White vinegar is a natural fabric softener, so I use it in the washing machine instead of store bought softener. Keeps the machine clean and it doesn't make your clothes smell like vinegar. Cheaper too!

Although vinegar is widely touted as the "be all, end all natural cleaner, in reality, vinegar, being an acid, is actually corrosive and should not be used for many applications for which it is touted, such as cleaning granite counters, cleaning tile floors and grout, and other uses it is recommended for.
      Washing Machines
Vinegar is sometimes used as a fabric softener or for getting rid of stains and odors in laundry. But as with dishwashers, it can damage the rubber seals and hoses in some washing machines to the point of causing leaks. It’s a problem that Steven Grayson, owner of Foothills Appliance Service in Wilkesboro, N.C., sees fairly frequently. “With continual use, vinegar can literally melt hoses, causing leaks and thereby possibly all kinds of additional damage to the house,” says Grayson. In his experience, front-load washers are especially susceptible to vinegar-related damage.
Plus, it may not even be doing much. “Vinegar isn’t very useful with stains that have already set into clothing, including food stains and bloodstains,” says Sansoni. Consumer Reports' recent tests of laundry stain removers reveal products that are great at removing tough stains, and you don't have to worry about any of them melting the rubber in your washer.

Where the tube from the toilet goes into the black tank. It's basically just a fancy "doughnut" that holds it in place. No mechanical fasteners or anything. If it ever comes free, you don't need to drop the tank. Just pull the toilet off and you can get to everything from the topside.

Once every 2 months or so I put a couple cups of bleach with a tiny bit of soap with no clothes in the washer and run it at the hottest temp I can then I take a microfiber cloth and wipe inside the rubber ring seal. Every day use I always leave the door opened after use and wipe the glass and rubber seal. I also leave a towel hanging on the door so it can't close.

I had this same issue with my front loader in my sticks and bricks, so after much "self research", I started wiping under the rubber with Odoban once a week and that made a huge difference. I did this on top of running a load of just bleach and soap in hot water with nothing else in the washer.

I'll tell you a way that you can prevent cleaning that P-trap out in your sink and it also works great for your sink in the kitchen taking boil up a gallon of water and two cups of vinegar and pour it down the drain once a month and you'll never have to take your P-trap apart again also do the same thing for your shower drain and before you go on the road put one cup of Dawn dishwashing soap in your black tank and you are gray tank and as you're driving down the road that will clean the greasy stuff off the inside of both of your tanks have fun💝💝😍😍😁😁😁😁😁

    • @wilddaisy3902

We do similar at home. One cup of baking soda and I scrub out the sinks/toilet/shower basin. Then I pour 2 cups of vinegar in, let the bubbling sit for a bit. About a 1/2 hour later, I go and rinse it all out with hot water.

    • @LIBERTY0RDEATH

Would like to see someone actually test the theory. We have all heard about putting the vinegars etc down the sink but have you taken apart the p trap 6 months to a year later to see if it actually works? I also don’t buy for a second that putting a little bit of dawn in the gray and black tank will clean the grease off. It won’t hurt but it isn’t going to do as much as people think. Put dawn on a greasy pot then pour some water in it and dump it that’s about what your tank will look like.

We're full time and I've never seen that kind of stuff on the "poop chute" on any of our three Grand Design RV's. It almost looks like some kind of bacterial growth. Ours stays white and requires no cleaning. Weird! As for the washing machine - we leave our washer door 1/2 open all the time. Zero mold. But then we removed the door to the washer dryer closet so that makes it easy to leave the washer door open. Another great video! You do a fantastic job covering many aspects of RV'ing that others don't.

    • @acampbell198
      @acampbell198 3 года назад +2

Us too on the poop shoot. We've never gotten build up like that. Not to get too far in the weeds...or down the chute might be more appropriate...but we usually preflight the potty by pushing the foot lever part way down (run the water w/out moving the valve) and fill the bowl w/ a few cups of water first. We also run the water for 10 seconds or more during the flush. Not exactly the greatest from an environmental perspective but I really hate cleaning toilets.

DON'T RUN YOUR EXHAUST FAN WHILE WORKING WITH THE TOILET!!! It pulls air into the bathroom and pulls fumes from the black tank. Same as whenever you flush, exhaust fan will draw air out of the black tank.
As for the washer, we use a clorox wipe every second or third use. And we ALWAYS leave both the soap and washer door open. Minimal issues in the last 6 years. Also part of the issue with the softner is my understanding is it has sugar as an ingredient.

I had the same issue with my home front loading washing machine. I looked up on RUclips on how to clean the rubber gasket. I removed the gasket and soaked it in water/bleach mixture for a couple of hours and it looked brand new. I wouldn't replace the seal unless it's damaged. I put my cleaned seal back on the my machine and it's been working like new since. I'm not sure how much a seal costs for your unit but mine was around $50'ish. You already have to do the labor either way. The hardest part was putting the inner spring back on when I did mine. I'm sure you could find someone on RUclips that's cleaned your gasket.

Hey Tara, we have a front load washer that I thoroughly clean every 30 loads. There are cleaning tablets you can put in the washer and run it through a wash cycle. Also, make sure you take a towel and wipe down the washing machine door and the seal after every load. The mold you see in the seal is from closing the door and not letting it air out. You need to replace that seal because you don't want to breathe in the mold spores. Wipe the seal dry and leave the door cracked open between every load. You guys are awesome. I have learned so much from you two. Keep it up!

For the washer I’d suggest Arm & Hammer moisture absorber. They make them in buckets with resealable lids. I’ve found they work well keeping damp areas from having enough moisture to grow mold etc. Thanks for the how to videos. Chad should patent his RV toilet brush design. Great thinking!

I like the little medal drain cups. It catches everything and I don’t have to go digging for anything. ( I did first month after each shower ) I’ve got one for each drain. There inexpensive and work really good.

I rejoiced when my sideloading washer bit the dust because of the mildew thing but I understand that you are stuck with that type due to space limitations. I tried all those things wiping it and leaving it open it helped. I wiped down with vinegar and that helped with any odors throwing a bit of vinegar in lieu of fabric softener seemed to help. Liquid fabric softener makes it worse.

For the Shower drain use a small crochet hook...size "G" is good...

Just got my first front loader - heard all the negative so every week I bought a brush and run it around the rubber - I also wipe down inside every time I wash - we haven't come across any mod yet. Great job (no pun intended) on showing the upkeep of the trailer

Good info! Ive clogged my shower once, just got hair under the top grate.
My toilet doesn’t have that taper like yours, mine is an ABS pipe the same bore all the way down, I have never had that kind of build up, even on the baffle at the bottom of the pipe. Mine is a 2018 Grand Design Solitude.
A periodic large pot of hot water is great to help keep the funk out of the P-traps.

I brought a set of small scraper tools like dental picks that make pulling hair from drains a breeze. We also use the shroom, love them. Also, we found that Murphy’s Oil Soap is excellent cleaning the cabinets and leaves them with a nice clean finish without drying out the wood.

Hi Guys. I really like your shows. My wife and I had the same problem with mold in our washer . What I did worked really well. I Soaked some small towels in bleach water and stuffed them in the folds of the rubber flaps and left them over night. Next day it was much cleaner. Some might not like this idea but if you are careful with it it really works. Safe travels.

Great tips! It's refreshing to see videos from RV RUclipsrs that aren't repeat videos from a bunch of other RV RUclipsrs with just a slightly different twist. I for one appreciate that a lot. If people are squeamish about these things, they should question whether the RV lifestyle is for them. It's all part of the deal. I replaced a toilet in our previous RV. The tube going into the tank is attached to a standard plastic toilet flange like you would have in newer homes. It's connected with PVC cement. The toilet is attached to the flange. You likely won't break it off but I also take care when cleaning the tube. Thanks again for a well thought out video topic!

Thanks for the video! Our motorhome has a Thetford Aqua-Magic V toilet. To clean the pipe between the toilet boil and black tank, I fill the black tank with water until it is almost to the slide seal, then I add a good squirt of dawn dish soap and some almost boiling water and let it sit for an hour or two then use a long handle brush. We never have any issues with odours. We use Happy Camper for our black tank which is great.

I used to pour a little olive oil from the kitchen into the toilet bowl for the seal. Worked great! For stainless try 'lemon oil'. Old boater's trick.

We use a concave screen for the shower drain and clean it with TP after each use, they have multiple sizes W-mart for kitchen/bath sinks & showers. For the toilet we use a spray wand that attaches to a hose but we also clean the toilet routinely with vinegar spray. For the frontload washer we put a few cups of vinegar and run it on the long hot cycle to clean and sanitize every 3 months, also just wipe the seal after each use. It will reduce the smells. We keep spray bottle of vinegar & water mix handy all the time.

Had a front loader clothes washer for years, never any mildew. You have to wipe the inside of that seal, and the window inside, and leave it open until dry. You'll never have to clean it again. Obviously it'll dry quicker in less humid climates, or when you're running your A/C. Always great videos, thanks guys!

Try Howard’s feed and wax wood polisher and conditioner on your cabinets. It doesn’t stain but brings the wood back to life. We discovered it when we started restoration on our old house amok woodwork. Absolutely love this stuff

We have the same washer and dryer combo and have the same mold issue in the same exact areas. We keep a damp rid bucket in the washer when not using it. It doesn't prevent the mold, but does seem to give us a little more time in between mold clean ups.

For the washer we have a 2 in 1 and we wipe it after every use and once a month we do the washer machine cleaning powder from tide and then we clean the lint trap and it has never turned slimy or moldy. We have had ours for 8 months and and we do about 6 to 8 loads a week.

Had same problem with my front load washer at home and it was new. Slime was getting under basket where you can't clean also. Switched to powder soap and run a hot water cycle once a month and leave doors open between loads. No more problems anywhere.
