my opinion, the entertainment industry does not need any centralised power group that brings injustice to artists.. Everyone is an artist everyone needs the same opportunity and space to light up. No one has the right to decline the opportunity of others or take power and control over the industry.. It's sad to hear.. It's continued years states like Kerala, which is known as the highly literate state in India, why they endure it so long...why they suppress it for years....If they want any changes, there is a need for an exposition which is to bring down every centralised dirty power group.. Just expose them.. Why they are fearing... Bring justice to the victims.. Our sisters need to take a breath with relief .. They deserve to feel justice and comfort in their life... Unless they will not bring the criminals in front of people.. How we trust any changes will happen ... The criminals living a happy life... Even they have every evidence why they can't bring justice...
If we need changes, we need to expose them to bring justice and prove everyone has the same right No one have any special right to exploit others with their fame and power.
Expose them They always want the spotlight...
Hope for changes and also hats off to all the women who came forward and started the movement...
Also hope our talented people can get opportunities without any fear, nepotism or adjustment...
Because of this all Malayalam industry is in a question mark there are a lot of people without any guilty who treat people equally and respect women...also there are a lot of talented people who are continuing in this industry because of their talent and hardwork...exposing criminals is the only way to protect all the industry from this blame... Blame needs to transfer to the criminals... And reform the industry with new light.. All over India, There are a lot of fans of the Malayalam movie industry and their soulful stories and talents... Hope everyone won't be judged by this case/ not everyone be in the dark by this...
I hope everyone stands with the victims.
hope they become an example of this revolution...

As someone from Kerala, i would say publishing this committee report is game. The decommission of Mullapperiyar dam news have been talk of the town for the last few weeks in Kerala. The current existing govt wants to conceal this issue and deviate people's attention from controversy . This report was handed over to the govt by the committee who took the initiative of it in 2019. So, apparently it took five year to get this report published and it is crystal clear why they get published this report when a controversy has been looming around on the govt officials head.
If this issue goes like this and gets more public outrage they would bring another strategy to deviate the people's attention. At the end of the day, we all know what's gonna happen, no kind of case is going to registered against the predator. Because they have everything what common people don't have which is money and influence. If it had done by a common guy the arrest and other proccedure would be done instantly.

How unfortunate - I read an article in The India Today some 40 years ago by Shobe De, exactly on the same lines that Palki was talking about in 2024.
"Women's equality is just on papers, but not in reality"
"Treat women as equals..No need for special status.."
So the issue does not lie with the state or judiciary or police or governance. The laws and controls were in place for over 60 years.
What's not changed is the psyche of Indian men and women, their stereotyped male supremacy beliefs and their inability to see men and women as same..
Special women buses, trains, compartments, colleges, universities, policestations, homes - the separation lists goes on and on from birth to death. No social normalcy prevails between men and women which is the stepping stone for equality.
    Get that aspect fixed first.

Recently there has been huge increase in web series which has both semi n**e and full n**e scenes as well. So this adult film/web series industry, the exploitation cases are likely to be more and worse actually.
