Great vid....quick question...the rtv silicone you put in corners before putting new valve cover box back in, is that just a general all purpose rtv or a particular one? Thanks in advance
During removal it's for setting of the threads and for replacement it's to prevent improper squishing and expanding of the gasket when putting it together apparently
well if you're experiencing oil in the spark plug wells, removing the bolts in a certain order is not neccessary. installing them is more important since it's a new cover/gasket & would want to ensure even force on the new rubber gasket
+Prophets Among Us Thanks for watching! If you use a torque wrench you will need a wrench that can be set to inch pounds, not foot pounds. We just do this by feel, as it is a plastic cover on an aluminum head, so it can be cracked if you tighten it too much.
Great concise repair instructions. However I found it unnecessary to unclip the spark plug wires. Less chance of confusing the wiring. It was also easier to pull the valve cover off with the back hose attached and pull the hose off separately instead of fighting the lack of room to disconnect it on the car. Otherwise all worked well. I was especially impressed with replacing the entire cover rather than just the seal gasket. I replaced the gasket alone last year and then it started leaking around the sparkplug well. What's another $150 when labor is involved. Thanks so much.
With the 06 4 cylinder it’s literally tapped into order when you lay it across the cover. I don’t see how you could possibly clip the wrong connections.

I ordered a gasket oem from Nissan but the one that came with the new valve cover I ordered looks and feels stiffer and better quality. The Nissan OEM one looks good also but feels more soft and stretchy. Should I stick to the stiff one or to the soft one?
Thank so much for this video!! Extremely helpful. We used it to do the job ourselves, only issue is that the mouth of the pcv hose broke, and the clamp won't go up to it's original spot when we place it on the valve. Is the only fix to replace the hose? And if so, do you have a video of how to do that?

My first cylinder is misfiring and when I changed the spark plugs I noticed a lot of fresh oil around the first plug. Will doing this valve change help with that oil that's INSIDE where the spark plug thread is? Or do I likely have a bigger issue?
that valve cover seal/gasket is the most prevalent cause. just make sure the person replacing it puts silicone on that area as shown. possibly get an OEM cover too since some aftermarket nissan covers are a hit/miss on this & may have to do the job twice if the replacement aftermarket is also bad/poorly made
Two of my spark plug wells have oil inside of them. Could it be a gasket issue? I haven’t gotten any misfires. I was doing a routine spark plug change.
Are the spark plugs tube seals serviceable? I am a mechanic/tech but I can't remember if I've ever had to replace the entire cam cover for those seals. I'm trying to do my good deed for the year right away😎. This the fun part about working at a Volvo dealer , Nissan parts typically are wrong😐 Also are the tubes known to leak like the old Mitsubishi / Dodge engines and can I service the tubes. Like I said before my Volvo parts guys ain't up on their Nissan.
No it's kinda silly but you have to replace the entire valve cover panel thing because they put the seals in between two layers that you can't get at but you can order the panel for 80$
Is it a common issue for these to leak after 15 plus years and over 100k miles... i have a 2005... cleaned and looked for leaks everywhere under the car ,could not find source... today i will check valve cover... currently i use a quart every 700 miles and gets oil drips spots on my driveway... thanks for sharing...
I noticed on the link for the valve cover, the baffle is held on by melted down dowels, the one you have in the video doesn't have them. Which one would I get if I ordered through A1?
+dipwadz Thanks for watching! The one in the link will be correct for the vehicle shown in this video. There might be some design differences between the two, but it will not affect fit or function.
Oil leaked into the cylinders when I removed the spark plugs what should I do? I'm replacing my valve cover gasket and boots but is there anything else?
Thank you for this video I have that common problem with the oil leaking into chamber #4 of the spark plug only that one I have all of the parts to replace it but I’m still not confident enough to do it myself I’m goin to watch this video over and over until I get it down

Its the little gold looking things inside the valve cover.I tried pushed them and lightly tap them in but would go in.hope I made Sence. Any help on this would be great.
It's possible the coil boots aren't seated all the way down, it should feel like a suction sort of other than that, disassemble and glue those bolts in lol
You put it on immediately, it will set in about 20mins to an hour and be ready to drive in 24hrs with most rtv, you'll want a black/oil resistant type and there is the 90 minutes type and the regular 24 hour cure time type.
I'm guessing it's just for that specific engine but the same gunk he scraped off using the razor blade you should see it on your engine also so that's where you would need to put it...
Im about to do this to my Altima, After putting the silicone on, should I also run a bead of permatex/gasket sealent on the block surface before putting the new cover on???
i've seen others do that, but it's not necessary . the proper tightening sequence , in 2 stages, is more important to evenly distribute the rubber seal on the cylinder head. plus too much of that stuff may squeeze into the oil passages and clog the system

Does the valve cover actually come with a gasket or do i have to order it separately, because I see no image of a gasket in the valve cover on your website
update for anyone doing this: the valve cover DOES come with a gasket. It does not show it in the photos on their website, but it is already on the cover when it arrives.
I did this job on my 2005 nissan altima 2.5 .I bought the valve cover from advance auto . When I went to put the valve cover on. I couldn't understand why it was rocking on the spark plug tubes.I was afraid something was wrong and brought the cover back and asked why does it seem the holes where the tubes line up seemed way to small. But the said put a little grease on them.I still swear something was wrong because of having to screw the cover down.I was afraid it was gonna push the new gaskets out ,it was so tight fitting .any comments
yes, those tube seals aren't "serviceable" that's why most people will have to change the whole plastic cover when oil is found in the spark plug wells
did they fix / updated the problems with aftermarket plastic valve covers? i'm seeing the Dorman and similar failures of made in China ones all over youtube
I’ve changed crank/ cam sensors, maf sensor and spark plugs car cranks and starts but still have a misfire once i shut it off and let it cool off try to start it again it just spins over tries to start then go back to just spinning over I’ve also changed fuel pump I’m now trying the valve cover gasket does anyone have recommendations to try after that?
+@keontaeroberts491 We wouldn't be able to diagnose an issue like that here, you may want to have a local mechanic take a look at it. Thanks for checking us out! 1aau.to/m/Shop-1AAuto-c
check the cover/ pcv first... they're the easier cheaper route to go. but also may want to use OEM cover as this part shown as well as Dorman covers may still show signs of burning / using up oil. google or youtube other videos to confirm
+Damian Williams We currently do not have an auto repair video that covers this particular repair. We will keep this request in mind in the event that we need to make this repair in the future. 1aauto.com
in theory couldnt you remove the need for spark plug tube seals just by raising the tubes of the spark plugs higher to prevent oil from ever being able to get in? definitely would save a lot of money
is it ok not to put any silicone on the timing cover side. i've replaced the valve covers many times on these cars and never used it and never had any leaks.
I pulled up one of my engine coils and it was dripping with oil. In my situation, would you replace the spark plugs before or after the valve cover was off? Don’t want debris or oil down in the chambers. Reason I'm asking is: I have ordered the cover/gasket and ignition coils kit from 1A and figure I might as well change the plugs while I'm at it.
+alanb1974 Thanks for watching! In your case it would be best to do it all at once. That way you can install the new valve cover and gasket to help prevent oil leaks etc! 1aauto.com
Thanks. Just finished up the job today. Had a bugger of a time getting the gasket to stay in the groove while maneuvering the cover into place. Took me a few tries and I'm sure I smeared my RTV silicone beads. I tried to mop out as much of the oil around the 3 of my 4 plugs prior to swapping them out. Some oil must have gotten into the cylinders as I notice smoke coming out of the exhaust after I fired up the engine. Quickly cleared up though and all seems good. I have no idea how much the shop would have charged for this job. Thanks for the video and the Cover, Gasket & coils kit!!

Yes. This Altima is the QR25DE engine whereas the 2001-2007 Nissan X-Trail T30 engine is the QR20DE. Service manuals for both give equivalent instructions.
nope not possible - the spark plug seal is integrated into the cover. if you changed the whole cover then you changed the plug seals. if they are leaking then you might have damaged them or you have another problem.
My estimate of labor time, also on u tube was 1to 5 hrs it took you less than 15 mins what's up with the extreme time differrnce??? Thank you for the vid it's great
You don’t need to tighten those valve cover bolts with a torque wrench, all you do is tighten them until the sleeve on the bolt bottoms out on the mating surface of the head.
well, that's the torque specs from the Factory Service Manual. but the main thing is to do it in a criss cross fashion to evenly tension that gasket to the cylinder head
For a DIY-Daddy's girl, could you clarify. 1) It appears you did not remove the spark plugs? 2) Guys at work say put dab of dielectric grease on boot to prevent boot from seizing to the plug tip? Is this a good idea only if I change a coil or plug, or good idea regardless? 3) And lastly does that "decorative" engine cover serve a vital purpose in protecting anything or does it trap heat around the coils and wiring? it seems like a barrier that prevents me from keeping an eye on the engine seals.
1) guess that's a separate video, but if it's over 100,000 to 105,000 miles on the original, i'd definitely replace them with NGK platinum or iridium plugs 2) yes that's a good idea! 3) it's a "beauty cover" not to prevent rusting at all (you got a hood to keep most of the rain/snow out!)
@@1AAuto I bought my replacement valve cover from you (1A Auto ) 2 yrs ago (2006 Nissan Altima 2.5 l 4cyl. ). Last week my car sputtered and and almost stalled out. This week crank/ no start. If you're replacing the gasket itself and your valve cover is fine. You would want to follow that sequence to not mess up the plastic threading

I have a 2009 Rogue. Does this video the same and whats the part number for a valve cover? thanks
So do the tube seals come with the new valve cover?
yes, those tube seals aren't "serviceable" that's why most people will have to change the whole plastic cover when oil is found in the spark plug wells
Thanks for the video, you forgot about spark plugs.
But everything is fine ❤❤❤
did they fix / updated the problems with aftermarket plastic valve covers? i'm seeing the Dorman and similar failures of made in China ones all over youtube
Any of them made after 2015 by Dorman are fixed
Where do you get the O Rings?

I’ve changed crank/ cam sensors, maf sensor and spark plugs car cranks and starts but still have a misfire once i shut it off and let it cool off try to start it again it just spins over tries to start then go back to just spinning over I’ve also changed fuel pump I’m now trying the valve cover gasket does anyone have recommendations to try after that?
+@keontaeroberts491 We wouldn't be able to diagnose an issue like that here, you may want to have a local mechanic take a look at it. Thanks for checking us out! 1aau.to/m/Shop-1AAuto-c
Very awesome details ty 👍
Can the cover be removed without first removing the coils? My coil bolts are stripped.
maybe... but you'll need those bolts to secure the coil to the new replacement cover
How do you know this needs to be done? I have one and i think this is the issue but im not sure
+Mr. Ray We recommend having your vehicle diagnosed. Thanks for checking us out!
Having white smoke coming out, burning oil says my valve needs replace but no one will do it. I live in Woodbridge nj. Anyone can help
check the cover/ pcv first... they're the easier cheaper route to go. but also may want to use OEM cover as this part shown as well as Dorman covers may still show signs of burning / using up oil. google or youtube other videos to confirm
@@ricebike Any Dorman valve cover MADE after 2015 were redesigned with a fixed design. Gotta look at the top of the cover to see the manufacture year
I have a 05 which is why I'm confused casue on the 05 you have to remove motor mount
Recently did this to my vehicle and it still stutters the same with no check engine light also checked if it leaked again and no leak
TheChampEdgar have you tried changing spark plugs and ignition coils?
any OBDII codes? how was the visual inspection of the coils? new spark plugs?
Is the cover needed?
Can you do one on a 07 Altima v6

Does anyone know how to access the fuel rail on this car model? Do I have to remove the valve cover to do it?
MUCH easier than the replacing on G35 and all its wire harnesses
in theory couldnt you remove the need for spark plug tube seals just by raising the tubes of the spark plugs higher to prevent oil from ever being able to get in? definitely would save a lot of money
is it ok not to put any silicone on the timing cover side. i've replaced the valve covers many times on these cars and never used it and never had any leaks.
+Hector T Talks Thanks for watching! For this model you really should use silicone on the timing cover side like in the video. 1aauto.com
@@1AAuto Thank you! I will remember that going forward with future replacements.
So, there is no a need to use a torque for that?
You should. I use a torque wrench every time
I pulled up one of my engine coils and it was dripping with oil.
Go to a salvage yard
"Don’t want debris or oil down in the chambers." do the plugs first then... soak up the oil in the wells first as best you can.
What about the v6 se 3.5 altima?
there are other videos out there about it
Can i do the same on xtrail

Yes. This Altima is the QR25DE engine whereas the 2001-2007 Nissan X-Trail T30 engine is the QR20DE. Service manuals for both give equivalent instructions.
Theres no way to replace the spark plug opening gasket besides replacing the entire cover?
Great video. Exactly what rtv silicon type was it or does it even matter? I see a red paste gasket maker.
What happens when you install without the spark plug valve gasket? I think that’s what I did
Oil will leak through there.
nope not possible - the spark plug seal is integrated into the cover. if you changed the whole cover then you changed the plug seals. if they are leaking then you might have damaged them or you have another problem.
My estimate of labor time, also on u tube was 1to 5 hrs it took you less than 15 mins what's up with the extreme time differrnce??? Thank you for the vid it's great
+Cindy Merkley Thanks for checking us out. 1AAuto.com
where did you get 5 hours for a valve cover gasket, from the stealership ???
You don’t need to tighten those valve cover bolts with a torque wrench, all you do is tighten them until the sleeve on the bolt bottoms out on the mating surface of the head.
well, that's the torque specs from the Factory Service Manual. but the main thing is to do it in a criss cross fashion to evenly tension that gasket to the cylinder head
This doesn't look too hard actually, would probably try it... But I don't have a garage and working outside with an open engine seems risky
+Kaleido Scope The engine cover would be best to prevent rusting.
@@1AAuto I bought my replacement valve cover from you (1A Auto ) 2 yrs ago (2006 Nissan Altima 2.5 l 4cyl. ).
Since I had one arm in cast [out of commission], I took my cover and gasket (with its integrated O-rings ) to a mechanic and he replaced it.
Reasonable price.
Last week my car sputtered and and almost stalled out.
This week crank/ no start.
P0302
I bought new plugs and in processing of changing them, I found oil in 1 and 4 wells , and the integrated rings were cracked and literally chipping and crumbling chunks on the 1 & 4 seals!!
This cover is 2 years old!
Manufacturer or mechanic?
So the valve cover grommets are not replaceable or serviceable, that’s why you are replacing whole valve cover?
+mckoy lach That is correct, those seals are not replaceable. There could be other reasons for replacement, like the cover itself is cracked etc. 1aauto.com
