Just found your channel because the neck on my fender deluxe jazz v is fekkin nackered and I wanna learn myself some repair. I'm in like Flynn! thanks for all the informative and funny videos! Subscribed (and you're a local man to boot right on)
Helpful video. I plan to replace the nut on both my Squire fretless and a Sting Ray. I'm going with adjustable bell brass nuts. The removal looks like the hardest part. I'll do this at my dad's cabinet shop. He has more tools than I do...lol
Great video. I wanted to see how much was involved in changing the nut. I want to adapt a 4 string bass guitar for B.E.A.D. strings. I will definitely take it to my favorite luthier.
Thanks for sharing and the laugh! I was like do I take my bass to have some D!ck work on it or can I find some D!ck on RUclips that's already done it! WahLah! Here comes Dave!! A most enjoyable, instructional and entertaining video if I may add. I'll be tackling this myself thanks to you...
Bahahahaha!!! I was far too entertained for what this video was. The singing about what you're doing is right up my alley!!! And the part where you "read" the disclaimer...."If you're a dick and don't know what you're doing you should probably take it to an even bigger dick..." 🤣🤣🤣
Dave, could you use an iron to steam the nut to loosen it up, if there is too much glue? I have to replace a nut on a new Sterling RAYSS4 bass. I am planning to replace it with a brass nut. Can brass be glued in place? What type of glue?
While I fully agree that if the fit is really good, theres no need for glue, my stupid obsessive brain just can't allow me to put one in without just the tiniest dot of regular Elmer's white glue on the bottom of the nut. I just can't do it.
@@Bollz-b6s No, you shouldn't, not on a nut. It needs to be very easily removable without damaging the surrounding wood. And I'm not talking about the non-toxic school glue, I'm talking about Elmer's original white glue, they aren't the same.
Dave ; is a little bit of heat a bad idea when removing a nut.The couple I've done so far have come out easy. But I know I won't always get that lucky.
3:54 wont you buy me a Mercedes Benz My friends all drive porsches I must make amends. Sorry Dave! It is just one of them things that comes out when I hear people say Oh Lord. :-)
Nice man, nice job! Or the opposite, don't know... Pretty useful too! But I'd better stop struggling... : same issue but I don't have the tools for the job. Better safe than whiny. :)
Been there, done that!!! Loved it on my 1978 P bass fretless. Harmonics came out after doing so. Intonation became more spot-on. Do your thing Darryl6636
I was at Market Mall here in Calgary on Monday and there were people EVERYWHERE! Doesn't anybody work anymore, or kids go to school? Must nearing Christmas time--already! Oh yeah, I forgot. Ottawa decided to drop a monkey wrench in Calgary's economy so all we've got to do anymore is window shop at the mall.
Interesting comment about taking your bass to a bigger dick (Luther) who "should" know what he is doing. This particular Luther cut my brass nut down to .017" clearance at the first fret. Now I have to replace the nut and find someone who ISN'T a dick!
It’s not knowing what to do when things are going well, it’s about knowing what to do when things are not going well. Thanks for the knowledge.
Thumbs up for Dave's chisel collection.
My Dad was a carpenter and loved his chisels... If he was alive he would have loved the sight of that little groove chisel...
Ride the lightning, Dave!
Dave, I just discovered your channel today, and I gotta say I love your style man. You've got a subscriber for life here
This video is straight up NUTS! Thanks, Dave.

Love the practicality of your videos Dave!
Awesome video. You gave me the confidence to replace mine. Worked out nicely.

Quite the rock n roll paint job. Lightnin' and everythang.
How much glue was used for that nut? It's not the bloody space shuttle FFS.
It's sandwich time with Dave!!
I believe we've seen this bass before! Nice work as always.
Really enjoy your videos dave
Really appreciate you giving specific dimensions with the feeler gauges.
Is this sarcasm? Lol!
Nice paint on this Pbass !
Great video. I wanted to see how much was involved in changing the nut. I want to adapt a 4 string bass guitar for B.E.A.D. strings. I will definitely take it to my favorite luthier.
Hey, how did it go? I just bought BEAD strings for this exact purpose. Did you like the adaptation?
I did BEAD strings on my stingray, and it sounds awesome!!
Dave has the best tools
Good work Dave. Nice bass
We would hope that these last dangus did not use too much glue, so that the current dangus can fix it.
Great video, i've watched others where the nut is "breathed on" and falls out, this is probably way nearer to most peoples reality
Nice job as always🍺🍺🍺
7:25 is when the video started for me 🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻
Nice vid having to do this for a left handed bass I’m flipping into regular righty
Cool finish!
It's got the legit cigarette burn on the headstock 10:20
'Tis how we held our smokes at gigs ...
it was rock,,,lol
Thé mark of excellence!
Love it! I feel a new comedy routine coming up called "You might be a dick if....."😂😂😂😂😂😂Hahahahahahaha!!!!!!
Ride the lighting!

I want to see him do a nut on an Ibanez or Jackson with the hockey stick head stock. How much glue do you use on that side ways pulling set up? LOL
Great video 👍🏼👍🏼
Thanks for the visit
Thank You Dave !!!
Great video! Getting some Micheal Keaton vibes lol
I used Elmers kid glue for a Tusq nut once......I cant believe how well it actually held.
Let’s all remember - Elmer’s glue is ONLY for eating ! (My Mom used to always include a tube in my lunchbox. Stays fresher.)

thanx 4 the info. and Nice Bass!
Tried to order your Bad Penny cd but wasn’t able to?!?!
04:00 I'm guessing someone previously has glued that nut in with a lot of super glue and it has corroded the plastic nut over time....
While I fully agree that if the fit is really good, theres no need for glue, my stupid obsessive brain just can't allow me to put one in without just the tiniest dot of regular Elmer's white glue on the bottom of the nut. I just can't do it.
U should use actual wood glue elmers theres a reason why teachers let preschoolers use it

@Wither Skeleton Agreed.
It was fun!
Have a Blaze bass that I have to do the same thing to.
Dave ; is a little bit of heat a bad idea when removing a nut.The couple I've done so far have come out easy. But I know I won't always get that lucky.
Nice slippers grandad Dave...
If I have a nut that won't come out, I use a narrow saw, and cut it in the middle, then you can implode it.
indeed, best way to do it
I have a pBass I’m restoring here in Ghana I hope it works but my bass nut is metal so that means I can’t sand it if it does not fit. Any suggestions?
3:54 wont you buy me a Mercedes Benz My friends all drive porsches I must make amends. Sorry Dave! It is just one of them things that comes out when I hear people say Oh Lord. :-)

Dave, how to I bring the nut up.on my Mexican (I won't say anything bad about Mexican built). Have way too.much space. Thanks, great channel👍
So Dave is it 20.000 across all strings at the first fret?
.022 plus or minus .002
no rules just gotta be right and no open string buzz
O K thank you
Interesting video Dave I’m thinking about installing a brass nut on my Precision Bass what’s your opinion on using brass?
Been there, done that!!! Loved it on my 1978 P bass fretless. Harmonics came out after doing so. Intonation became more spot-on. Do your thing Darryl6636
Is this a curved bottom nut & neck??
Pretty slick paint job. Any way you can ask buddy for the artist’s info and add a link in the description please? Thanks for the video Dave!
JV Squier awesome
To be or nut to be? 🎶🎸

Todd Sauve Sure! Make Xmas POLITICAL. That’s all we fucking need. TRY to cheer up Calgary! Yer not daid, like those guys in Ottawa!
Came across a Squire PB made in China at a local pawn shop, the frets all had fret creep, or the fret job was shit, my Peavey is 10x the bass.
Elephants in Canada? Who knew?
Mario Grillo Damned straight! (Mostly in Toronto) Out west, they’re called buffalos.
Dimesicion Bass
😉👍🏿
My local luthier told me to heat the nut before removing.
good luck if it's plastic
so no, my bumbass can't just do this at home haha
You don’t need wood glue then
Doing this today. Fender factory job sucked. Off center. Slots don’t line up. MQCB (Mexican quality control blows)

If it's "man-made" then it ain't ivory. Could be a gazillion times better than ivory, but it still ain't ivory.
'tis true.
@MomoTheBellyDancer Man made elephants are my favourite kind of elephants.
I think they mean the shaping of the nut it self is man-made not the material.
@@demondefiant6346 But all shaping is done by humans (normally with the help of machinery). Too obvious to state, no?
The Elephant Man.
dont be acting funny dave alright?
