    I've said this a hundred times since the boring company first was formed. This is basically a subway construction company. 2-3 people per viechle is pathetic for moving lots of people very quickly. It would make far more sense to have an electric railed train or bus that can hold 50-70 people per ride. Or just go full blown subway and have a train that can carry 200-300 people per ride.

    The Vegas Loop is a joke. Stick some rails in it and run an LRT and you might have something.
    The only way the Boring company can succeed is if it can bore tunnels cheaper and/or faster than other tech. If it can then there's a huge amount of storm drain infrastructure that wil have to be upgraded in the coming decades. There's your success and the companies' fortune.

    • @Tyranastrasza
      @Tyranastrasza Год назад

      If you compare what's comparable, meaning, if you take into account the cross sectional area of the tunnel, the boring company is neither faster nor cheaper. It's the same as everyone else.
      So if you need a small tunnel, sure, go Boring. Otherwise, it's useless.

    • @glennmartin6492
      @glennmartin6492 Год назад +1

      @@Tyranastrasza Exactly. Not faster/cheaper = non-competetive. If they can do a certain size that could do storm water infrastructure better then they'll make a fortune but transport tunnels need emergency pedestrian tunnels next to the main one seperated by walls and emergency doors. They need utility tunnels, ventilation, power conduits, etc. A larger diameter tunnel with a central rectangular transport section with areas below the floor, above the ceiling and at the sides would better handle all this.

    I'm imagining three tunnel systems that would connect eastern Washington to western Washington would really help bring the state together. One for i-90, hwy-2, and hwy-14. People would work on the west side but live on the east side, where it's cheaper and more spacious and circumvent much of Washington's precious forest and untamable land, not truly suitable for housing development within the Cascade mountain range. On the east side, the terrain is desert, more like southern Idaho, with vastly less trees than the west side. The boring company vision would be great for Washington. Instead of having to travel for 150 to 200 miles from the greater Seattle area in two and a half to three hours in order to reach Moses lake, The trip could be done in 20 to 30 minutes and that could also mean the third longest runway in the United States would have greater serviceability to the Pacific Northwest. All kinds of good could come from having a tunnel system of that magnitude in Washington.

  • @xc43t

    This so far sounds like the most American project. Other big cities can move a million of people a day in retro mobility systems such as metro. It´s an underground train. You can walk to the station and walk away at your destination. Not so in Vegas. You will need a car to get into a tunnel or some other not yet invented vehicle. A metro variant works for everybody, even poor people. A tunnel for Tesla owners works just for Tesla owners. I am quite certain this sort of a scheme would not be approved here in Europe. For sure it should not be funded from public money.

    I'm a huge fan of electric vehicles. I think companies like Tesla and Rivian are really paving the way for good quality electric transport.
    When it comes to the Boring company though this just doesn't make any sense. Public transit like trains, trams, and busses already exist and carry A LOT more people at once compared to a car.
    Instead of building tunnels only used for cars, the money should be put towards revamping car dependent highways/roads. Infrastructure in North America can be redesigned to accommodate good public transit instead of trying to just move cars underground.
    At the very least the boring tunnels should be used as subways. Anything less is not a good use of taxpayer money.
    A phenomenal RUclips channel called Not Just Bikes does a great job at explaining how other countries have transformed car dependent transport into public transit/walkable cities. Having a blend of Boring tunnels with functional public transit would be a dream.

    Showing a subway car is misleading, the Boring machines do not cut holes wide enough to fit a subway car, you can barely fit a Tesla car through there, and they refuse to make them bigger (check out the Boring website). There are plenty of actual viable companies out there doing this work, the company that dug the extensions to the Tube in London are one, and that company is currently working on contracts in the US. Boring company has no contracts and it is not a serious company. My thought is it has to be a money loser to dodge taxes for the overall corporation. Needs "traincars". Special Tesla four-wheel vehicle, a tubular "train" about sixty feet long, to emulate mass transit train cars in the tunnels.
    Self-driving.
    Able to transport 100 people or so, more if standing room is used.
    Traincars could move alone, or move in packs, emulating normal transit trains.
    Traincars could, in a pinch, leave the tunnels and proceed to the street and act as buses. The distinction would lose its meaning.
    Traincars could have several models, including sleeper trains and other Orient Express modes for traveling across country.
    An important innovation, to speed up loading and unloading: "porpoise" the tunnel up to ground level to transit stations that are outside, and not needing escalators, elevators, and other unguardable things homeless people use as an outhouse. Just walk up to the opening doors and stroll in, sit down.
    A REAL important innovation would be to get rid of the fares. That way, the cattle chutes and guards normally used could go.
    Tesla traincars could go under lakes, though mountains, even a bit under oceans. They could even be laid underwater, tethered with cables.
    It's a change that could end planes, eventually, but not if they are built as for-pay private highways for the wealthy.
    To avoid that, some smart people should hire Boring to make it come true. Boring will build it to your specifications. Tesla prefers cars; that's them, it doesn't have to be like that.

(I've never dared to look up the actual finished price, I moved) 4x8 -> 32 miles. The last numbers I heard from the Boring Company was $100 million per mile. I don't know if they've adjusted that, but looking at the proposal discussed in *this* video, "lower" seems the correct direction. But.32 x 100 -> $3.2 billion is still "lower", even if they didn't adjust it down from there.

      As the material costs are effectively fixed and wages are the same I don’t see how TBC can build any cheaper than a conventional contractor.
      Making a much faster TBM would only lead to a 10-15% saving if at all as the maintenance. OST on such a machine would be very high.
      Smaller tunnels are cheaper, but they don’t move as many people.
      Stations are the largest cost. If you just build a hole in the ground serviced by a pair of escalators (LVCC Loop style) or even just surface taxi ranks it keeps the cost down. But the capacity is obviously reduced.

The sea needs a quality source of water to restore it.. It's a desolate, economically decayed "low desert" area south of Palm Springs.
