I'm happy you liked it 🙂 The live show and performance is the main reason why I requested this. The album version of this song is 8 minutes long but they never played the whole thing live. And yes, this was very early Nightwish, they started in 1996 and this was recorded in 2000 if I remember correctly.
Yep , it's older, Tuomas is still clean shaven here. Emppu was 22 , Tuomas 24, Tarja 23, Jukka 22. Their first DVD release, From Wishes to Eternity. Concert was in Tampere , Finland Dec 29, 2000. This is the first bassist , Sami Vanska, who joined in 1998, between the first and 2nd album (Emppu played bass on the 1st record in studio). He was 24 here. Sami lasted another 6 months or so after this show, and Marko joined not long after that.
The full Fantasmic song is over 8 minutes, this was just part 3 they played. Last song on the 3rd album ,Wishmaster.
You make me smile while listen to you in the car - and driving to Tampere (best city in Finland). I was there and my opinion it has been the best Nightwish's concert I have been. The playing was great and done with the enthusiasm and joy of youth and the audience and the band was having more than fun. It is wort of watching She is my Sin, Sweetheart, Come Cover Me, etc. damm, have to listen the the whole set when driving back at home.

Never seen this or any of their really earlier performances, so it was a super treat. So much fun to see Tuomas so interactive with the crowd. All of it was great. I agree with you about Tarja, her vocals here. She sounds good going more rock. Thanks for the great reaction. Cheers. 🍺
The bass player is Sami Vänskä, the original bassist in Nightwish. From their third album Wishmaster in 2000.
Well official name is Sami Vänskä, but for English speaking audience Vanska or Vænskæ

Tarja's (stage) style and singing changed (in time) because of her singing studies and Tuomas' written music. It's the act of collaborating!
There are a number of performances from this DVD that are so worth the watch David. Deep Silent Complete and Walking in the Air are probbly my favourites

Early Nightwish is great. Next you should test Sacrament of Wilderness either from this show or with Floor from 2018

It’s original lineup. 2000 Tampere. My second home (NYC other). I saw them at an outdoor event. I was 12-13. The guys are shortly out of the army. The bassist is Sammi Vanska. This is the original 5. Marko replaced Sammi in 2003. Thomas wanted a male who could sing duos. And with Tarja the key is really this: Thomas called her his 5th instrument. She sang to match his arrangements. There is this interview from 2002 where T&T talk about each other in f/o each other. And she says I’m not a metal/rock girl. And he jumps in and says yes you are. Always that dichotomy.

Prefer this DVD (From Wishes to Eternity) to End of an Era. I think the sound/mix is better and Tarja seems to be more a member of the band. In EoaE she seems to be more of a solo artist with a backing band (to me).
Surprised you didn't pick up on Emppu wearing the guitar a lot higher than he currently does (more of a Phil Collen position). As a result, he doesn't rely on the monitor for support when he does his solos in this DVD, confirming your previously expressed thoughts on that matter.
.. great review man, but you must dig a little more to this song cause like already other told you this song is an 8+minute song so you got to listen it hole and then you will be amazed... that's it nothing more, and also need to know that Tarja were always like that in the shows....❤

I think Tarja has a great voice, but to be honest, I can't make out the words she is singing most of the time. I wonder if this is one reason why Floor has chosen to do most of her singing in a classical tone rather than an operatic tone? With classical singing I think there is much better articulation
This performance caused nostalgia. That's how I remember Nightwish when I met this wonderful band in the middle of 2000. Tarja had her own way, Marko had his. And now their paths have crossed, now they are performing together.

It's kinda a giveaway that marco plays bass with a pick and this guy doesn't.
Not wrong people, different people. They all just grew up and in doing so in slightly different directions. It was pretty clear in retrospect that Tuomas was getting a bit frustrated with the vocal limitations put on him after the Marco Tarja pairing was explored as you can hear in the coral backgrounds. It is also clear that Tarja had settled into the role she was most comfortable in and I'm sorry was not one of the boys and felt like that also.
I don't think her change from rocker to classy was really the issue. The problem was she wanted a solo career and was dangling that carrot that she would be leaving soon. The boys did not like that uncertainty and just made it happen quicker so they could control the situation better. In the end Tarja got what she wanted, a solo career. How she came to the conclusion that she wanted a solo career is where it's rumoured she was a victim of listening to others. If she is happy that she is on her own, then she wasn't a victim. Only she can answer that. All I hear is upset fans saying she should still be on Nightwish. I don't get it. Why? If she wanted a solo career and is happy where she's at why are Tarja fans disrespecting her decisions.
Toumas loves her vocals. I love how people just make things up out of thin air. He wrote multiple songs about her being his muse.

@@nicholew350 Yes he does, I'm not saying different, with that voice and talent how could he not. All I'm really saying is that two people found slightly different directions in their musical life growing apart. Neither is right or wrong just different and that is really what led to the breakup,.
This seems to be that period when Tuomas wanted to see how fast he could make Tarja sing. Wanderlust and Wishmaster from this same concert are super fast as well. I love the sheer energy of this concert. You haven’t seen a lot of Tarja videos, and so your impression might be off a bit. Not a criticism, just a guess. I don’t know what people have told you but you’ll get like 4 different versions and so I’m not sure what’s true tbh. Thanks for the reaction!
Idk if she listened to the wrong people. She’s still around the same people and as soon as she left NW she went back to her metal style performances. A lot of her music is way harder than NW music. It’s well known that they were all getting screwed by management at the time and Tarja just got sick of it. She wanted a solo career so she could do her own thing. I don’t think there’s anything wrong with that. It was extremely difficult for her to do anything solo at the time. She’s said in many interviews, during and after, NW that she turned down a lot of projects for the band. They were making way more albums and touring a lot more back then. Plus, she had her schooling. People grow apart and have different priorities and there’s nothing wrong with that. She writes and composes her music now and she would have never been able to do that for NW.

Floor ruined me, Tarja's voice is annoying and one-dimensional
I dont know, but the jump from Tuomas to me feel forced. Like if it is expected to rock so lets do it but I would rather not. I am probably absolutely wrong but it is how it feels to me. I wonder how old was Tuomas when he wrote this song.
I think Tarjas voice and singing does not entirely fit to the music here. It sounds kind of separated (especially if the sings higher and in the first part). In difference to Floor (who has thousand ways to adapt actively to a song - makes it her own) Tarja is much more static and is rather depending on the music. If everything flows together (like for instance in the 'Phantom of the Opera' version) it can be really great - her voice adds then to the general mood. This is here not really the case. Tarja has kind of a similar problem as Anette - if the voice doesnt fit then it sounds a bit sub optimal. Tarjas advantage over Anette is in reality not better singing but just having an iconic operatic voice - which has a better reputation than a pop voice. But if one puts that aside what is left? I think even Anette has a bit more dynamic and is the better singer (just has - as said - the drawback that she lacks of a classical/operatic voice - which is kind of required for Nightwish/such kind of symphonic metal.
I disagree, I think Tarja has by far the most interesting and exciting voice for Nightwish, and it was also the voice that inspired so many of Tuomas' greatest compositions such as Ghost Love Score.
