It's fascinating how this demonstrates diminishing returns in regards to the number of faces. The difference between 16 and 64 faces is massive, but there isn't much different between 1024 and 4096 is imperceptible at times.
Honestly to us, as completely uninformed as we are (this just came up in our feed and was cool, we have no dev or 3d animation skills whatsoever) it looks worse half the time over 1024 faces. Sometimes the 2048 is better from a smoothness factor (it bends better around sharp edges or with tension,) but most of the time, it just looks like if you took the errors from 1-8 faces and multiplied it into a fine sand. Our best guess is that this is quite literally what's happening: there's so many faces bumping into each other, it's like the tiny faces are all having the same errors as the base 1-8 face objects had, just within the same object instead of two different ones. Game-wise, fabrics are good at 1024-2048 (the demo at 1:03 shows that stretchy effect we were talking about, with 1024 being kinda tight but 4096 being a bit loose) but things like doors, gates or chutes (think your typical horror titles like Resident Evil or Outlast) are probably good at around 16 faces. You can have a door made of plates, we don't need an 8K door object: plate doors are literally garage doors or those plastic ribbons in factories. Higher and higher amounts of faces on things like that will just cause collision with the entire surrounding environment and make it look shit. Less is more, sometimes. That's honestly probably why games like Lethal Company or Buckshot Roulette are doing better right now than, say, Horizon or Cyberpunk, because the graphics are not as important as the gameplay, and the latter focused on graphics first. -👾/⚖️/🧰
I love how at lower face values that objects just don't want to be there. You put a 1-16 face object on another object and it's leaving. It doesn't have time for this
I just watched 12 minutes and 8 seconds of Rigid Body Animation and Cloth Simulation in one sitting and my life has never felt more fulfilled.
I love how this is the only comment on this video that has more than two replies

Yeah I think 1024 is the highest you'd have to go for 99% of situations

It feels like between 64 to 1024 faces is the "Golden Ratio" for cloth.

3:32 The ball consumed us
Interesting how there is a point of diminishing return in pretty much all cases. For the flat cloth, it can be as low as 256 faces to 2048 faces.
I find the most interesting things when I should be sleeping lol
