did u just say gud did good.. there was a lovely opportunity for a pun but im more annoyed that u didn’t say he did spectacularly amazing, the production is actually insaneeee
i think what is interesting about exeter (sorry for the academic analysis) is that despite the overwhelmingly loose song structures and ideas, there is always a clear drum pattern to keep the rhythm in place. it is treated as overt: each element (snare, kick, hihat) highlighted individually and given space to breathe. it’s this interplay between order and disorder that allows bladee to go beyond the formal imprisonment of the voice as instrument - his belief in the importance of the length and texture of the notes he sings emphasize the literal approach of the voice as instrument
always seen icedancer as the point in his career in which his transition into discussing faith and the likes begun. I truly believe the whole "bangkok lightning strike" thing is probably just him experiencing egodeath while on acid in bangkok, coupled with him likely getting involved in a long-term healthy romantic relationship around that era (which I also think was disintegrating by the time spiderr was released and is 100% finished by now as explored on cold visions). icedancer is consistently the first album in which throughout almost every track he's exploring an idea of love and faith. it's been explored briefly throughout the gluee era but particularly post-miami bladee's music is inherently apathetic, depressive and sorrowful. icedancer is really where this changes, but ultimately as you explained at 3:45 its in 2020 with exeter where the transition completely takes place that being said though, bladees actual exploration into these ideas really begins in exeter, and its the reason why the string of albums from exeter up to crest sound the way they do with the lyrics they do. exeter is merely the opening chapter in this discovery, and it makes sense that sonically it is so free-flowing and otherworldly, it has the least amount of self-doubt of any of his 2020-2022 work, which in general is the only period of his career that isn't dripping in self-loathing. i think this early optimism and unbridled love that is showcased to us on icedancer, is heard in his various verses in 2019 and singles such as apple is ultimately explored at its most pure on exeter, and its reflected in the sound, song structures etc. He begins to really question himself more gradually throughout 333, crest, the fool respectivelty. and sadly this joy that is explored on those albums really becomes deconstructed on spiderr and destroyed on cold visions. exeters jarring and disorienting structure is purposeful, like you were saying with the phil elverum comparison. i think this style of thematic exploration was also done on icedancer, cold visions, and the fool. bladee does not explore his stories in traditional song formats, but rather the albums are chapters in terms of his overall work-life narrative. i fully believe bladee is the only artist ive ever heard personally who has little to no disconnect between himself as an individual and the music, he's incredibly honest and the understanding we can grasp of him as a person from his music is unparalleled. your musings on the glow pt 2's structure reminded me so greatly of my understanding of icedancer and bladee as a whole. we've been conditioned to believe that the greatest albums all have cohesive narrative functions, with themes being explored linearly and song-writing quality being lauded on consistency etc. truly interesting artists are able to disregard this function, and bladee/phil elverum are great examples of this. ideas are being explored gradually throughout the entire album, or in bladees case, his entire career. bladee's career is one of the most narratively satisfying pieces of art/media i have ever experienced, if not the single most satisfying, exeter is an important chapter in this large over arching narrative. it is worrying for bladee to see his music to be returning to such a dark place, but the transitions between his work showcase the writing on the wall very clearly, this guy truly expresses himself with no restrictions great video keep up the good work and apologies for this long-winded aimless ramble about bladee :)
exeter is the album where i fell in love with drain gang and 333 solidfied bladee and all of drain gang as staple and formative musicians when it comes to shaping my taste. idk what made it click for me but i def think the immersive aspect of the production and how left field it was in comparison to the rest of bladee's discography made me reassess my take on drain gang as a whole and its great how much bladee and the rest have evolved past exeter, its almost meteoric how much drain gang has evolved after 2019 and 2020 and im glad that ive appreciated them during that time
I love how you compare it to the glow pt 2. Something i had not thought about at all. Love the way you talk about that record. Would love to see a fully fletched out video on it!
Cool video. I feel like you have the same thoughts and ideas about bladees music, especially regarding the spiritual aspect and how exeter is a really raw version of his soul/person and feelings at the time. This is cool for me to see because everyone i know that listens to bladee stays on the surface. And im not saying its bad, its just not me
already know this is gonna be a banger
Nah frr this album isn't talked about enough, gud did good and ecco killed it on the features
did u just say gud did good.. there was a lovely opportunity for a pun but im more annoyed that u didn’t say he did spectacularly amazing, the production is actually insaneeee
@gtbsgsbe nahh dw I said it for the pun the production is out of this world I completly agree with you
